Fifteen-year-old Reuben Cole is about to learn about the viciousness of the lawless West. After he comes to the aid of a fleeing Native American pursued by a murderous gang, Reuben accidentally kills one of them and puts his own life in danger. A whirlwind of danger ensues, as Reuben is pursued by a band of ruthless killers. Baptized in the violence of the unforgiving West, Reuben has to learn the arts of tracking and survival. These harsh lessons from his early days will turn him into the dangerous, powerful man he is to become. This is the large print edition of Born To Track, with a larger font / typeface for easier reading.
My first published book 'Cold Hell in Darley Dene' (written as Glenn Stuart) was the culmination of years of trying to get myself into print. Back in 1979 I submitted a novel to a publisher, and in 2009 Darley Dene was accepted. Thirty years of honing my skills, and learning a lot about the world. If I had the chance, I'd almost certainly re-write all of my books, improve them, make them more solid, because the more we write, the better we get. This is what has happened to 'Darley Dene'. It's now available as 'Lament for Darley Dene', re-written and improved. Soon, you will find the same with 'The Pawnbroker', a horror story which I am sure many out there will enjoy. My current day-job is being a teacher, a job I love. Without it I would not be able to continue to write; it also gives me a wealth of characters and so many ideas. The bills get paid too! I write now as Stuart G Yates in a range of genres. Unflinching is my best-selling Western, but if you like historical fiction, thrillers or spine-tingling horror, I am sure I have a title for you. For the moment, I live in Spain, which is not so wonderful as people try to make out, and I would dearly love to return to Old Blighty, find a little cottage and write full time. Or the Philippines and be with my fiance, marry her, find happiness. Dreams, but dreams that I am trying very hard to make true. Afterall, it's dreaming what writers do best...don't they?
The good guys, if you can call them that, just don't seem to jell
This could have been five stars, if there weren't so many different ones to keep up with! I was somewhat confused at times who h was which! There are some great descriptive storylines at times, and then I found it hard to decide who was who! The characters, and some of them were truly characters of distinctiveness, while some were downright ruthless! I, basically, enjoyed riding along with this group of misfits when they decided who was wrong and who right! Just wasn't of Mr. Yates normal fact moving series of on going excitement! Try it, you may love it!!!😃
You are basically buying a novella. No where near a complete story. There are two kinds of series books. One where you get a complete story, as part of a longer saga. The other is where you have to buy one piece at a time. This is the latter. I don’t appreciate Authors who try to cash in on their series. There is no real plot here. The characters are lacking in details. The scene settings are poor. I suggest you look elsewhere for a Western.
I always start a review of a book in mind before finishing the book. I waffled on this review, but decided on a four star review because I had trouble with point of view in this book. I thought, in the first instance that pov was in the young main character, Reuben. But the book went from one writer, one story teller to another on several occasions and I didn't feel the pov was clarified. I enjoyed the story with all that in mind, enjoyed the characters created for this thread which no doubt will continue as a series. I will read the next one for sure.
I thought that it was a good storyline that takes place just prior to the Civil War… A boy (age 14) rapidly transitions into a man when faced with life threatening circumstances and is forced into gunplay with bad characters on the western frontier. Being a Civil War buff, I bought the next book in the series to see what becomes of Reuben as he joins the Union Army as a scout…
This is an interesting book, with a lot of action. Shows young Reuben starting his growing up. The characters are interesting, with a development that shows the ruff side of the west. The story had good flow showing the fighting side and that every shot doesn’t kill. Read and enjoy.
Stuart G. Yates has written an excellent first book in a series that promises to be an exciting series. If his first book is any indication of what is to follow he’s hooked me, because as soon as I complete this review I’m buying book two.
This was a good western story about Reuben Cole, a fourteen year old boy growing into his manhood on his father's ranch amidst the vile and corrupt ranch hands who worked there. It had plenty of action, gunfights and murders. It takes place right before the Civil War and was an interesting tale.
An exceptionally truthful story of a young man's coming of age.
Superbly written with a great deal of insight into a young man's learning and becoming a man in the untamed west at the beginning of America's Civil War.
Western fiction that takes you into the action. Go with Reuben as he goes from boy to man in just a few short months. Living in the West with no laws, guns for justice and the war simmering in the East made you grow to adulthood quickly.
Rueben Cole is a young man with a dream that turns into a nightmare. His adventure with the friends he makes and the formidable enemies and the way he gets out of scrapes makes the story a little unbelievable.
Generally I don't like "3rd person" stories, but this one grabbed me quick and didn't let go. I would love to see this adapted into a screenplay. It was the best of the best in the western genre. I Loved it!!!! Stuart G. Yates wrote a masterpiece!!!
ADULT Historical Western Adventure🐺🔪🔫💪🐎. Best novel chronicles the life of Ruben🐺🔪🔫💪🐎 born on a ranch🐎🐃 in the early west. Graphic Violence💀🔪🔫💪 abounds throughout the series of novels.
I got this e-book from amazon with kindle unlimited.
A well written novel that carries the reader along giving a realistic view of the lawlessness of the Wild West, the need to grow up quickly, the almost visceral hatred of the native Americans and the biblical approach to justice. Will definately read more of this author.
A rather interesting western novel about a young man growing up. This young man is thrown into several situations that made him become a young but experienced person.
I love reading books like this. A lot of blood and gore. Only bad people or the one's that are not really good die. When I was young, I would dream of being a Cowboy, Hunter and Trapper, Lewis and Clarke Explorer.
Like too many books, this one was enjoyable but ended too soon. Otherwise, it was pretty much a typical western with lots of shooting of mostly bad guys and some good or kind of good guys
