Horse Conformation: Structure, Soundness, And Performance

Rate this book
In athletics as in architecture, form follows function, and nowhere is that truth more important than in equestrian sports. The better a horse's conformation (how the animal measures up to, or "conforms," to the ideal standards of its breed or type), the better it will be able to perform. Using hundreds of photographs and drawings, this masterfully produced book will show you how to develop the "eye" that any horseman needs to assess equine conformation and anatomy. Its comprehensive text focuses on ideal and abnormal conformation features; balance and symmetry; the relationship between conformation faults and athletic ability; colors and markings; as well as anatomical elements, teeth, and aging; body systems; and the relationship between structure and function.

Now in paperback, HORSE CONFORMATION is the single most valuable book on its subject and one that deserves a prominent place in every horse owner's or rider's library.

An excellent overview or introduction of the topic. Covers multiple aspects of Conformation including how horses in general are put together, how the body systems work and what differences to look for and are normal in different breeds/types of horses.

This is one of my favorite topics for horses, so I don't feel like I got anything "new" out of this book, but I did like how it was presented and how clearly it explained various aspects. I would put this in a detailed horse class. Meaning, a class taking a broad look at all things horse and spending a couple weeks or month just on anatomy and conformation (this would be the perfect book!). For a class specifically and only on horse conformation, I don't think it goes into quite enough detail. For a class doing multiple animals (like an intro vet class) I think it would be too much detail, unless the class was solely focusing on comparative anatomy between species, then it might be just right.

No real content issues, this is like the mildest of nature programs, the reproductive system is explained, but not "seen" in action.

This is a very thorough and in-depth book. It includes a lot of info about not only proper conformation, but a lot on undesirable conformation. There are descriptions of bone structure, muscling, and even chapters on breeds, types, and color and markings. The pictures are helpful and informative. I found this book to be very helpful in its descriptions.
