Passage to Natchez

Rate this book
Judd evokes both the brutal realism and adventurous spirit of the early American frontier in Passage to Natchez. It was a time of violent change tha t would shape the destiny of a young nation--and its proud people. Across the wilderness they blazed a trail of blood and glory culminating in the great earthquake of 1811, which both shattered fortunes and opened the way for unlimited opportunity for those who survived.

Despite the cover art on my copy, this is not a western

A hard edged novel of peril and adventure on the western frontier when that frontier was EAST of the Mississippi River. This historical novel splendidly mixes fictional and real people and history of the western frontier area of Southern Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. There are a number of villains but the main ones are the Harpe brothers. Little Harpe and Big Harpe are drawn much as the two infamous murderers, torturers, thieves and America's first recorded serial killers must have actually been.

This is a far flung story which eventually brings all of its diverse characters together. It is not a short book nor is it particularly easy to read. Partly because of the unremitting chronicle of evil and villains which plagued the frontier.

Powerful Historical Fiction

This book was intriguing as I live in East TN but grew up in West TN with family roots in Mississippi. It covered all these areas including Kentucky which is close to my home in East TN. I have traveled part of the Trace and hope to travel more and appreciate the struggles of those who have gone before us. I appreciate the author's writing abilities and making one able to feel the emotions of his characters!

Story of a young woman's trip down the Mississippi River from Northern Kentucky (near Cincinnati) to Natchez, and the lowlifes she has to deal with on the journey.
