We love that these books provide the common girl and boy names. That's been a really wonderful way to broaden our knowledge of cultures.

If You Were Me and Lived in… Portugal is one of the latest books in the If You Were Me and Lived In… educational picture book series by Carole P. Roman. We received this book during the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament; so, it was very timely in terms of educating my children about various countries from around the world that they may not have encountered before but which figured prominently in the tournament. We were amused to see that a tiny Portuguese flag came with the book, so the kids enjoyed waving it in support of the Portuguese soccer team. Interestingly, Ronaldo even makes a cameo appearance in the book!

Similar to the other books in the series, If You Were Me and Lived in… Portugalintroduces the reader to the foods (e.g., arroz do arisco, francesinha), currency (euros), geography (e.g., Iberian peninsula, Azores), history, and other cultural aspects of Portugal (e.g., Carnevale, barcelos). As with Carole Roman’s other books in the series (e.g., South Korea, Mexico, etc.), I must admit that there were tidbits of information even I did not know. While there is quite a bit of information, it is well-presented and is not overly-complicated.

Sprinkled throughout the text are phrases in Portuguese which are then translated in the back of the book in a “Pronunciation” section. It was very helpful to have a pronunciation guide as even I could not decipher some of the words. My only issue with the Portuguese phrases is that I would have liked to have seen the English translations on the page itself rather than having to check the back. But, on the other hand, children may also enjoy trying to guess what is being said.

The illustrations are detailed and kid-friendly and I really loved how photographs were used in conjunction with caricatures. For example, the beauty of the Azores can only be captured through photography and they would not be nearly as impressive if the landscapes had been drawn. Interestingly, the author choose to have white text over a black/dark background. I did feel that this darkened the book slightly and would have preferred a variation of the reverse (black text on white background or at least the use of brighter colors). Overall though, the physical book is eye-catching and I’m sure children will enjoy flipping through the pages.

My Bottom Line:

If You Were Me and Lived in … Portugal is another educational book centred around the exploration of various aspects of the Portuguese culture from the perspective of a child. The book is full of interesting tidbits about Portuguese food, language, geography, celebrations, and much more. I highly recommend this non-fiction series to parents, grandparents, librarians, and teachers who wish to introduce cultural diversity to children aged 3 years and older.

I was sent some more books in the If You Were Me and Lived In…. series which as great books for introducing countries and their cultures to children – I was given Australia, Russia and Portugal this time and you can read the reviews of India and Turkey as well as Mexico, France, South Korea and Norway here on my blog as well. While these are geared towards children ages 3 to 8 years, they can actually be well suited to older children as well who may need a little push to become interested in geography and cultures. The books are short but big on information that concerns each country such as names for moms and dads, popular children’s names, foods, games and even popular sites to visit. A globe in the beginning shows your child where exactly the country is located on it’s continent as well as the shape of the country – which is great if you like to do mapping or just want to help your child’s geography skills. My only issue comes in the book about Australia – which mentions “People native to Australia have lived on this large island for over forty-thousand years” (page 20), since we believe in Creation Science and the Biblical account of Creation this isn’t something that we’d read, so I chose to skip it but wanted to let my readers know about this.

Overall, I’ve enjoyed this series, they are great books for when I need a break from ‘real’ school books but don’t want to not to do any learning and they are engaging with their cute and colorful illustrations depicting each country’s culture. In the back is a glossary of all the words used that are not English, including a pronunciation guide and a definition – the pronunciation guide is also included in the story as it’s read to help with the flow of reading the facts. I do highly recommend these books to anyone who wants to introduce geography and cultures to their young children or wants to spur an interest in it in an older child – they are inexpensive and some are available in e-book format as well for ease of taking on trips or outside the home. I also think most homeschool families would enjoy these additions to their home libraries for their own repeated and frequent use – it would also be easy to use these as a springboard to making your own unit studies.

About the Book:

Award winning and best selling author Carole P. Roman travels to beautiful Portugal. This pro active book invites children to think about Portugal's many wonders from the sunny Azores to the wide variety of food. Roman's If You Were Me books have a simple, winning formula: portray children from other countries and explain how familiar items and customs are the same, and how they differ, in the country being discussed...

About the Author:

Award winning author Carole P. Roman is a former teacher turned businesswoman. She has successfully run a family business with her husband that employs close to five hundred people. Her most favorite job is being grandmother to her many grandchildren. Roman has two wonderful sons and hit the jackpot in the daughter-in-law department. She currently lives on Long Island with her husband.

My Review:

Learning about life in Portugal is fun because of the If You Were Me and Lived In series, written by Carole P Roman. She takes a few facts from a foreign land and can turn them into a book geared for elementary aged children. This will educate them on Portugal in a FUN way!

Portugal turns out to be located on the Iberian Peninsula in Europe. The names of some of the children there that are quite common are Tomas and Maria. The common currency used there is euros. A favorite vacation spot is the Azores, which is a chain of 9 volcanic islands that add to the beauty of the landscape there. You can go on mountain trails, dive & swim with the ocean life.

Many of the aromatic dishes there include fish, probably because it is in abundance there. The favorite recreational sport there is futeball which is a form of soccer to us living in the states. So as you can see there is still many things to learn about this scenic land.

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.

@ Nandhini's Book Reviews

The book takes children for a quick tour to Portugal. As you can see, the book cover shows where exactly Portugal is in the world map. Another map on the first page gives a geographic outline of the country with its capital city, just for kids to identify; not a detailed one. And then a little about the country’s history; a little about the origin – all just a little for little children!

Each page talks about something unique about the country – popular vacation spot, favourite cuisines, festivals, country symbol, sports – again, all just a little for little children. Small words in Portugese language are included at appropriate places with a pronounciation guide. This is something children would enjoy learning. My favourite is “Amo-te paizinho” (a-mo-te pa-iz-nho). Guess what it means?
The book design is laudable. Huge font used makes the reading attractive. Of course, colourful pictures accompany every page. Pictures of two little children (a brother and a sister) will take you round the book. A pronounciation guide page and blank pages for activities are at the end of the book.

Personally, I like to turn the pages over and over again and recite the Portugese phrases loudly. I know, I am not a kid, but, honestly I like the book as much as my toddler son does. Certainly, learning about the country this way was fun; more than browsing through wikipedia and web pages. I admire and appreciate this idea of the author to write for children about the cultures of the world. Children, indeed, should learn them in their growing-up years.

Other books in the series introduce Russia, Mexico, India, France, Norway, South Korea, Kenya, Turkey and Australia. I wish to read all of them soon!

REVIEW

I have read and reviewed quite a few of Ms. Roman's books. She not only sends the wonderful little books but there sometimes there is a flag, a coin, a pencil and other items that she sends also. Children love these kind of things. When I finish reading and reviewing the books, I send them to my sister's grandson. He is just at that right age to learn about these wonderful places and their cultures. Ms. Roman always has an educational lesson to the books. The lesson however, is a fun part of the book, not boring, but fun and interesting. The reader learns about the different countries and their language, their customs, food dishes, important places in their country and much more. Ms. Roman presents these countries with fun and adds the educational part in with colorful pictures in a way that doesn't take away from the interest of the child. Children's attention span tends to wear out quickly. The author also takes into consideration some of the questions that children may have about the countries. She gives answers that are easy for the child to understand. These books are not just for children. Grown up can learn a lot from them also. These books are wonderful little books that children and adults can learn about different countries and their cultures. They would be a great collection to keep on the shelf to read again and if you need a fact about a country, check out these books. The answer may be right there.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, Carole P. Roman for my view of the book. No other compensation took place.

The modern child will face an environment where every populated location in the world will contain items of interest and people that are competing with them for jobs and resources. There are some that believe the solution is to become insular, adopting the position that the best thing to do is adopting an attitude of superiority over others and keeping them out. A fundamental component of this tactic is to avoid teaching young students about other people, cultures and languages.
This is a disastrous approach guaranteed to fail for those people that compete with you are part of a global market that you can sell to. Children need to be exposed to the lives of people in other countries, know that they exist and learn some of the similarities as well as differences.
Carole P. Roman has written another outstanding book for early learners, this time her focus is on the children of Portugal. The reader will learn a small set of Portuguese words for common concepts such as father and mother and popular names for Portuguese children. They will also get a glimpse into the geography of the country, cuisine and the most popular holidays. Every other page contains an illustration with subdued colors and a basic theme.
There are many tools that can be used in the essential multicultural education of the modern child and this is one of the best for the early years. Roman has once again created a jewel of a book that all parents should consider purchasing for their child.

This book was made available for free for review purposes and this review was posted on Amazon.

I grouped my reviews all together for these, they are fantastic books :).

These books are so fantastic for kids. I really wish my kids were still little, but I read them to my 10 yr old and he really enjoyed them as well. Each book tells you about where you can find each place. It tells about what kind of food they eat, what sports they like. It is fun to see the similarities in so many different cultures. AND the differences. What a great idea to write these books. Each book tells about an important day to each place, and what they would use for money. It's very insightful, for a children's book.

The illustrations are wonderful in the books. They are a quick and easy way to share with your children the difference and beauty of each culture in our world. Such a beautiful display of culture.

I enjoyed each book. They each had fun facts, and were interesting to read. If you have kids with friends from other countries this would be a fabulous way to introduce them to their culture. For me, I just wanted my son to see all the amazing people, and cultures that there are in our fabulous world. Each one is beautiful, and wonderful. I love this world we live in, and all the different people and cultures that add to that beauty.

Such a great idea!

Thanks to Carole P. Roman for your insight on each of these wonderful parts of our world.

Source: I was given these books by the author in return for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way for this review. These are my own PERSONAL thoughts on the books.

Award-winning Carole P Roman's series If You Were Me and Lived in...is a wonderful way to introduce children, ages pre-K to 8 years, to cultures of people around the world. Portugal, beautifully illustrated by Kelsea Wierenga and simply written, is sure to capture a child's interest and imagination. A pronunciation guide at the back and embedded within the book enables children to learn simple words and names of places in Portugal. From shopping with Avo (grandmother) to vacationing in the Azores, from eating bacalhaua, salted cod, or grilled sardines to playing soccer, kids will learn about Portuguese traditions, foods, and geography. It is well known that books can take an armchair reader (or one sitting on a lap) anywhere and Roman does a fantastic job of taking her readers to Portugal, a place of beauty and age-old customs. Highly recommended for a child's library.

If You Were Me and Lived in…Portugal – an Introduction to Learning About Other Cultures by Carole P. Roman is another in this educational series for children Pre-K to age eight. This series teaches children about their peers around the world. It answers questions that children would ask. What do you play with? What do you like to eat? What do you call your parents? Where would you go for fun? What kind of holidays do you celebrate?

The illustrations are bright and colorful and portray the story well. There is a two-page pronunciation guide in the back of the book for words and phrases.

What fun this would be for preschools or early grades for learning about the world! I can see it being used in a classroom setting with children dressing up, learning about a specific country, and then giving a presentation to the class using the words learned in the book.

We received this book to give an honest review.

We love reading about new countries. And Portugal was an interesting country to read about. We learn what people eat, what type of currency they use to buy things. What you would call your mother and father and so much more. These books "If you were me and lived in..." are great to not only have in home but to have in the classrooms as well. Now some words were hard to pronounce so thank goodness that there was a pronunciation guide in the back to help us out. It was a bit funny to hear K sound out some of the words that they say in Portugal.
If you want to learn about this country from a child's point of view of if you were them and lived there than this is a good book to read.

Carole has this terrific series of books for children - If You Were Me and Lived in.... I have all of them and they are a phenomenal way to introduce children of all ages to different cultures, in a way that captivates their interest. These books have just enough interesting information to entertain children but not so much that they will shy away thinking it is too much work. I call it their accidental learning. If you have not read any of these books with your children you should consider it. They are awesome and entertaining. They teach children about the diversity in the world and how we are all people with different beliefs and ways of life - but still all the same.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have a friend of mine from Portugal and when I showed this book to her daughter, the little girl loved it.

"Is this where we're from?" She asked her mom with wide eyes.

"Yes, darling, that is part of our heritage."

My friend read it to her daughter that night (and many nights afterwards). She thanked me for the book and told me it reminded her of home.

Carole P Roman takes on a trip across the world to the beautiful country of Portugal. Filled with fun facts ranging from historical to sports (they say Ping Pong was invented in Portugal), this book will teach children what life is like on the Iberian Peninsula.

Take it from me, even the native Portuguese gives it a five star!

My Rating: 5 stars

It's off to sunny and lively Portugal! Perhaps we will be in time for Carnevale. We can enjoy food, music, parades and dancing. What fun! Portugal is an old country and there are many things to see and learn there. Are you excited? I am.

Ms. Roman taps into the most fun and most interesting things about each country. I know the child in your life will enjoy this series as much as I do. Easy to read, bright lovely illustrations and such fun. Get this series.

I found no issues.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it made me want to visit Portugal.

This is another fantastic book in the series "If You Were Me and Lived in......" by Carole P. Roman!

These are really a must have in any child's library. Children of all ages will love these books. So will parents!

As in all of these books, there is a pronunciation guide in the back of the book. If you lived in Portugal and wanted to say "Hey Mom", you would say, "Ola, Mae". And your Dad would be "Pai".

These are a great addition to your child's library, school library, and as a gift.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of the book for my review.

7th book in this great series

The first book in this series that I read was "If you were me and lived in... South Korea" and it got me excited about reading the whole series. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading all the books in this series to my twin grandchildren.

There is a bit of history, a bit of everyday life, geography and a nifty lengthy pronunciation guide at the end of the book so that you can learn some Portuguese.

The illustrations are colorful and informative.

This is a great series to introduce younger children to different cultures around the world.

This is a continuing series of the people and places of the world for children filled with interesting facts about the country of Portugal. Written for children it lists facts about the country and words in Portuguese for the children to learn. Some questions were asked of the reader to answer by using the pronunciation table in the back of the book, I found it a good way to make the reader more active in the story.
A wonderful series for children to learn about the world around them.

This is a book that follows along I the same way the author’s other books do. In Portugal you learn the capital, what your parents are called, popular boy and girl names. The author always talks about where you would go on vacations and what you would see. My favorite part is learning about some of the foods you would eat. These are great books for getting children interested in learning about other countries.

Off to Portugal we continue the educational journey. She teaches children exactly what countries surround Portugal, traditional food, traditional names, and some of the language. This is another series that really belongs in libraries not only as a simple read, but for research purposes for young children. It provides to them a multitude of information about different countries that they can take back to the classroom to share with their classmates. 5 fangs.

I read this series of books with my kids and we loved them! They had fun learning about the culture of each country, from what they eat, special celebrations, and translations to common words from each. I would recommend these books to anyone with kids, especially ones interested in geography. It's a great start for piquing their interest.

I received this series from the author through a giveaway. All opinions came from me :)

Storyline

Ok I like to talk about the storyline first. The storyline is just like the rest of the books in the series. The synopsis above gives a pretty good description on what the book is about and what it contains. Even though the book is short you do feel like you have learned a lot in the few pages that you have read.

Education

For the education, you do learn quite a bit, though the "facts" for this book or better yet for this series, are facts that are simple and easy for children to remember which I love. My little cousins have learned what people would eat in Portugal and what they would call their mommies and daddies and what popular tourists spots they would go to see. So my cousins aren't overwhelmed by a lot of information and they get to learn new things that they are interested in.

Pictures

For the pictures I have to say that they were good. None of the characters blended into the backgrounds and my nephew liked looking through the pictures. There wasn't anything that amazed us but it did keep the attention of the little ones in my family.

Binding

Note: I am just re-writing what I wrote in the past posts for this series as they all have the same binding.

The binding is similar to the rest of the books. The cover is whitish so I have to make sure the kids won't take markers to it and the binding is on the flimsy side but in the end the book is thin so it won’t take up to much space on the bookshelf which is a good thing for us. So there are pros and cons for this department.

In learning of Turkey, you first learn that it has the second largest city in the world - Istanbul; and it straddles two continents - Asia and Europe. Turkey is very old. In the year 390 the Hagia Sophia was built as a church by the emperor Justinian and over 1,000 years later it was changed into a mosque by the Ottoman sultan Mehmet II.

As in any country, folks like to eat and Turkey has food specific to that country. And you also like to shop in the market or play soccer or with your doll which is called a bebek.

Next, the author introduces you to the names you would call your parents and in the back of the book there is a list of words in the Turkish language and their punctuation.

Turkey celebrates with Children's Day which is a very special.

I loved the If you were me and lived in series of books by Carole P. Roman. The 9th book of the series is If you were me and lived in Portugal. The colors used in the illustrations are realistic colors and show off the pictures well. Occasionally the print is over a picture or on a dark colored page, but the print is a good size and reads very clearly. This book, as well as the whole series, is enjoyable and educational at the same time. The book even has a glossary with a pronunciation guide in the back.
Home school parents would love these for their lesson plans, but even more, I can see children reading these with interest without much pressure because they make learning about it's specific country entertaining.

Portugal is one of the oldest cities in the world, it is the oldest in Western Europe. In Portugal the money is euros. If you visited you may want to see The Azores, which is a chain of nine volcanic islands. There are marine animals and sea birds too. Bacalhau, grilled sardines and pastelisde nata are just a few of the tasty foods found in Portugal. The Portugal Carnevale starts in February and people dress in costumes which could take months to prepare.

Young readers, parent and teachers will love this series that shares cultures from around the world. Readers who are curious about Portugal will learn about its celebrations, history, food and family. The book also includes a play passport, flag and a pencil. The back of the book has a guide that will help readers with pronunciation.
