Look! is a dynamic, beautifully illustrated guide to teaching young people how to look at art. Acclaimed art educator Gillian Wolfe selected 18 paintings from around the world and across art history to help develop the art of "seeing" a painting from all perspectives--the most important skill in learning about art. Brilliant color reproductions and engaging instructions guide us to actively think about what we see when we look at
· Are we looking UP at flying trapeze artists or DOWN at clowns in the circus ring?
· What's happening THROUGH the archway in the background or BEHIND a posed group of children where a cat is staring at a pet bird?
· What happens when you turn a picture upside down?
· How does the artist make a picture look like the characters in it are moving quickly?
· How can you tell if a train interior is old-fashioned?
· What are the clues that a family at the dinner table is in the country? Written especially for children but with a light-hearted approach that will delight adults as well, Look! is an ingenious approach to teaching children to enjoy art.
In this fun and accessible book, children are encouraged to look at paintings in a whole variety of ways. Each spread focuses on a different perspective with 14 perspectives in all. A simple text describes each painting, and children are encouraged to answer questions about the images.
I loved using this book with my Y5/6 class in art lessons. It's an unusual way to interact with famous art work and look at it from different perspectives. There are little pieces of advice about how to look and what to look for. I particularly love the Bruegel picture (but then I am biased).
