This collection of dark short stories is exactly what it says on the cover. Compiled by Spellbound, it contains contributions from 25 authors, some are well known names, and others not so familiar (to me anyway) but all are excellent stories of varying length and on a variety of themes – whether it be supernatural, domestic noir, zombie apocalypse or just good old fashioned murder, most have a sting in the tale. There were some contributions from names I recognised but whose books I wasn’t familiar with – a perfect introduction to seeking out more of their work.

Whether you want to read from end to end as I did, or just dip in and out, there is something here for every crime fan and with 100% of royalties being donated to NHS Charities, its a very worthwhile cause whilst being entertained. I’m not a regular reader of short stories but I really enjoyed this anthology.

A stellar cast of familiar (and some new to me) authors have penned a range of lockdown inspired tales. As an author myself, I find short stories the hardest to write and am always in awe of other authors skills in that department. This anthology was a delight to read. I found myself dipping into it at odd moments to get my fiction rush. The range of content is delightful from the uncanny to the straight forward thrill read and from the edgy and tense to the softer more cosy read.
This is the sort of read you can lose yourself in and although I don't read many short stories myself, I found myself rereading a couple of the most enchanting ones. I was introduced to authors i'd never read before and now my TBR pile is in danger of tottering over.

This anthology has something for everyone and just to tempt you even more, isn't it great that 100% of the royalties will go straight to NHS Charities.

Wow utterly thrilling and chilling. This brilliant collection of short stories will keep you up at night.I loved how each story weaves in the C word (the pandemic) into their story. I also loved how even during a pandemic murderous intentions can become deadly. I would highly recommend this collection, and you get to donate too.

I must admit that short stories aren’t really my thing but since all the proceeds from this particular collection are going to charity, I figured I’d do my bit in helping to spread the word.

This collection offers a wide range of variety in the crime genre. From the supernatural to cosy crime to murder and mystery, there is sure to be something for everyone. Contributing authors range from established names like Elly Griffiths and Sarah Hilary to the unknown debut authors who answered the call on social media. In short, this anthology has quite the healthy mix.

There are spooky shenanigans and slightly gruesome events. There is mention of the lockdown and the virus and heavier topics like domestic abuse. All these stories, short as they may be, pack quite the punch in their own special ways. The reason I don’t always enjoy short stories is because I feel that just when I’m beginning to sink my teeth into them, they’re over. But it also always manages to surprise me how much story an author can actually get across in so few pages.

Like any other anthology, this collection of short stories can be read front to back or dipped in and out off or you can just pick out your favourite authors and read their stories. There’s no overhanging arc, no particular order these stories should be read in. My personal favourites were written by Steve Mosby (delightfully dark), Sarah Hilary (probably the shortest one of the bunch but very memorable and also, it’s Sarah and she can do no wrong with me) and Nic Parker (actually rather disturbing and shocking but my warped sense of humour found it hilarious 😳). I discovered more than one new author whose work I’ll definitely be checking out, like Trevor Wood for instance. So not only do you get all these stories but you’re also introduced to a whole slew of new authors!

But more than anything, 100% of all royalties from The C Word will be donated to NHS Together Charities and if that isn’t a good enough reason to purchase this book, then I don’t know what is.

My review for ‘The C Word’ is going to be a little bit different to my usual as the review is about a collection of short stories written by some of my very favourite authors. The anthology was written during lockdown and 100% of royalties are to be donated to NHS Together Charities.
Now I have to admit that the last anthology I read, was the anthology for my GCSE English Literature exam and that is more years ago than I want to admit to. When I was invited to take part in the blog tour for ‘The C Word’, I thought that reading an anthology would be different to normal and that a change is as good as a rest. It wasn’t until I started reading the stories that I realised just how much fun reading short stories could be. I ended up becoming so wrapped up in the stories that I didn’t notice just how quickly the time was passing and just how quickly the pages were turning. All too quickly I reached the end of the book. I found ‘The C Word’ to be an interesting and gripping read, which kept me guessing and kept me on the edge of my seat.
The individual stories are superbly written. The reader is drawn into the stories from the very start and taken on one hell of an at times scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with many twists and turns along the way. I admit that when I started each story, I thought that I had an idea of what was going to happen and to whom but in the majority of cases I had the wrong end of the stick. I loved the fact that the authors wrote about subjects which weren’t always easy to read about but were and are topical to today.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The C Word’ and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to other readers. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.

I do love a good old crime story and with The C Word I got a whole host of good new crime stories from some of my favourite authors as well as some new to me writers too. With a mix like this, you really do get a little of everything and I think that everyone will find their favourite story amongst the selection.

What I enjoyed about this collection is that it doesn't just go down the traditional crime thriller route. There are some stories which move into the realm of the supernatural, an air of the spooky, or sometimes the down right quirky which really made me smile. From Steve Mosby's haunting and melancholic opening story God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters, Rob Scragg's surprising and tense The Witching Hour , or Paul Finch's slightly unusual story of a woman seeking acceptance, One of the Crowd, the book kept me completely hooked to the very last. You have stories of varying lengths and varying narrative tone, but it certainly offers quite a mixture to readers. Voodoo, zombie apocalypse and tales of family woe, it's a brilliant way to get a taster of all of the authors.

The beauty of a short story collection is that you can dip in and out of it at will, slipping a story in during your lunch break at work, or whilst waiting for the dinner to cook. Of course, if you do the latter, make sure you set a timer so that you don't burn it, as once you start on these stories, you might not want to stop. I have to say that stories which stuck with me were Linda Innes' Careful What You Wish For, which had echoes of one of my favourite novels, Jane Carrick's Night Terrors, Chloe Greene's Remnants and The Haunted Trolley by Nick Jackson, but quite probably because they all take a slight detour from your normal crime novel. But really the mixture of atmosphere, tension, humour and great storytelling means that any of the stories could make the top list, and looking back through the contents page triggers different memories and emotions.

A great collection, most certainly recommended, and with proceeds going to such a worthy cause, how can you resist?

Lockdown was tough. We all dealt with the first lockdown down in different ways but I don’t think anyone found it easy. But what The C Word brings to the table is the darkest and most twisted side of what could have happened behind closed doors last year.

This collection of subtly chilling stories is a collection and a half. A full-on mix of well known authors, lesser known authors (to me anyway) and then a few tales from unpublished writers but with a strong connection to the bookish world. Some stories dabble with a supernatural twist, others with a more realistic take on life in lockdown. A real mixed bag!!

Each story different from the last. The sort of book you can pick up and put down after a chapter without worrying about remembering what happened previously – perfect for when your reading mojo is AWOL or when the kids are demanding more of your time because of collapsed bubbles or indeed the upcoming summer break.

Many of these short stories have very sinister ending, designed to make you think and freak you out! But each one leaves you to your own imagination as to what could happen next.

From what I understand, short stories aren’t the easiest to write as you have to hit the ground running without much character development, no story development- kind of a snatch and grab kind of thing. This anthology definitely delivers with that. The stories pack a punch with a diverse range of scenarios! Brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks to @spellboundbks and @zooloosbooktours for my #gifted copy!

Today for #coffeeandcurrentlyreading (technically recently read) is The C Word, which is a compilation of short stories by various authors. The best thing is that 100% of all royalties from the book will be donated to NHS Together Charities

There are so many great authors that contributed to The C Word! A few that stick out are @ellygriffiths17 and @sophiehannahwriter. It was so much fun to read the different stories and since I don’t read many short stories, it was something new for me!

My favorite story was The Haunted Trolley by Nick Jackson. It had the perfect amount of creepiness, mystery, and surprisingly a happy ending. I really enjoyed the characters and their quest to solve the mystery behind the squeaky trolley! It also included the pandemic but in a very secondary way.

The wonderful thing about a short story compilation is you can read the stories in any order. If you don’t like one, just flip through to another. It’s also easy to read a decent chunk in a short amount of time.

I love that these authors came together during the pandemic and how they’re supporting healthcare workers and associated charities.

A great collection of short stories and certainly written for our times.

Some of these stories were a little too dark for my usual reading tastes, but as they were short I stuck with them. There could also be some subject triggers for some people. I pleasantly surprised on more than one occasion, with a subtle twist, what you think you might be reading about can change in an instant.

One of my favourite stories (although spooky) was set in a supermarket during the lockdown period of the covid pandemic. The understanding of the circumstances which the staff would have found themselves in was brilliantly done and made for a great setting for the story.

There is certainly a mix of styles and themes in this book, You never know exactly what is coming next. Definitely a book you can dip in and out of or as a break from your usual read.

I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. My thanks to Zooloo's booktours for the invite to the tour and and the ARC to review.

Remember 100% of all royalties from The C Word will be donated to NHS Together Charities.

I recently have read a couple of short stories which have shown me that the length of a story does not matter if the content is right. So I was eager to try this collection and see if I felt the same. And I did.

These stories are all great in their own unique way and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them.

You will find stories from some very well known authors and some from debut authors and those in between, but each one draws you in and holds you there till the end.

I found the writing styles, though different from story to story, very refreshing and I think I will definitely be dipping back in to reread these at different points.

This is a fab collection of short stories that you can dip into and read quickly just to fill the gap between larger books or as respite from your usual genres.

The C Word is available NOW and you will be supporting NHS Together Charities.

This is an anthology of various short stories, compiled by the co-owners of SpellBound books during the Covid pandemic.
Some of the authors are known and established, others are new.
Which is which is not obvious when reading the book. The stories are a wide variety of crime, humourous, some with gangland elements or cosy mystery.
Personally Night Terrors and The Tennis Church stood out for me. Night Terrors was all of our worst nightmares so cleverly written, if I heard heaving breathing and what sounded like someone coming up the stairs, I think I would have a heart attack! I am not counting how many stairs there are either, I dont want to know!!
I loved the reasoning behind the Tennis Church name in the story.
Due to being an anthology, this is a book you can dip in and out of. I didnt, I somehow found that before I knew it, I had finished! I hope this wont be the last book of this kind by this indomitable duo.
The most important thing of all:
100% of the royalties from this book will be donated to the NHS together charity. So what are you waiting for?

Here we have a smashing mixture of short stories ranging from the supernatural, domestic noir and cosy crime to traditional murder and mystery, all generously donated by a host of both new and established authors. You’ll find haunted supermarkets, voodoo spells, horrible husbands, book clubs and twisted stalkers and killers. Something for everyone, in fact, whether you want a story of sweet revenge or to be scared off your seat! Some stories have a definite ending, while others are thought-provoking and leave the reader to make up their own mind A couple even feel like they could be the first chapter in a thrilling full length novel. My favourites, I think, were The Haunted Trolley by Nick Jackson, To Catch A Killer by Matt Hickman, Out Of Lockdown by David Field and The Tanzanite Ring by Mark Wilson.
Well done to all involved in helping to make this a great collection. 5*

The C Word is a fantastic anthology which is a mix of crime, mystery, thriller with a couple of supernatural/dystopian themed short stories in there too. There's also a mix of authors too, from household names to some I've never heard of to some who were previously unpublished.

I always love these types of collections, the fact I can dip in and out when I feel like and discover new authors at the same time.

Another thing I love about an anthology like this is seeing what each other comes up with based on the same theme, it always amazes me how unique each story is.

The collection doesn't pull any punches and highlights some serious issues that happened during lockdown in particular domestic violence.

The C Word is a dazzling collection of stories that will entertain, enthrall and take you on an emotional journey too.

With a wide variety of stories to delight, scare and thrill, and there’s something here for everyone in The C Word : For some lockdown has been murder. I did have a few favourites of my own, but as this is a collection, anyone who reads this great book will have their own favourites. Some of the contributing authors such as Sophie Hannah, Rob Scragg and Paul Finch I have previously read while others, Matt Hickman, Elly Griffiths and Steve Mosby to name just a few, it was the first time I’d read their work but will definitely look for more by them.
The great thing about this book is that it introduces you to many wonderful writers but the best reason for buying this book is...

I’ve been really into anthologies in 2021, so when The C Word was available to review, I had to take the opportunity.

This is a wonderful mix of crime, mystery, thriller, and even a little supernatural. With a vast array of authors and themes, this anthology has something for everyone.

Each story is so different and complex compared to the next, that it’s hard to choose favorites here. What I can say is, this is a talented group of authors who are able to do so much in a short story. It is so impressive to me how much can be accomplished in such a short amount of words.

I loved this anthology and highly recommend giving it a read.

Thank you to Zooloo’s Book Tours for the review copy and opportunity to honestly review on the blog tour. All opinions are my own and unbiased.

The C Word is a collection of short stories by various authors, & I’ve only read a few of them before. So, not only is this book a good way of discovering new authors to read , it is also a fantastic means of raising money for good causes as 100% of all royalties will be donated to NHS Together Charities.

There is something here for everyone, although all the stories have a crime related theme in some way. Horror, mystery, supernatural, thriller & gruesome - they’re all here in some fashion. Of course I have my favourites & they changed when I read it a second time!
A fab anthology; well & truly recommended.

This book is an anthology of short stories by various authors that SpellBound put together during lockdown.

These are stories of murder, mystery, death and destruction. Each story was written well and as they were short, it was easy to put the book down and pick up again at any point.

My favourite story was The Haunted Trolley, it also brought a tear to my eye.

100% of the Royalties will go to the NHS Together Charities.

With stories from Rob Scragg, Elly Griffith, Andy Hill, Paul Finch and others, this is well worth the read.

The C Word is a collection of 26 short stories published by SpellBound Books to raise money for NHS Together Charities. While there’s an over-arching crime/supernatural theme, the stories differ in length, style and genre. As with all good short stories, for a few pages you’re transported to a different world and get to know all sorts of characters, good, bad and ugly, very quickly!

While the title refers to COVID-19 and lockdown, only a few of the stories refer to them, and some more directly than others. That’s a good thing, as it gives the collection a lot of variety - I’m not sure how much there would be if everyone had the brief to set their stories in lockdown, and it broadens the appeal of the book to readers who prefer escapism. There really is something for everyone here.

All of the stories have merit, but my personal favourites were the deliciously creepy ‘Be Careful What You Wish For’ by Linda Innes and ‘Curse of Cassia’ by Vanessa Morgan, the heartwarmingly supernatural ‘The Haunted Trolley’ by Nick Jackson and ‘Zoom’ by Elly Griffiths, and the brilliantly twisty ‘Strength’ by Andy Hill and ‘Mrs Miller’s Muffins’ by Nic Parker. These and other outstanding stories from the anthology will stick with me for a while.

The C Word is a wonderfully eclectic collection of short stories, published for a good cause.

The C Word is a collection of short stories by various authors most of which I will have to admit I have never read before. In one respect this is good as now I have a whole host of potential reads to add to my TBR pile and the flip side of that is I now have a whole host of potential reads to add to my TBR pile.
This is certainly a book that will appeal to a wide variety of people as you get to sample different styles and slightly different takes on the crime genre. My favourite story was The Haunted Trolley by Nick Jackson as there was just something about it that stuck with me. I also enjoyed Remnants by Chloe Green for a totally different reason. It appealed to my sense of the gruesome. In real life I don’t like the truly horrific things and I won’t watch a scary movie but give me a book that has me going ewwww whilst also making me smile and I am all over it. This short story certainly had me doing that in spades.
The added bonus to this book is that it is raising money for charity, so if you want to discover your next favourite author by sampling some of their work and support a good cause at the same time then I can happily recommend the C Word.
