Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, who is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.
His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to make illustrations of birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred Tennyson's poems.
As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes and alphabets. He also composed and published twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry.

Evanescent. Efficacious. Scroobious. Mucilaginous. Slobaciously. Cutaneous. Plumdomphious.

Best to brush up on your vocabulary and pronunciation before reading this book aloud to your kids, because these and other words of similar kind, are what you’ll run into on every page. And it’s quite the treat, to be sure!

Violet, Slingsby, Guy and Lionel are siblings that embark on a trip around the world. Which world, I’m not so sure, as they come across all manner of odd things. An island with mice eating a hill of custard pudding. A country where the Bluebottle Flies live. Crusty crabs who are in want of mittens and so much more.

It’s such a lark and the illustrations are wonderfully creative! I definitely recommend this one!

An imaginative and cute short story about four children who travel around the world and come across many fantastical creatures along the way. The tale has the feel of a children's book but also includes some high-level vocabulary and invented tongue-twisting words which makes it an enjoyable read for adults to tap back into their kid at heart. My one regret was how it ended but it was otherwise a fun read.
