**SLOW BURN is a re-release. It was originally published in 2014 as ONCE BITTEN, TWICE BURNED.**
The king of the vampires is in hell…and he will do anything to get his freedom.
Ryder Duncan has been a prisoner at the Genesis facility for far too long. Trapped, starved, tortured—he is ready to do anything necessary in order to escape. If Genesis wants a monster, he will show his captors just how deadly he can be…
Then an angel is tossed into his cage. A beautiful angel who burns hell-hot and wrecks his world.
With one taste of Sabine Acadia’s blood, Ryder is hooked. Her taste is like no other and the flood of power he gets from her is a supernatural rush. He knows what she is—even before he is forced to watch the flames consume her. Beautiful, magical, more than a myth…Sabine is a phoenix, and when she rises, he vows that she will be his.
Thrown together in an alliance born of blood and passion, they have to trust each other.
Escape is their goal. Freedom their dream. Ryder vows to make their captors pay—in blood—even as he plans to keep Sabine at his side. He’s roamed this earth for centuries, and he’s always searched for his perfect mate. He just never expected his desire for her to burn so hot.
But that’s the thing about fire…even a slow burn will eventually consume you.
Author’s Note : The phoenix shifters are back and hotter than ever. SLOW BURN was originally released by Kensington Publishing back in 2014 (the original title was ONCE BITTEN, TWICE BURNED), and I am so thrilled to have the chance to bring this story back to readers. If you love fierce, possessive, and ever-so-dangerous heroes, then you do not want to miss the king of all vampires. Because Ryder will truly walk through fire in order to claim the woman who is destined to be his…

A rerelease with a new cover Four and a half Another blisteringly hot story from this author that features a Phoenix. Kidnapped and trapped by Genesis all Sabine wants to do is go home but instead she’s thrust into the cell of a starving Vampire ! Ryder doesn’t want to kill the human that his tormentors have delivered but he cannot after so long without blood control his hunger and what do you know her blood is the sweetest, most addictive he’s tasted. As Sabine dies in his arms Ryder struggles against the guards to use his own blood to save her but Sabine doesn’t need his help because she burns oh so bright and hot to rise from the ashes as a Phoenix straight out of myths. This series is such fun to read chock full of bad guys and surprises , not to forget steamy romance. I particularly enjoy the way each book connects giving the reader a different point of view as well as a new and interesting story. Ryder is certainly perhaps the strongest Vampire I’ve read about recently but at times I found Sabine perhaps just a little too naive. That having been said they are a passionate couple who after so much do deserve happiness. The Phoenix whose book is up next is the brutal , enigmatic Dante although I cannot help but wish that a certain Werewolf from the first book had been given his happy ending . This voluntary take is of a copy I requested and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
SLOW BURN is the second instlament in Cynthia Eden’s contemporary, adult PHOENIX FURY erotic, paranormal romance series. This is vampire Ryder Duncan, and phoenix Sabine Acadia’s story line. SLOW BURN can be read as a stand alone but for back story and cohesion, I recommend reading the series in order.
NOTE: SLOW BURN is the re-release of the author’s 2014 ONE BITTEN, TWICE BURNED. Some of the event of SLOW BURN cross over with, and run parallel to book one HOT ENOUGH TO BURN.
SOME BACKGROUND: Approximately ten years earlier the existence of the paranormal, the supernatural was revealed to the world. A group calling themselves Genesis is capturing, torturing and performing unsanctioned experiments on the supernatural in an effort to create the perfect soldier. These are their stories.
Told from third person perspective SLOW BURN follows ancient vampire Ryder Duncan and phoenix Sabine Acadia’s escape from the group known as Genesis. Ryder Duncan is an ancient vampire, believed to be the first vampire, and as such his powers are beyond that of which anyone knows but Ryder’s blood has been used by Genesis in an effort to create the perfect soldier but the power within the blood is more than anyone can handle. Enter phoenix Sabine Acadia, a young woman who knows nothing about her powers or the existence of the supernatural but a woman who is about to find herself front and centre in the unsanctioned experiments at the Genesis complex, experiments that match Sabine and Ryder together in an effort to merge their powers. Upon their escape, Sabine is desperate to return home to her family but her returns brings chaos and death to the people she loves. What ensues is the building relationship between Sabine and Ryder, and the potential fall-out as betrayal and vengeance target our story line couple.
Sabine Acadia is an innocent, naïve to the world of the supernatural but Sabine’s past is mired in secrets and lies, and our heroine is about to discover how truly deep goes the betrayal. Ryder Duncan is the king of all vampires, and as such, he is impervious to most of the ‘usual’ things used to kill a vampire including fire and our story line heroine but one taste of Sabine’s blood, and Ryder is unable to stay away, blood that calls to our hero’s heart.
The relationship between Sabine and Ryder begins as an experiment that goes horribly wrong for our story line couple. Ryder is starved of blood for months at a time, and Sabine is ripe for our hero’s lust. Sabine believes that Ryder only wants her for her blood but her memories reveal a bite that is both deadly and arousing. The $ex scenes are intimate and erotic without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Cain Connor and Eve Bradley (Hot Enough to Burn #1), scientists Richard Wyatt and Cassandra Armstrong, phoenix Dante, vampires Julia and Grayson; Sabine’s father and her brother Rhett; Rhett’s cousin Vaughn and his father Keith Adams; and Ryder’s brother Malcolm.
SLOW BURN is another story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, desperation and manipulation, torture and abuse, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is dramatic and passionate; the romance is seductive and fated; the characters are energetic and strong.
This book was an absolute clusterf*** to me...so prepare for a "review" in the same vein.
First off - if you read the previous book in the series - you'd notice the timing is off and the story did not flow like it should have. That said, here is my sorry a** review of this sorry a** book:
Ryder - the H is supposed to be some really bad ass vampire that is in LOVE with a supposed "phoenix" who he has not seen for a bit (again, circle back to the sentence above - it was off) and just might be suffering from withdrawals akin to that a crackhead who's gone without for a few days -
Sabine - the h (lawd she was so forgettable, unlikeable, annoying as shi** and whatever else you can think of to describe a fluffly slipper wearing, daytime martini drinking, botox overload idiot in the making) with a serious damsel in distress syndrome. Think that dumb a** b**** that always needed Superman to save her...just dumb. Save me from my best friend who is a crazed werewolf...but don't kill him! Ok - get us out of here, but don't kill anyone following us trying to blow our heads off or tear out our hearts! Gosh, I am exhausted thinking about this crap.
The whole thing with them both being caught and used for para experiments, the crazy dude Wyatt who was really Frankenstein's Monster, not to mention the werewolf who got away, the "OTHER" phoenix who is supposed to be the most powerful, the sorry a** relatives and friends who keep selling them out...whew, I just cannot.
One unfortunate event after another
I get it, sorry review...but real talk - sorry book that made me want to throw my kindle and say: cause the next one is going to be a "no" for me.
***my disclaimer until I can go out without a mask, not have to argue with idiots that lump science and politics all in one and can go to church without getting my head blown off and exploding all over the neighbor next to me from the bullet of an AR-15 someone's child is wielding, nor catching the bubonic plague. Dammit - until Fauci says the pandemic is over! Bottom line - I have no energy to provide a proper review. Chalk it up to pandemic fatigue, COVID Fog, smelling my own breath in these daggone masks for two years - whatever you want to call it. This book just added to my exhaustion. This one was ALL BAD. And the writing mostly made me want to reach out to an editor and unload 4 letter words I promised myself I would stop using...but most importantly, I just thought about what my gen z daughter says to me, "I cannot be held accountable for much of the content I consume during the Covid-19 global pandemic."
Ryder Duncan, King of the Vampires, has been confined to a cell and is slowly dying…he needs to feed. When Sabine Acadia is thrust into his cell, his thoughts go from feeding to who is this beautiful woman and why her, why now? When he learns that she is a legendary Phoenix, her fire burns him, but does not kill him. Now he must try to rescue both of them from the Genesis experimental facility before they are killed. Through various attempts to escape and evade their captors they meet another Phoenix named Cain (who we met in the first book of the series, Hot Enough to burn). As Sabine tries to save her brother from being used against her, she realizes that someone in her family was responsible for her being captured and studied by Genesis. Is Sabine the mate that Ryder has always been searching for? An exciting and often dangerous visit to the paranormal world. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
This book is a re-release of the 2014 Once Bitten, Twice Burned. Genesis is renowned for its experiments.
Ryder is a vampire stuck in the lab where expiriments on the paranormal species. The tests that are carried out are outrageous. Still Ryder bides his time. Then Sabine is sent to his cell and from then on it's non stop. He becomes obsessed with her and there are a lot of obstacles to overcome and Wyatt, the scientist is relentless. He will change the world.
Sabine is not aware of her nature and Wyatt is only too willing to see how far he can go with his experiments. There are some graphic details on what's developing between Ryder and Sabine.
The twist at the end is unexpected when more of Sabine's nature becomes apparent. A long lost relative of Ryder resurfaces. This is another twist.
It's a good follow on to the first book. It ends on a wonderful note. Sabine accepts her nature with the help of Ryder. Their relationship is steamy and it all ends well.
This book follows along from "Hot Enough to Burn" and gives us some answers that we didn't get in the first book The connection between Vampire Ryder Duncan and Sabine Acadia the woman thrown into his prison to feed him is instant and hot Sabine o idea what she is but one taste and Ryder knows not only what she is but that she is also his mate Now he is determined to escape the Genesis group and take her with him Will they escape will they survive and can they have a future together You will have to read to see. This is a rewrite of the earlier book "Once Bitten Twice Burned" which had some lackluster reviews so I am assuming that it was a fairly major rewrite but it certainly isn't lacking now
I volunteered to read and review an advanced readers copy through Net Galley of Slow Burn . This was previously published but has been changed a bit and republished . I really enjoyed reading this paranormal Suspense Romance . It's so action packed and Suspenseful . The story follows Ryder an ancient vampire and Sabine a Phoenix . Ryder and Sabine are held in prisoned in Genesis a military facility that experiments on supernaturals against their will . It's definitely torture . The story unfolds and their journey is not an easy one . Danger is everywhere . This story is smoking hot and full of suspense and betrayal quit a rollercoaster ride . I highly recommend taking the time to read .
Slow Burn by Cynthia Eden is book Two in the Phoenix Fury Series. This is the story of Ryder Duncan and Sabine Acadia. Ryder is the King of the Vampires but has been taken and held at the Genesis experimental facility where he is dying due to lack of blood/food. But then Sabine is thrown into his cell and his mind goes to working to save them. Acadia is a Phoenix who has been taken to the facilities. Acadia starts to think someone she knows is the one that is setting her up. This was an exciting read.
This was super sexy and exciting! Now if you read book 1 like I did it starts from the beginning but with different characters. This can be a bit confusing at times but only cause I had the other book in mind. These books do not need to be read together, easy stand alone. There were a couple little twists and intrigue moments that made this book a quick page turner for me. I definitely did not want to put this book down. Definitely looking forward to book three.
I couldn't read this story fast enough! It has action, drama, humor, heart, twists and heat. The characters pull you in the the plot keeps you engaged.
I had this in my library for awhile. I just finished another paranormal romance by Cynthia Eden who I love to read so I started it. I read the first and third book in this series a while back and enjoyed them. So I knew this would be an awesome read too. It’s a fast easy page turner read that I could not put down till finished. Definitely worth the read.
I was so happy to do a reread of Slow Burn, the updated version and rerelease of Once Bitten, Twice Burned! It still is a thrill ride of suspense, danger, sizzling romance and an epic story that I once again loved with my whole heart!
Cynthia Eden's Phoenix Fury series is one of my absolute favorite series! I have reread this whole series at least 3 times and I think, with this one being updated is even better than I remember. Ryder and Sabine are so sexy and perfect and wonderful. Their romance story is what I dream about in a PNR. Ryder is a strong alpha vampire and Sabine is a rare creature she didn't know she was...a beautiful phoenix. They are a great match and so sweet together. The trials and escape and danger they are in make this story enchanting and edge of your seat amazing. I can't say enough about how much I loved this book!
Slow Burn (Phoenix Fury #2) by Cynthia Eden This is the second book in the series and it's Ryder Duncan and Sabine Acadia’s story. The are both held by Genesis he is a Vampire and she is a Phoenix. There is terror, violence, an evil doctor and experiments, angst, tears, pain, strength, family, deception, strong attraction, steam and love all to get us to their HEA. I can't wait to read the third book BURN IT DOWN Dante and Cassie's story. Reasons I enjoyed this book: Tear-jerker Page-turner Steamy Wonderful characters Entertaining Tragic Action-packed Happily Ever After Scary Twisted Unpredictable Easy-to-read
Sabine has been kidnapped and taken to a facility to be experimented on. They put her in a room with a vampire. The vampire is Ryder, the very first vampire. They have starved him so when they put Sabine, he drains her dry. But Sabine is not just a human, she is a Phoenix. So when she dies she doesn’t remember when she arises from the ashes. After being on this Earth for centuries, he finally finds the one for him.
I loved this story!!! Sex, lies, and back stabbers. Be prepared for some smoking hot scenes.
