This is a book that's hard to categorize because it is based on actual events, but the author never says which events actually occurred.

At the end of the book, I found myself blinking at the unexpected turn of events. It was almost like the author just said "ok, I'm done" and went off to enjoy a drink.

As someone who reads a lot of medical nonfiction, the fact that some of the events in this book happened is disconcerting. The physicians in this book are, for the most part, egotistical jerks. I know that happens in the real world too, but the percentage of the doctors in this book fitting that description must be about 90%. Only a couple don't berate medical students in a way to make themselves feel superior rather than teaching them what was done or said incorrectly. None of them should be in charge of med students or interns. Even one I thought was finally a "good guy" turned.

That these so-called professionals couldn't make a diagnosis based on symptoms that even I, a lay person, could have figured out, concerns me.

All of that being said, the book is an easy read (I read it in one afternoon and the following morning with no problem) and some of the cases really are interesting. The ending left something to be desired - it was more like something I'd expect to happen at the end of a Bugs Bunny cartoon than in real life (sorry to the author). The timing of the event was a bit hard to swallow.

My only hope is that my life is never in the hands of the doctors in this book. It appears the odds of surviving aren't very good.

Wow! If this is anywhere close to what the med students, interns and residents endure during their training, it is a wonder that any of them continue in their profession. Hard to believe the insensitivity, indifference, ignorance, boorish behavior and egotism that exists. I think this was a really interesting book that will be in the back of my mind every time I need medical attention. The shock of the ending was a bit much but it did reinforce the message that one should never be a patient in the hospital in July.
I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.

This is a story exploring how our physicians become doctors. It is both exciting and horrifying. I did find the swearing excessive and unnecessary. In fact, for me, the story almost go lost. This e-bookk was received through goodreads.

This book felt very scattered. I didn't feel connected to the characters, but that twist at the end!
