The Penguin, a Watch Me Grow book series, is a great informational text that educates readers about the life cycle of the Emperor Penguin. This book starts off with background information of where Emperor Penguins live and look like. After talking about the mom and dad penguin, the book then talks about the life cycle of the egg hatching up until the baby penguin is grown enough to have its first fishing lesson. The last page also provided facts of different penguins from around the world. Moreover, the book includes several text features such as diagrams, sidebars, captions, and a glossary to provide supplemental information. The book is also filled with detailed photographs of the Emperor Penguin in their natural setting.

After reading this book, I would definitely use it for a K-2 classroom. The book was easy to follow as it portrayed the life cycle of the emperor penguin from before it hatched, up till the baby penguin was old enough to hunt and become an adult penguin. I would use this text as a Read Aloud during the unit of Structures and Functions of Living Organisms, in 2nd grade. (2.L.1 - Understand Animal Life Cycles). During this unit, we can talk about the process of birth, growth, reproduction, as well as the process of how the parents take care of their child. I can also use other books in the Watch Me Grow series to compare and contrast other animals and their life cycles. I can also use this book to point out the text features that can be seen in informational texts (CCSS.ELA.RI.2.4 - Know and use various text features to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently). To help students utilize text features, I would create a station during my literacy block, where students would work on a handout with open ended questions. They would use the text features from the Penguin book, to help answer questions that focus on their comprehension.

I loved this book, it is very well put-together for young kids to read and be able to learn about penguins. The pictures are fantastic and the coloring is very good. the text is nice and big so it is easy to read, and the word choice is on a low level so younger kids will be able to understand the terms. There is also a helpful glossary in the back of the book to define different terms that relate to penguins.

I would recommend this book to any young child who is looking for an introduction into the world of penguins.
