A Snitch in the Snob Squad is the third and final title in the Snob Squad series by Julie Anne Peters. As I talked about in my previous reviews, I really liked the first book, Revenge of the Snob Squad, but I was less crazy about book two, Romance of the Snob Squad. This third book, however, turned out to be my favorite of the trilogy. (I only read the original version, so I don't know what's changed in the revised edition. I did notice that Amazon recommends the original for ages 9-12, but classifies the new one as YA.)

A Snitch in the Snob Squad is actually not the best title for this book, because it's less about being a snitch and more about figuring out who's committing larceny in the classrooms of Montrose Middle School. Money has gone missing from two teachers' desks, and the Snob Squad - Prairie, Lydia, Max, and Jenny have a number of suspects. Was it Max, who was blamed for it, and suspended, and then ran away from home? Was it Kevin Rooney, Jenny's sort of-boyfriend, who suddenly has the money to buy her expensive jewelry? Or was it Ashley Krupps, the principal's daughter, who is constantly making trouble for the Squad and could easily have tried to frame Max? While all of these questions float through the school hallways, Jenny also starts writing the food diary she avoided in the first two books, and her family continues its struggle to work out conflicts and save her parents' marriage.

The characters were much less cartoonish in this book than the previous one, and the mystery plot was really strong, and kept me guessing right up until the culprit finally confessed. Jenny's voice was also less annoying, and her jokes less cheesy, and more intelligent. I didn't necessarily feel like the entire series was resolved at the end of this book, but Jenny's story, at least, came to a satisfying end, and despite the dark humor of the book, the ending did have a positive ring to it. This book doesn't stand on its own, really, as the characters are not described or introduced in any way, and events from the previous books do figure heavily into the plot, but for anyone who's read the first two books, this conclusion will not disappoint.

In this book in the series there is the ususal concern from the girls about problems with weight, boyfriends and Ashley Krupps, but something serious happens when money is stolen from one teacher and then another robbery occurs shortly after that.

Max is suspended after the first robbery, but the second occurs while she is on suspension. Unfortunately, she shows up at school that day, though, and Jenny wonders if Max might possibly have taken the money. Or perhaps Kevin, her would-be boyfriend who starts giving her what she believes are expensive presents.

Then there's a problem with Jenny's father reading her personal food diary, leaving Jenny feeling betrayed and her privacy violated.

It's quite interesting to see how people jump to conclusions and also how quickly some people will forgive others when they "come clean" about something they have done. All told, it's an interesting and good story.
