Secret baby is not a good trope for MW. Here she gives it a whirl, gifting her heroine with beauty, poise, horsemanship, musical talent, organizational flair, intelligence, etc. . .

We are *told* all of that but all we are *shown* is:
*A heroine who is too weak to stand up for the hero when her autocratic father frames him for theft and runs him out of town.
*A heroine who marries the aristocratic OM after discovering she’s pregnant and never telling him her daughter is not his.
*A heroine who puts up with a cheating husband out of guilt.
*A heroine who lives with her evil father (knowing he’s evil) until he dies.
*A heroine who lies to the hero even when he discovers his daughter is his.

The hero doesn’t fair much better. He’s full of revenge that goes nowhere since all he has done is:
*Bought the heroine’s home and vineyard and restores it to its former grandeur.
*Pays heroine’s father’s medical bills and gives him a home until he dies.
*Dispatches the obsessive OW as soon as he sees the heroine again.
*Tells the OW *again* that she’s nuts.
*Sends his lawyers after the OW.
*Falls immediately in love with his daughter and sets out to be best dad ever.
*Aside from a few half-hearted insults, the hero picks up where their love affair left off before he was betrayed by heroine’s father.

*sigh* There was no story. Heroine was a wimp. Hero was a beta who just happened to be rich. Their daughter was the best thing in the story.

The H must be a saint. Discovering that he has a child which the h kept secret from him, although he had done nothing wrong, and being relatively nice about it. Even when the h keeps lying that the child is not his until a DNA test prevents her from keep telling lies.

The h is weak and a liar. She married another man because she was pregnant with the H’s child and she let that other man believe the child was his. Yet she keeps rolling in selfpity.

The H deserves a better woman.

As always with Margaret Way books there's this annoying something! Although she writes characters that are so overwhelmed by each other!! But they are also sooo many voice which isn't necessarily bad but not necessarily great!

To be honest I love the little girl, but the mother Susannah omg when she kept lying! I hate a spineless woman!!

Adrienne was a useless character! Completely idiotic as a character, she was a pointless addition to the story!!!

The father dying was a cop out!! Like I wish he got to live and atone for his sins!!
