This is one of the most pleasant baby book i've come across. I found the breastfeeding advice especially encouraging and helpful. Jo Ryan has her own settling technique which she describes as sitting between controlled crying and attachment parenting methods. It involves a whole lot of patting. Although j agree with her advice of putting baby down while calm but still awake, patting just doesn't cut it.
Overall i found this a well rounded book.

Borrowed this from the library. Baby due in 2 weeks so yet to put into practice but seemed useful. May need to buy a copy in a few weeks.

One of the nicer parenting books I've read - tells you to trust your gut, but if you need concrete advice, it's there too. Was helpful when I was a first time mum.

Not terrible but didn't resonate with me. Particularly the settling techniques; just left bub sad and me sad and feeling inadequate.

I read only the parts from 12 weeks on as my son was already 18 weeks when I grabbed this book from the library. The toddler bit I only skimmed.

It's fine, very simple, short and to the point. However I don't think the settling technique is going to work for my son. It only seemed to make him more upset. He's 4 months and I've found that staying in the room and letting him sort himself to sleep (he likes to rub his face with his lovey) it only takes him 5-15min to get himself to sleep. I don't rush him through phases and he just seems ready to start settling himself. Rather than getting him addicted to patting I find letting him whinge a little but know I'm still there for him keeps him calm for the whole settling process. In a few more days I'll leave the room before he's asleep. He basically ignores me after a minute or two anyway. But I'm sure this would work great for other kids and maybe would have when he was younger. May still try it to get him through night wakings if they become more frequent as they are predicted to at 5.5 months.

I am a fan of her routines which are much less rigid than others I'm seen. I'm nudging him toward her 18 week to 6 month routine at the moment and I think it will work well for us once it's being done consistently!
