After a superb job of pulp writing in Genetic Buccaneer, Kern (E.C.Tubb) sends our hero Cap Kennedy and his chums off to save another planet. Never mind that the universe seems to be almost seething with planets requiring to be saved (The universe is infinite after all) Kern's man will be in there saving.
A gritty start with Cap being forced to kill a fellow agent leads to a fairly complex plot. At one point Kern baffles the reader (and possibly himself) with strings of mathematical figures related to vectors curves and anodynes and all sorts incomprehensible stuff but as always he does it with polish and style. Once Kern has the pacing sorted for this 120 page format he's the man.
This book falls in the middle of the books I've read in the series; not the worst nor the best.
Cap and his team are concerned with a stolen artifact on a world led by a power-mad, paranoid albino woman. In trying to activate it, her people have unleashed an uncontrollable radiation-induced flame slowly devouring the planet. And is too stubborn to ask for help, only to control the flame to increase her power.
I liked it. I thought the ending was weaker than the average Cap Kennedy book but it was a quick read. I read almost all of it while my wife was having chemo.
