On its cover, this book claims to be "The breakthrough program for conquering anxiety, overcoming negative thoughts, and discovering your true potential".

Well, that sounds promising. I am a big believer in the power of our thoughts, although it's a constant struggle for me (hey, Eeyore isn't my favorite Disney character for nothing!). I was anxious to see what this book would hold.

First, a side story (it'll tie in, I promise): a few years ago, one of my girls' teachers shared this at a conference and I found helpful. She said that when facing challenges, we should think of ourselves not as victims, but as the hero of our story. I've done this a lot, and it is transformational.

So, I loved when this book said early on, "A correctly thinking mind uses its worst days as a story line ... to write the most important chapters of its life project." Hey - I've been doing that, and I agree!

Dr. Cury models his book on Jesus and how He would think in various situations. While I'm not totally on-board with this, since after Jesus was fully God as well as fully human, which would seemingly give him quite an advantage over us, as a Christian I appreciated the emphasis on Jesus.

A major technique Dr. Cury uses in the book is "DCD". He advises us to doubt negative feelings we may have, criticize the negative way we may have responded to those feelings, and finally determine to take charge of our lives and feelings, and move in a positive direction.

I liked his emphasis on taking charge of our thoughts ourselves, and his idea that we are not powerless in the face of thoughts and emotions that come our way. A quote I liked was When we are abandoned by the world, the loneliness is bearable; when we abandon ourselves, the loneliness is almost incurable.

I enjoyed the first 50 pages or so of the book most. After that, it seemed somewhat repetitive to me (or maybe I was just "getting it" at that point!). At times the pyschological jargon got to be a bit much, with various acronyms (AMR, ARP, etc.) and "killer windows" making frequent appearances.

But overall, I give this book a thumbs- up. It's always good to have reminders of how to think correctly, and I agree with Cury's assertion that thinking correctly is one skill most of us were never taught. It's never too late to learn, though, and this book is a good starting place.

More good quotes from the book:

Sometimes we expect too much from people who can give very little.

Everything has a story to tell if only we will pause long enough to listen.

Parents who give their children "things" are remembered until the memory of the "thing" fades, but parents who give themselves to their children become unforgettable. They give their children their story, their experiences, their tears and their time.

A healthy mind leads to a healthy life. Just like other muscle in the body, our brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy. Keeping a healthy mind and continuously stimulating our brain are crucial for a balanced mental and emotional health which in the latter gives positive impact towards our spiritual growth. This book meant to provide tools to help cater anxiety and negative thoughts through ‘12 principles of thinking correctly’.

The principles are in accordance with the primary process of human psyche by stages; from construction of thoughts to transformation of emotions to consciousness of ‘self’ and the role of memory. Most of the chapters are really insightful and it gives me new perceptions about mental health —internal and external things that you can and can’t control and etc. However, I feel like some of the chapters are quite repetitive and the author really focusing on the life story of Jesus as his model which I doubt some part of it.

I really enjoyed this book but from a perspective of an average reader, it would be better if the author use less psychiatric jargons. I personally love to do extensive research about some parts of the book to get more explanations but I guess some won’t do such thing. Overall, I really love the book, definitely a good read especially to be able to know about the author’s experience in his professional practice as a psychiatrist and interesting cases of his patients. Gonna read more books like this!

A well thought out process to work through some of the mental hiccups we experience in life.

The reason for two stars is that the author is not upfront with their bias towards christian beliefs.

Every chapter has a reference to Jesus, a biblical story, or some other line to religion. I believe that this detracts from the overall strength of the message as it limits the audience that can relate to the authors process.

Dr. Cury's book, Think and Make It Happen, provides twelve principles for "developing your extraordinary mind" to "gain the happiness you seek, and achieve maximum impact in the world around you." Jesus is given as our model--a uniquely qualified mentor and the ultimate author of His own life (Principle #1).

I was immediately attracted to Dr. Cury's emphasis on the people skills of Jesus. No one dealt with difficult people better than He. Recognizing Jesus' use of silence, the pregnant pause, and questions, (often in a hostile environment), Cury applauds Jesus' wisdom and mastery of self control.

Dr. Cury's wish to separate Jesus the man from Jesus as God is unsettling. It is impossible, in this writer's view, to separate the deity of Christ from His humanity. Cury appears to try to diminish Jesus in order to appease those with "any form of belief, including atheism." Most Christians attempt to emulate Jesus, and His character, with the full knowledge that He, as God, was sinless, and we are not. Jesus did not leave us discouraged in that knowledge. His Word provides us with ample examples of men and women who sought to live as Christ lived, and fell short of the mark. His outstreached arms and loving heart were much like a parent assisting a child in taking their first steps. There is no doubt the child will fall. The child has no doubt that the parent will help them up.

Contemplate Beauty, Unleash Creativity, and Turn Life into a Celebration (Principles 7, 8 and 12) are worthy and notable pursuits. Although not new concepts, Cury encourages the rediscovery of the senses to experience beauty and the element of surprise to set up creative moments. Cury recommends turning life into a celebration by rescuing lost dreams and establishing strategies to celebrate life.

Overall, I felt Dr. Cury's book would have been more effective if there had been less psychiatric jargon. This book could have been a more enlightening and entertaining read if he had expanded his coverage of the character of Jesus, and the relationship skills He demonstrated. Jesus is the only role model needed when looking for the perfect man to handle imperfect situations. It would also have been an advantage to further compare the disparity of our interactions with man versus humanity's interactions with the Son of Man.

“By harnessing the power of the mind, you can do, have, achieve, and create anything you want for your life.” With that bold quote, Dr. Cury introduces his book’s aim: to unlock unimagined freedom for his readers. Each chapter discusses a new technique to use in the battle against our unconscious minds. Most of Cury’s points center around one main idea: We are to direct our thoughts, “to produce thoughts on a conscious level rather than just letting them play out without any direction or structure.”
