This "Understanding Poetry" series sadly does not circulate at my library (poetry in general struggles). Too bad, because these books are great poetry primers! Most kids won't check it out for themselves, unless they're really interested in writing poetry, but I think it would be a great teaching resource for tweens and teens. The elements of poetry are explained well and demonstrated through famous poems. The illustrations are generally very nice. And I particularly appreciate the numerous writing exercises in the back. The only thing I don't like is the graphic design. I find the floating letters in the background of each page really distracting.
Discussion of the rhythm of poetry, how it is achieved and why it can be effective. Well-known poems are included throughout, with specific explanation as to how varying rhythm, rhyme and meter were utilised.
It is boring to read about poetry, kind of like trying to explain a card catalog. But this book gives good definitions to forms of poetry, and the use of meter, alliterations and so on.
