Yes, I am to a point both willing and able to appreciate the short (sometimes a bit dated but always amusing) episodic anecdotes featured, presented in Ilse Kleberger's 1964 children's novel Unsre Oma. And I therefore also admire (and personally like) the Piselang children's grandmother (Oma) and that Klebeger has depicted, has rendered her as an entertaining, optimistically positive combination of a typical and traditional German style Bilderbuchoma (a grandma right out of a traditional, classical picture book, clad in long mutedly coloured dresses and flowing skirts) and as someone who has remained eternally young at heart, is fiercely independent, roller skates in her bedroom and is also and above all able to provide lessons of deportment and even criticism of as well as discipline for her grandchildren organically and with a constant, always present sense of affection, fun and games. However, I have of truth be told also found the vast majority of the episodes of Unsre Oma more than a bit tedious and too standardly mundane, too stereotypical, and that as such, the chapters of Unsre Oma (each of which contains a stand-alone short episode) really do not contain anything truly all that novel, imaginative or innovative (with me having encountered ALL of Ilse Kleberger's presented episodes of Unsre Oma in multiple different, but always rather similar manifestations of humorous episodic family type novels in English, German and French children's novels).

And while Oma's roller-skating, while her attitude towards life in general is definitely refreshing and yes, even really avant-garde, the themes themselves and how they are presented by Ilse Kleberger, the actual contents of the eleven episodes of Unsre Oma, they really are so stereotypically similar to the contents of many other family tales I have perused over the years, that for all intents and purposes, reading about how Oma accompanies Jan when he decides to "emigrate" or how Oma saves Jürgen after he crashes through the ice while skating has really not been all that diverting, and only barely entertaining at best, and I actually did but skim the last two episodes due to boredom and simply wanting to finally be done with Unsre Oma (and that the novel is also not particularly "German" in feel either, not an issue in and of itself perhaps, but for me, it kind is that).

Finally, while the sequel to Ilse Kleberger's Unsre Oma, while her Ferien mit Oma was a true and cherished favourite of my childhood (and a novel that even when I reread it, I could still appreciate and like, although no longer massively love), I am actually rather glad not to have read, not to have encountered Unsre Oma as a child, for I think that even as a child, I would have found Ilse Kleberger's eleven chapters, the eleven presented mini-stories too commonplace, too annoyingly same old same old, too frustratingly similar with regard to contents and general thematics to other similar novels I had read. Thus only two stars for Unsre Oma, and no, not really all that recommended and as such not really worth looking for either (although there is an English language translation available with the book title of Grandmother Oma but which I have not read).

What a delightful REread this was for me! It was such a literal laugh out loud story of this wise, loving and whimsical grandmother :) I had read it a long time ago in childhood and of course forgotten now, other than knowing I had enjoyed it. I was feeling nostalgic lately and so rereading some of my childhood favourites for sentimental reasons. Well worth having kids read this lovely ,easy to read chapter book.....

"Nasza babcia" to książka z mojego dzieciństwa, którą szczerze dobrze wspominam. Historia jest prosta - jest babcia, a ona wychowuje 6 wnuków. Nie jest to taka typowa babcia, która siedzi i dzierga na drutach tylko taka bardziej "cool" - jeździ na wrotkach, ma świeże, nowoczesne podejście do życia i ma olbrzymie serce do swoich wnuków. Dzieciaki mają swoje pragnienia, kaprysy oraz fantazje, a babcia jak to babcia - chce je spełniać.

Ciepła oraz przyjemna lektura - tak to mogę podsumować.
