Preferring to avoid confrontations when possible, sea cucumbers' unique collagenous tissues enable them to liquefy their entire body, allow them to escape into small crevices where predators can't follow, and quickly stiffen their body so they can't be extraced. If they are captured, some species, like the black sea cucumber (Holothuria forskali) can discharge sticky and toxic threads known as Cuvierian tubules from their anuses that can ensnare any would-be predator and potentially be fatal to some marine life.
