My new neighbor is looking for a nanny. Cool. But what starts with accidental encounters in the bathroom, ends with passionate nights in his bedroom – and now we’re in a fake-marriage! Brad is a fearless firefighter risking his life for others. But he’s messed up when it’s about saving himself. After his wife has left him heartbroken with a small child, he’s looking for a nanny. I take the job because I need to pay my bills as my own demons are haunting me. Everything seems to be going well until his ex comes back seeking sole custody for their son. Brad’s lawyer advises him to show the judge a new wife so he can keep the baby. Now we have to play pretend for 8 weeks until the trial is over. But what starts as fake, soon becomes very intense and real. All of a sudden, I ask myself three critical questions: 1) What if Brad’s ex finds out everything is set up? 2) What will my real husband say? 3) When should I tell Brad that the result of my pregnancy test is anything but fake?
Ok I have to believe that all the five and four star ratings of this book were by friends and family members of the author. This was definitely NOT more that a 1 or 2 star (if you’re being very generous) story.
First of all it was just too long. There was not enough substance to this story or the author’s writing style to justify 40 chapters and an epilogue. And as much as I like a steamy story, I felt there were WAY too many descriptive sex scenes between the characters. I mean okay I get it, they are young and healthy and in love with each other (even though they have not gotten the courage to speak the words) and they want to express what they feel for one another in a physical way until they are ready to do it verbally. I get that. I just don’t think it was necessary to have a description of it every single time. I found myself skimming quite a lot toward the end of the book—definitely through the love scenes. If the author had cut some of them out, she probably could have shaved about 10-12 chapters off the book.
Or here’s a thought, maybe instead of all the sex scenes, she could have written a more fleshed out storyline regarding the two main characters’ ex-spouses. Why introduce the drama of Clay’s stalking and Brenda suddenly wanting to take away Isaac if you weren’t going to better explain how those plot lines were resolved? Clay nearly killed Mika and Isaac. What happened after that? Jail? An insane asylum? Who knows? And I suppose Brad (worst name for a romantic lead EVER by the way) won the custody battle but why not write a small scene or at least a paragraph that clearly stated that?
Anyway, I just wanted to add my two cents so other readers aren’t so quickly swayed by all the “OMG THIS BOOK IS SO GREAT!” reviews the way I was. If you’re looking for character and plot development and a resolution to the story that doesn’t read as though the author just got bored and wanted to tie things up quickly, you may want to hard pass on this book.
I have to say that I am a fan of Sarah's. That being said I am not sure why in Unexpected Heat that she felt the need to write 400 + pages where it could have been done in half that and had a way better book. Half of this book was just sex and no substance. I am not a fan of books that are like that. I want a true love story with a real story. Usually, you get that with Sarah, so I jump at the chance when she comes out with a book. But with this book, I skimmed half or more of the story.
I hope Unexpected Heat is not a new theme of writing for her.
This book is 80% sex and 20% storyline. There is the start of a story and you get a bare bones plot but mostly you get the same graphic sex scenes with the same dialogue over and over - about every 5 or 6 pages. He creams and she screams. You will see what I mean if you decide to read this one.
Then, suddenly, it’s the end of the book. At no time were these two ever enemies so I have no idea what that title is about! And I won’t even bother detailing the awkward phrasing and sentence structure that would suddenly pop up.
A sexy single dad and the new neighbour next door. Brad a fireman living his best life for him and his 5 year old son Issac after walking in to discover his wife cheating on him with the neighbour. Mila an artist trying to clear her head and refocus on her art after her recent divorce, rents the house next door to the sweetest young boy and the sexiest man. This is a heartwarming story filled with heartache betrayal and such sexual chemistry. A wonderful read.
What a great Book. Both of them have had horrible experiences before meeting each other, but the way they come together in the book is so great, if I could give it more than five stars I would
So, after reading "Say you'll stay" by this Author, which I found somewhat interesting, I decided to give this book a try. I'm beyond disappointed. This book reads like it was written by a teen, and while "Say you'll stay" wasnt the best written book this by far was the worst and really doesn't even sound like the same author wrote it. I get that some people like their books "steamy" and I too love a good sex scene or two in my books but the sex in this book was so often and so lacking in heat every single time that I ended up just skipping past them after the first two. It baffles me how this book has such high ratings. The writing was weird, the plot was basically nonexistent and the ending was so rushed it felt like I skipped some pages. I give up on this author.
I have to laugh because I started this series backwards. I read the 3rd book first and now this one. Lol! Oh Well, I absolutely loved it! I love the characters Brad and Mila and adore little Isaac. Brad and Mila have an instant attraction for each other, they've both been left by their spouses for someone else and are really against starting anything new. When Mila goes to LA to get away from her ex who unfortunately has come back wanting to get back together. He is a complete and total arrogant conceited *sshole and thinks Mila is just going to jump right back into his arms. He was mentally abusive and controlling then he starts having an affair and just up and leaves her. So she goes away to take a break and regroup. She's an artist and is having painters block. Lol. When she's lying in the sun this adorable little boy from next door shows up and just starts chatting away and Mila loves him instantly, then his daddy shows up and HOLY MOTHER OF HOTNESS her panties catch on fire. Lol! Brad hasn't been interested in anyone since he caught his wife in bed with their next door neighbor who just so happened to live in the house that Mila is now renting. His wife just leaves him and their son Isaac never to be heard from again so needless to say both Brad and Mila have every reason to be cautious and guarded but they can't help the attraction and they fight with themselves to not follow through on their arousal. When something happens that is the beginning of everything. The sex is aplenty and you better hold on ladies I thought my Kindle was gonna spontaneously combust. WOOH! At times I was laughing out loud and I cried and sometimes I got so choked up it was hard to swallow. Sarah definitely knows how to bring on the heat, her writing style is so descriptive it paints a very vivid picture in your head. My emotions were all over the place. When an unexpected guest shows up I was like No Freakin Way! Then as if that wasn't enough Mila's ex *sshole starts harassing her. As things continue to heat up between Brad and Mila there is sex aplenty and hold on tight ladies your Kindle may spontaneously combust. At times the suspense gets intense and at times my heart was breaking and at times I was so p*ssed off I could have thrown my Kindle across the room. I loved every minute of it. I highly recommend this series to everyone. Lol! Now I'm off to read book #1. 😄
i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the story of Brad and Mila. Brad is a single father to five year old Isaac and is a firefighter. Mila is an artist and recently divorced. Mila's husband left her for another woman with kids, but is now trying to get back with her. Mila doesn't want him back and decides to move to California for a new start, and hopefully she can start to paint again. When Mila moves in next door to Brad, he is instantly attracted to her and Isaac decides she is his new friend. When Brad needs someone to watch Isaac after work, Mila offers and Brad asks her to be Isaac's nanny. With Brad's schedule, they decide Mila should stay with them through the week when Brad has to work. Soon Brad and Mila can't fight the attraction to one another any longer, but Brad never wants to get married again after his ex left with the neighbor. Mila just wants a fling because she is not ready for love and they agree to keep feelings out of it. When Brad's ex-wife shows up suddenly wanting custody of Isaac, Brad asks Mila for help and they decide to marry so it looks better for the courts. Mila doesn't tell Brad her ex-husband is still calling her and demanding her return to him. I really enjoyed this story. I think both Brad and Mila loved each other, but they were scared of being hurt again. Isaac was adorable, he was a great kid. I think this was one of the best by Sarah. Good one.
Gotta love a hot firefighter that takes his job of singly raising his son as serious as he does putting out fires. His trust in women was obliterated when he caught his wife cheating with the neighbor then left him and their son Isaac without a backward glance. Mila is a successful artist that is having a painter's block since her divorce and decides to go on a type of sabbatical. Meeting the new neighbor is definitely a new experience in this case and Mila and Isaac form a special friendship that will melt your heart. When Brad is in a jam for a sitter Mila agrees to become a nanny to help out...and spending time with Brad is no hardship. When Brad's ex wife shows up out of the blue demanding custody all bets are off and Brad will do anything to keep the son she walked out on. A fake marriage for two people with trust issues is the only way to go but as time runs out Brad's fears get the best of him and Mila gets the brunt. When did fake begin to turn real and what happens when Mila gets those lines on a little stick?? The road to happiness is paved with good intentions and these two create a highway!!! The characters are great and Isaac will steal your heart. It great to catch up with Brook and Jason from a previous story. Looking forward to the next Sarah J. Brooks story. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and happily purchased a copy for my favorites collection.

Unexpected Heat by Sarah J Brooks is a good read with plenty happening to keep the reader completely engaged and compelled. These characters, Mila and Brad, are fantastic. Brad is the perfect hero, protective, kind, considerate, a gentleman and sometimes NOT a gentleman at all in all the right ways. Mila is another wonderful, strong woman who by chance moves next door and it turns out to be such a great thing for both of them. The plot of this book is exciting as Brad and Mila get to know one another and their pasts interfere from time to time. But what I loved the most about this book is that no matter what negative thought or assumption occurs, these two communicate. There’s still the emotional drama, ups and downs, etc. but Brad and Mila always talk it out. That was really refreshing! Overall, a good read with really wonderful characters that find love and family for a very special HEA.
OMG SMOKING HOT 🥵🥵🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥🔥 Mila goes to la for a vacation to get away from her ex husband and to inspire her to paint again. Brad was a firefighter and a single dad with a son Issac. When he sees his new neighbour he wants her when they meet its Issac who introduces them and the fireworks starts. Brad has no one to look after Issac because his friends wife has to take one of her child to the doctors so Mila offers to look after him for Brad so she becomes his nanny and they get really close and heat up the sheets. Brilliant written with lots of chemistry and steamy sex scenes and great characters with the ex’s turning back up and coursing problems for Mila, Brad and Issac with a lots of surprises along the way. I Really loved this book and read it in one day couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to read other books from this Author. I don’t want to spoil so I REALLY DO RECOMMEND READING THIS BOOK.
I received this book and leave my honest opinion and review.
This book has a lot of steam! Mila’s husband, now ex, is a real piece of work. I was glad to see Mila move away for a little while to get her head back on straight. She is lucky and moves next to a hot fireman, Brad, and his adorable five year old son Isaac. I loved Issac and couldn’t get enough of him. Mila and Brad have both sworn off getting married again after what their ex’s did to each of them. But they sure haven’t sworn off bed time! I think it was the best thing Mila did when she offered to watch Issac after school for Brad. I loved watching the two grow closer and how Issac loved Mila. Both of their ex’s come back into the picture at different times and cause trouble. It was a good book that I encourage you to read. I was given a copy of the book and voluntarily wrote a review.
Decent read and a sexy, steamy one that showcased how difficult Brad and Mila had staying off each other. Their relationship really took off and happened quickly. It was an instant attraction and they fell into a rhythm that seemed natural. Both have suffered through failed marriages and cheating spouses. Brad is an easy going guy with a strong sense of fairness. Mila did come across as a little naive especially when it came to her ex. She ignores red flags that are slapping her in the face, stomach, ass, ..you get the picture. Lol. Who couldn’t see the warning signs but the better question is why Mila constantly dismissed her intuition. I like the easy camaraderie that Brad and Mila developed and the sharing of duties/responsibilities that they each took on. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This is another winner for Sarah. Brad and Mila have both been burned by their exes. When Mila moves to L.A., she moves in next door to Brad. She ends up becoming the nanny. While they are both deeply attracted to each other, they don’t want to have a relationship. While it works at first, it becomes more complicated. Brad’s ex-wife is back and wants her son whom she abandoned. Brad decides to take a drastic step and asks Mila to marry him. She agrees because she knows that Brad is a great father and will do what it takes for Brad to win his custody battle. While it starts out fake, feelings start to come into it. Will they finally admit their feelings to each other. This is a cute story with some angst, drama in the form of exes and some combustible chemistry.
What a phenomenal new book from Sarah J. Brooks filled with passion, fake marriage, custody battle, a secret baby, witty banter, and love. Brad is a single father in need of a nanny. Mila is an artist looking for a new start. The attraction between the two is off the charts yet things become more complicated when a custody battle forces them into a fake marriage. Can Brad and Mila work through the complicated mess of their relationship and find the love each craves yet thinks unattainable? Unexpected Heat is a captivating and heartwarming story of second chances, belonging, and finding true love. Readers will fall in with Brad and Mila and their story. A new book readers won't be able to put down. "I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book."
This is my 3rd book by Sarah J. Brooks. I loved the first two so much I bought this one. The storyline was a good concept. I also enjoy romances with steamy love scenes but this was over the top even for me. I had to finish it to get to the ending but I scrolled thru about 90% of the sex scenes to get to the storyline. I still enjoyed the book but it but I felt like I would get 2 minutes of story and 10 minutes of descriptive sex. I will try another book by Sarah because of the first two enemies to lovers romance. And this was not an enemies to lovers book, it was instant attraction straight to excessive heated sex with a storyline sporadically thrown in. Like I said I love a steamy romance but the sex scenes did take away from the book.
UNEXPECTED HEAT By Sarah J. Brooks I loved this story! Mila is a successful portrait painter who is in a slump due to painter’s block. She has an abusive ex husband who decides to come back into her life when his new life doesn’t work out for him. Brad is a single firefighter father with his young son Isaac. When Mila decides to move far away to escape her ex, she moves into the house next to Brad and Isaac. She soon is enamored with her neighbors. You need to read to find out the rest, you will be happy you did. Sarah always brings well written solid stories, insanely hot chemistry, some angst, and drama. This is a 5 star read.
This was a good story that was well developed and believable. I really found the love story to be beautiful and the sensual moments real and loving. The strong emphasis on family was a delight to read about. The main male character was a devoted family man, community volunteer and had very strong bonds with his friends. The main female character was previously involved in an abusive relationship and she treasured her new little family. Good Stuff!
I voluntarily received an advance review copy of this novel from the author and I am leaving an honest and unbiased review. I have no affiliation to this author.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. Flippin heck, what a story, loved it. You can tell from the beginning, when a story grabs your attention it is going to be good. When Mila moves in next door to firefighter Brad and his son Isaac, her life is going to change dramatically. If ever two people deserve each other, it is them. From the moment they met, their attraction was instant. Now Brad needs help, someone to look after Isaac and Mila agrees. Now the fun starts. Lots of chemistry, passion, lust, friendship and throw in the mix two crazy exes, a custody battle and a surprise baby, well, all I can say is... the housework won’t get done once you start reading this.
There is nothing hotter than a man in a uniform. Fireman+nanny+fake marriage=surprise surprise! Brad, a single father, and Mila, his nanny, have been battered around in their past relationships. Mila can put her differences aside to be a nanny to Brad's son, Isaac. Things get hot and spicy in Brad's and Mila's relationship until the ex-wife shows back up and stirs up trouble. Hopefully, Brad will get his head out of the ground and wake up to what he had with Mila. It has been a while since I have read a book by this author. I sure have missed out on her great writing of couples and the growth of their relationships. Enjoy!❤
This was a super easy read. The characters were easy to love and their romance was one that seemed to merge together quite easily. It was said to be an enemies to lovers romance but that’s not the case at all. Mila and Brad were a fun pair and their past tried to cause a rift between them but each ripple was short lived. The dramatics were there but soon faded. One thing I will say is that once the book neared the end, it was like the author wanted to jam the info too quickly to end the book. That was felt and I wish more time was given for more details at the end and in the epilogue. It left me wanting to know more about where they ended up.
Mila needs some time away and ends up renting a house next to Brad, who is a firefighter and single dad. Mila takes the job as his nanny as she needs the cash and soon sparks are flying between them. What will happen when his ex comes back and wants full custody of their child? His lawyer advises to show the judge his new happy family but will Mila pretend to be his wife? Fast-paced read with twists and turns, drama, steam and emotion. Great characters that draw you in to this entertaining story. I liked it.
Love, love, loved Mila and Brad. Mila is an artist who lost her mojo and needs time away to try and get it back. Brad is a firefighter and a single dad to Isaac who is absolutely adorable. These two meet when Mila rents the house next door to Brad, the chemistry and spark are there instantly. He’s in need of a nanny and why not, right? They both have baggage and what happens when the past comes back to haunt you? Their story is sweet, loving, emotional and heartfelt. There are twists and obstacles to move past for these two to find happiness. I received a copy of this book.
A steamy story filled with page turning dialogue. Brad is a single dad and sexy firefighter. He is not looking for another relationship when he meets his new sexy neighbor Mila. Mila is trying to rebuild her self esteem after it was destroyed by her ex-husband. Vacation becomes a do over for her where she discovers a hot guy and an adorable little boy. This is an excellent story that highlights the ills of emotionally disturbing relationships and how healing a great one can be. It also shows a great father fighting with all he has for his child. A story well worth reading.
4.5 Stars! This is the story of Brad and Mia. Both have had heartache in their past and are divorced. Brad has the cutest son and is one hot fireman. They both are dealing with issues from their ex's and don't want a relationship though the attraction is really strong. They are brought closer from how they each care for Brad's son and the electric attraction that they can't ignore. Well written book with good characters and a story line that keeps you reading.
I voluntarily wrote this review from reading an advanced copy of this book.
Mila left her town and went to LA. Moving next door to Brad a single father and a firefighter with Isaac his 5 year old son. Once Brad meet Mila she became a nanny and moved in. Lets just say the chemistry was off the charts and the next thing they are in bed. They relationship goes from nanny to a fake wife to save Isaac from his mother taking him away from Brad. Lets just say this book is an emotional rollercoaster, has wonderful characters, steamy sex and the HEA.
This was a good story. However, I would not classify it as enemies to lovers in the slightest. It was written well with plenty of content and steamy bits.
Mila was getting away from her painters block and ex husband. She vacations in LA and happens to rent a house next to hot single dad, Brad. They meet due to Brad's son Isaac. Like Mila, Brad has been burned before and is not looking for anything serious. However, like in any good story, there are twists throughout that make them change their minds.
