Helen Stephens is the illustrator of a number of books for children. She is best known for her How to Hide a Lion series, which was adapted for the stage by the Polka Theatre. She has illustrated stories for some of her favorite authors, including Roger McGough, Michael Morpurgo, Sophie Hannah, Holly Webb, and Cecile Aubry. Helen Stephens lives on the windy coast of Northumberland, England, with her family.
"No matter where the lion hid, behind the whiteboard, inside the piano, Miss Holland always found him."
This is the kind of book that you buy not because it teaches a good morale or smart science for kids, but simply because it is fun, imaginative, funny.
The lion doesn't want to be apart from Iris the little girl friend when she is at school, so he sneaks and hide everywhere. But he is always caught. One day the school kids go on a field trip to a museum, and the lion also tries to sneak in there! He gets caught and shooed out of the museum, but finally becomes a hero who saves all the kids when a tree falls down and stops the school bus from going any further back to school.
Isn't that a fun story? My daughter had fun pointing out where the lion hides on every page 😄
This is the sequel to the first book, "How to Hide a Lion", and there is another book in the series called "How to Hide a Lion from Grandma". Not in the series but by the same author is "Gracie Grabbit and the Tiger."
My 4 year old enjoyed this one, the fourth we've read in the series, as it has lots of images of the lion hiding in silly places around the museum. Cute illustrations like all the stories in this series, but didn't leave as much of an impression as the original or the Christmas story, but maybe I'm just less enthusiastic about this one because I had to actually buy it as they didn't have it in our library. But a silly sweet story of lion hijinks and a change of heart once the lion saves the day yet again.
The further adventures of Iris and her extremely loveable lion. Iris is off on a school trip to the museum, and of course her lion is not allowed to come. But of course, he accidentally does, and so he needs to hide so that he doesn't scare off the museum patrons. As usual, the lion ends up saving the day and all ends happily. A lovely, warm-hearted series, lots of fun to read.
3,5 Króciutki tekst - w sam raz dla najmłodszych dzieci, w którym śledzimy przygody Malwinki i Jej przyjaciela lwa.
The short answer is you don't hide a lion! Iris is so cool to have a whole lion to herself. He clearly loves her and doesn't want to be apart, but understandably her teacher says no to it attending class with her. I love how inventive he gets in hiding at the museum-I imagined spy music playing in the scene when he was outside the museum, sneaking closer to the entrance as the children went in. Iris is equally clever in her genius way of making sure her teacher definitely didn't see him, which would have worked if the lion wasn't so kind and helped out someone using his disguise.
I felt so sorry for him and Iris when he got sent away, but thankfully he saved the day! I like what happened in order for him to save the day, because it gently introduces younger readers occasional dangers on the road which could happen to them but usually has a happy ending, unfortunately not with a lion! It must have been a ginormous lion to do what it did at the end, as Iris has a lot of classmates. I haven't read any of Helen's books before but this is a definite reread!
