Hello. My name is Ryan Shattuck. I am an author, columnist, freelance writer, and political satirist. I've also managed social media for various projects and organizations, including the 2012 Libertarian Presidential campaign.
I am based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Please don't hold that against me.
If I didn't know the author personally, I don't know if I would have finished this book.
Since I know Ryan, I know that he's hilarious. This book, however, doesn't showcase that well. The humor was often just "off" to me. Why is it funny, for instance, to say, "These things are listed in no particular order. Other than alphabetical."? I just didn't get it. And while saying, "The following 3 things..." and then listing 4 things is SORT OF funny, it's also sort of not funny.
I did, however, chuckle at least every few pages. And some moments were thoroughly and genuinely funny! For instance, his Family Tree of Revolutions, random jokes deposited throughout the book, the forward by Kristen Hintz (loved it!), and the chapter title of "Chapter 4: Becoming a Nonconforming, Independent, Anarchist Revolutionary: The Rules and Regulations." I giggle just thinking about that chapter title.
A major complaint I have is something I almost can't complain about, because in the first pages, before the book even starts its content, there's "A Warning About This Book" that says, in essence, "This book is offensive. Just so you know." And while I expected the book to be crass, I didn't expect it to be disrespectfully crass (yes, there's a difference). For instance, I didn't appreciate AT ALL the imagery of Ghandi with a machine gun. That's wrong on so many levels.
... Having said all that, I would still read Ryan's next book. Ryan is funny and he's a good writer, and I know his best work is yet to come. I'll be there when it hits the market.
The first thing that really drew me in was the amazing cover; and then I found out the book was funny too! This book makes me laugh each time I read it; and I feel more informed and smarter. A must read in the genre of satire and all things great.
This was a very interesting concept for a book. Very funny and quick read. I really enjoyed it. I look forward to more from Ryan Shattuck. His creative and sharp writing style leads me to believe this will not be the his last.
