Hart #6

Matter of Time

Rate this book
No one has ever wanted me so why would she? My name is Kade Maxwell.
You probably don't remember me. I'm not a rich athlete. I'm not a bar owner. Hell, I'm not even in medical school like the guy I thought was my older brother. I'm just a college guy with no family trying to figure out the direction my life is taking. That means taking classes, gaming with my online friends and working behind the counter of a premiere sports bar. I enjoy it. I make good tips and have regular social interaction with interesting people. Unfortunately, that social interaction has taken an awkward turn now that the woman I love from a distance is slinging drinks behind the bar with me. As the soon-to-be sister-in-law of my boss, Nicole Willoughby is off-limits. Not just because she's too good for me - and with her beauty both inside and out, she is - but because she's still healing from the worst kind of betrayal. It makes my stomach turn just thinking about the abuse she suffered at her ex's hands. When he begins poking around in her new life, I instinctively know someone like me, who no one would call an alpha male, could never protect her. But I can offer up the empty bedroom in my apartment so she never has to fear being alone. It seems to be a solution that works for everyone, except maybe my bleeding heart. But I'll put up with it as long as she is safe. Because I'd rather have her as a friend and a roommate than not have her at all.

Nicole has recently reunited with her older sister after escaping a harrowing relationship that will forever leave an impact on her life. As much as Kiersten was devastated for her, she is so happy to be able to have her a part of their daily life. It takes a while for Nicole to heal physically but the emotional and mental things will take time to work through.

Nicole lives in the apartment attached to Paul & Kiersten’s place of business, a local bar that is a favourite with the pro sports teams. It has a great reputation of offering the players privacy while they enjoy a drink with their teammates. The apartment offers her a place of her own that is secure and makes her feel safe.

After spending so much time in the bar, Nicole is finally ready to take up the offer to work for Paul. She is already familiar with the regular patrons which will help her adjust to dealing with customers and building her confidence up. However, what really helps her is working with Kade. She has been harbouring a bit of a secret crush on him and really enjoys his company. He is someone she truly admires because he is one of those people that is genuinely kind and thoughtful.

When danger comes knocking on her doorstep, Kade is quick to offer her a place to stay. He will sleep better knowing that the girl he is falling love with is close by. Wait what? Yup, Kade totally has a thing for Nicole but he feels like she is out of his league. He is lacking in confidence when it comes to girls so can’t be sure how she feels about him. For now he is happy just to be in her company, making her feel safe.

‘I reach over slowly so as to not startle her and slide my hand under hers. I need her to know she can remove her clasp from mine whenever she chooses. That she’s in control of this contact, no matter how innocent it may be.’

Being in Kade’s company is something Nicole looks forward to every day, she loves the easy friendship they have and it makes her crush grow even more. However, when the knocking danger has everyone on high alert, Kade begins to doubt what he has with Nicole. How could someone like him possibly protect her from being hurt? Can he really step up and ask her to have faith in him when he doesn’t have in himself?

After meeting Nicole in Matters to You I was looking forward to her story and I was not disappointed. I loved the slow building connection between her and Kade, they were simply perfect for each other.

“I watch you all the time when no one is looking so I know every detail of your face, which means I can tell. I also just said to much again, didn’t I?...”
“I like that you enjoy my face so much.”
“I do. Enjoy it. So please say you’ll just spend one night so you can rest.”

Okay, seriously with the sweetness. These guys were adorable. Matter of Time is a sweet slow burn with a kick of suspense.

Kade and Nicole are coworkers and have both been harboring hidden feelings for one another. They are two of the *sweetest* characters I’ve read in quite awhile.

Nicole is recovering mentally and emotionally from an abusive relationship and Kade also has a little brokenness within from a youth of not really belonging.

I have to pause to say YES! YES! with the sweet and swoony non-alpha hero who isn’t 6’4 with a ripped physique. I *covet* these romantic stories with realistic men who may be on the shorter and snuglier side. I’m noticing romancelandia is more and more celebrating heroines embracing their dimples and curves. Yet, heroes who may *not* be society’s “ideal” physical male specimen are few and far between and so when it happens- I am HERE FOR IT!

But, I digress. I loved that the heroine in particular is so well fleshed out. Nicole has been the victim of something horrific and her fears and thoughts were real and honest. This is, above all else, her story. She is seeing an amazing therapist (yay! Therapy in books 💙) and as usual M.E. Carter broaches these hard subjects with sensitivity and truth and wisdom. Kade is a calming presence and loves her immediately in the way only young people can. He made me smile again and again.

“You make me feel like I’m in control, she continues. Like I can be myself completely. Like I can let me guard down with you and I’m not afraid that you’ll hurt me.”

I have grown to love this supportive and encouraging family unit these friends have created for themselves and I look forward to what comes next!

Kade and Nicole’s story is a different friends to lover’s tale. It also has a serious story beneath it all with Nicole coming out of an abusive relationship.

Another win in this series for M.E.Carter!

Even though it’s a tough subject to cover. She’s done it nicely and brought all our favorite characters from previous stories to this one as well.

The Hart gang will always have a special place in my heart!

We've met Nicole and Kade in prior books. Pairing them was genious. Gorgeous girl. Nerdy gamer boy. Who doesn't love that?

She's haunted by a past relationship. He admires from afar and doesn't want to push. It's kind of adorable. Then circumstances push them closer. Watching them bloom was sweet and innocent and very slow burn. The slowest. But perfect for this story.

I enjoy all the interaction of the prior characters and the love they all feel for one another. They are "family" and when they rally around Nicole in her time of need, it's heartwarming to see.

I loved this relationship. Their friendship. Their tender moments. The "falling in love". It was super sweet. Well done ME!

M.E. Carter writes some of my fave characters. No matter if they are just a bartender or a famous athlete she always makes them relatable to all of us in some way. This book was no different on that front.

Kade and Nicole just might be one of my top couples Carter has written. I really loved how their relationship was built on friendship first. Kade proved that sometimes protection isn't about muscle, it's just about being a safe space. This is why he is such a hero to me.

This is the perfect summer love story to read whether it be poolside, beachside or in the comfort of your own home.

I enjoyed Nicole and Kade's story but it was not entirely what I was expecting. This is not what I would call a romance novel. This is Nicole's story. This is Nicole overcoming her fears and learning to live again. Is there a love story that develops between Kade and Nicole - yes; but that isn't in the foreground. In my opinion it is a background story to Nicole's story. I liked this book and enjoyed the journey even though it was not what I was expecting. I recommend this one but not without reading at least Matters to You first.

4.75 Stars for this slow burn, friends to lovers story from the lovely M.E. Carter. A sweet, easy and enjoyable read. The latest in her Hart Series focuses on Nicole and Kade. Nicole is working to move on from her last relationship and the battering her heart took from her abusive ex. Kade has become a good friend thru all of this, and Nicole definitely has a crush on the somewhat shy, sometimes awkward bartender. Watching these two dance around the crushes they think no one notices was sweet. Seeing how protective Kade becomes when Nicole’s abusive ex reappears was endearing. Once the danger is dealt with and the insecurities Kade harbors are quelled, Nicole and he are able to finally find a happy ending.

I am in love with this series. this is the third book of this series that I have read. I love this book sixty-five million three thousand. Nicole walks into a bar and finds her perfect person. Kade is a gentleman in a world full of jerks. I love the growth that Nicole has during this book! She is so strong and I am glad that she has such a big support system. Carter is such a great author that she can turn a serious topic into an amazing story! I am so ready to read Ellery’s story now.

This story really tugged on my heartstrings for so many reasons! I found myself wanting to comfort and cuddle with Kade as much as I wanted to give Nicole a pep talk and some good life advise. When they each find their own courage sparks will surely fly! This is a multi-focal story that really kept my attention. As always, i want to hang out with this group of friends and frequent Frui Vita! As always with ME Carter books, I'll wait with baited breath until her next release!

Another fantastic book in the Hart series from ME Carter. I started reading this book with very very high hopes and was not disappointed in the least. I loved how beautifully the author handled a very difficult subject matter with this book (physical abuse) without making it feel overwhelming. I’ve been a fan of Kade’s since we first met him in book 3 and I’m so happy that he finally got his own book with the perfect heroine, Nicole. It’s the perfect summer read for your next afternoon at the pool.

Matter Of Time is the sixth book in the Hart series by M.E. Carter. This is a sweet, slow burn, work place romance between Kade Maxwell and Nicole Willoughby. We were introduced to both of them in Matters To You (Hart #5) which was about Nicole’s sister Kirsten, her son Carson and boyfriend Paul, who owns the Frui Vita bar where Kade now works.

“I know it with everything in me. It’s just a matter of time.”

Kade is a really nice, sweet and kind guy. He is loyal, calm and gentle. He is lacking in confidence due to his mother not taking any interest in him. He knows he’s not sexy, handsome or rich like all the athletes he serves at the bar. He enjoys playing video games with his friends he has met online and Matty, Jaxon’s real brother. He is at college but has no idea what major he wants to do for his degree or what he wants to do as a career.

Nicole is recovering from an abusive relationship with Jeremy and it has been a year since he beat her up so badly she ended up in hospital. Due to the lack of help and support from their mother, Kiersten went and bought her back so she could escape him. She had to drop out of college due to the move and has been living in the small apartment at the back of Paul’s bar.

Kade has been working at Frui Vita for the last six months. He feels he will end up as a barman forever as no idea what path he wants his life to take. We first met him when Jaxon thought they were brothers and had the same dad. It turned out they didn’t share DNA but they developed a strong friendship and Kade was made part of the family.

Nicole wants to get her life back and decides she wants to work for Paul. She is still very wary of men so can’t be a waitress but feels she could cope with being behind the bar. Kade has been constantly watching Nicole as she has sat in the corner in the evenings, people watching. He absolutely adores her but feels he isn’t good enough and doesn't deserve a girl like her. All he knows is he is in love with Nicole and can never tell her, however all she thinks is he wouldn’t want her as she so much baggage and still has nightmares over the abuse. The funny thing is everyone else can see how well they get on and like each other but neither will admit it. Tammy teases them over it along with Heath and Jaxon.

They are absolutely adorable together. They have long bouts of silence as they don’t know what to say to each other and lots of awkward moments. We find out the reason for some of this later on. This is a slow burn romance and at a pace that suits the couple. Nicole is learning to trust men again and Kade is finding the confidence to be in a relationship as he is very inexperienced.
He struggles with the thoughts of not being able to protect her when her past catches up with her again. All the athletes step forward to help and he feels useless beside them.

Carson her nephew was sweet again and it was great to catch up with everyone from the previous books. The Hart family, their friends and all the regulars at Frui Vita are such a great bunch. It was a touching moment when Annika talked to Nicole about what happened to her and why Paul was struggling with the aftermath of Nicole’s abuse. The support Kade got from Jaxon and Heath showed what great guys these two are and if you haven’t read their stories then hopefully this book will convince you to look at Matters of the Hart #3 and Matters to Me #4

This could be read as a standalone because the story was totally focused on this young couple but to understand all that has gone on especially with their mother, then I suggest you read her sister’s story first. Nicole and Kade are perfect for each other and give us a really sweet heartwarming story. After all she has been through it was nice to see her manage to control her anxiety, face up to the past and let herself enjoy Kade. As with previous books the author gives us an interesting epilogue to set the scene for the next book - Matter Of Fact #7, which is about Ellery and the mystery man she meets at Frui Vita.

Matter of Time is a slow burn romance filled with realistic characters and events that will tug at your heartstrings. M.E Carter ditched the alpha male main character, and instead gave us a sweet, gentle and loving hero that defies all the cliché stereotypes that we are used to reading about.

The nerdy girl inside of me was thrilled to read a love story that didn't have a hero who tried to be the toughest guy in the room. And on top of that, he was never said to be the most handsome guy in the room either. But this kind of love story is what we, as readers, should be wanting more of. The kind of story where the guy gets the girl because he earns her trust and treats her with respect, not because he's beautiful and has money.

But Matter of Time isn't just a simple love story. It tackles the deeper subject of coming out of an abusive relationship and learning to trust again. And M.E Carter does it in a way that feels authentic and genuine without dragging the story into a darker genre. So if you don't do great with heavy subject material, don't fret. I'd very much consider this book to still be on the lighter and sweeter side of the romance genre.

So overall I think this was a really good book with the perfect mix of heavy subjects, genuine characters, and slow burn romance. And while I'd recommend reading the other Hart books before reading this one, Matter of Time could also be read as a stand alone. So if you're looking for a refreshing take on love and romance, then this is the book for you.

Steam: 1/5 🔥

Book 6 in the #hartseries by @authormecarter didn’t disappoint.

This book hits on a tough subject of domestic violence. But it was written wonderfully.

Kade is the “brother” of Jaxon Hart. They might not be biologically brothers, but are family in all aspects of the word. Kade has never had a normal family. He feels like no one loves him and he doesn’t deserve any kind of it. But just being him, would make anyone fall for him. He just needs to see he’s worth it.

Nicole has not had an easy couple of years. After falling into an abusive relationship, things finally hit rock bottom. She calls on her sister for help and gets away. But trying to reintroduce herself to a normal way of life is hard. Especially when you’re surrounded by large men who could hurt you. Although they never would. They would only protect her. When her ex finds her, she sees how many people are really in her corner. But constantly being around Kade and how genuine of a guy he is, makes her feel safe and loved. Which is exactly what she needs.

This book is about love when it all comes down to it. Love of your family, friends and the people who care about you most. When your gut tells you that you’re safe and loved. It needs to be trusted.

Excited for the last book to come out this year!

Nicole and Kade are normal and sweet.  It's not often normal average people are the H/h of a romance book.  That's what I liked best, he's a gamer nerd who tends bar and goes part time to college but he's not sure what he wants to major in.  She's dealing with the load of crap after escaping an abusive relationship.  She's getting it together and entering back into her life with grace.

Nicole and Kade have a few things in common, crap parents, living a small life and a secret attraction to each other.  I enjoyed being in both of their heads and watching their slow burn love take hold.  Kade is a too good for his own good, but the forced proximity is really working for him.  I could relate to Kade's gamer buddies and their loud trash talk and while playing their team game, I have a gamer in my house.  Nicole has a wonderful community of support.  I like all these characters.  Normal is very attractive.

There are serious life issues that are handled beautifully.  I felt the anger, frustration and a bit of fear at the invasion of Nicole's privacy and safety.  I was very satisfied at the way her troubles were resolved.  Then there is a happy ending and those are very most favorite kind.

Having read Ms.Carter's work before I've been wanting to pick up more of her books. As soon as Is tumbled across a post about this book I knew it had be the next one of hers that I picked up next and oh how happy I am that I did! I devoured it in one sitting. I really enjoyed this story!

Nicole and Kade's journey had a realness and depth to it that had me hooked instantly! I couldn't turn away from these two and their story until I reached the end! Nicole's strength was inspiring and I wanted to hug her through my kindle. I related to Kade so much and he absolutely won my heart! I loved the fact that I connected with both of these characters and felt so much with them.

With Matter of Time, Ms.Carter has created such a fantastic and breath of fresh air read that shows us all what it means to overcome and to open your heart! This story and it's characters will stay with me for sure. I can't wait for the next book in The Hart Series, Matter of Fact! ❤️

WARNING This book contains references to domestic violence.

M. E. Carter is a master at handling triggering topics with both realism and sensitivity. After having written an awe-inspiring book dealing with the aftermath of sexual assault, she now shows us just how difficult it can be for a woman moving on from domestic abuse with a realism that shows just how difficult it can be, but with a sensitivity and optimism that is beautiful. I love that M. e. Carter can write a hero that isn't an alpha and has his own insecurities and strong heroines who help these heroes see themselves differently. Nicole and Kade are perfect for each other and their story is beautiful even if it is hard to read sometimes.

The Series continues with Matter of Time and we get Nicole and Kade’s story. At the end of the last book Nicole came to live with her sister and Paul because her ex boyfriend had beat her up and left her in the hospital. Nicole is trying to get back to herself and stop living in fear. Kade is watching Nicole from a far. Neither knows how the other feels until Jeremey comes to the bar and scares Nicole. She then moves in with Kade for her safety and their friendship and romance blossom. This is another great read in the series!

Kade and Nicole were so great together!

I enjoyed getting to know Kade and Nicole better after their cameos in other books in the series. They start as friends and roommates and their story is emotional and sweet. It was wonderful to see them fall in love after all Nicole had been through.

This is my favorite book I've read in the series. It was nicely paced and I liked getting to see other characters from the series as well. I am looking forward to reading more of M.E. Carter's books.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

Okay, where can I find me a Kade?! Seriously?! He's shy and to himself but is willing to give a helping hand when needed. And Nicole needs it. Coming off her own personal trauma, Nicole finds herself needed help. What she never expects herself to find is love.
They are Seriously perfect for each other.

I really enjoyed the latest book in The Hart Series. Kade and Nichole were relatable characters in this series. I could feel the struggle in Nichole and overcoming the abuse she suffered. I was glad to see she was getting overwhelming support from her family and the friends at the bar. I loved the bar crew, they all seemed fun and people I’d want to hang with. Kade was the cutest, and I loved reading a story about a person who didn’t have the picture perfect body but was deserving of love, even if he didn’t feel that way. It was also nice getting to see where some of the other characters were in their journey.

I won’t give anything away, but this was a great addition to the series!

Sweet Kade!

Love the uniqueness of this story & Nicole & Kade! He's not an 'alpha' but he is protective and kind. She's not a typical 'damsel in distress' but she does need protecting.

They fall in love with each other's hearts fairly quickly, but getting to the "I love you" stage is all sorts of slow burn goodness! They develop a friendship that's a lot of fun to read about, & gives the story a sense of lightness despite some heavy subject matter.

And the epilogue is great at building anticipation for the next couple in the series!!

I found this book to be a perfect balance of recovery and realization of worth. I was so happy to read Nicole's story and even happier to see the relationship with Nicole and Kade develop slowly and steadily. Kade may not be the typical Swoon Worthy hero (read as "yay!"), but his actions and care for Nicole sure made this reader catch the feels. A great addition to the Hart Series!

Another instant favorite

Once again, M.E. Carter has made me laugh and cry, swear and swoon. The real world issues combined with the sweetness of true love make for an amazing story, but these two characters were absolutely perfect for each other. I love their love!
