Ein schöner Tag zum Sterben: Als Bundeswehrärztin in Afghanistan

A blast rips the heat-hazed air on Jalalabad Road in Kabul. Then silence. For four young German soldiers their tour of duty ends in a death trap. Dr Groos' book is the first by a woman soldier from Germany to give us insights into the world of soldiers, medics and doctors in Afghanistan. She describes what happens within people who live under the edge, under constant threat and shows us how war harms the human soul criticising a system of both military leaders and politicians which has not yet found a way to stand by its veterans.

One of the very very few books about the German participation in the war in Afghanistan. I HAD to read it, simply for that.

I am a strong supporter of the German engagement in Afghanistan, but that alone gives me mixed feelings. Am I allowed to be a strong supporter of my country fighting a war? Is Germany ready to fight a war? SHOULD Germany be ready to fight a war?

Yes, here's hero-worshipping girl, despairing over the involvement of her own country in the so-called War on Terror. In other words, it's easy to worship heroes, as long as the dirty side of the business stays away from your own backyard. (don't let it be said that I'm not self-critical)

Of course, this is about much more than the dirty side of any war - my mixed feelings have historical reasons, which should go without saying. And whichwould really be beyond the scope of this review, so let's just say they are there and leave it at that.

As for the book, well, I'm glad I read it, despite the fact that Ms. Groos obviously was not ready to be in Afghanistan. She is also in desperate need of therapy, and sadly misuses this book to deal with her own issues.

BUT

The fact that she does, and the fact that she reacted the way she did to her involvement in the war, and that she felt that she needed to write a book about it instead of dealing with her issues like a normal person, kinda anwers some of the questions I was wondering about above. Mainly, it shows that we are not ready for what we are doing in Afghanistan. And as long as German politician don't get their butts up to show some open support to OUR troops, we will never be ready.

Mixed feelings or not, historical doubts or not - we owe it to the people.

Nicht immer leicht zu ertragen und definitiv ein Buch was einen mit vielen Gedanken zurück lässt aber für mich ist es ein sehr gut geschriebenes Buch was besonders erklärt was ein Krieg wirklich mit Menschen macht...bis heute...im 21. Jahrhundert. Wenn es eines erreicht, dann, dass man dankbar ist in diesem Teil der Welt zu leben und zu erkennen wie wertvoll Frieden ist.

Wie die Person vor mir schon gesagt hat, ist dies eines der wenigen Bücher die Einblicke in den Afghanistaneinsatz der Bundeswehr bieten.
Dies war einer der Gründe mir dieses Buch durchzulesen. Nach etwa der Hälfte des Buches war ich sowohl interessiert als auch von den zuerst nebensächlich scheinenden Nebeneinblicken, die die Autorin schildert gelangweilt. Hätte ich zu dem Zeitpunkt eine Wertung abgeben müssen wäre diese warscheinlich nicht annährend so gut ausgefallen wie sie nun letztenendes geworden ist, da es im Mittelteil als unwichtig erschien jedes ''Detail'' aus dem Privatleben nach und während des Einsatzes zu erfahren. Letztenendes war das aber ein ausschlaggebender Punkt für die Bewertung, da Ich finde, dass es in einem solchen Buch neben der Aufklärung von Sachverhalten innerhalb der Bundeswehr auch um die persönlichen Eindrücke und Gefühle geht und diese werden hier wie gesagt ausreichend beschrieben. Zum Ende des Buches hin wurde man genauer über das Denken und den Umgang der Autorin in Bezug auf die Erlebten Einsätze und Traumata aufgeklärt, was den Mittelteil im nachhinein auch interessanter machte. Was Ich außerdem überraschend gut fand, waren die vielen Metaphern und anderen Stilmittel die verwendet wurden. Den Rest sollte der Interessent des Buches sich selbst bilden. :)

wenig geschichtliche Ereignisse, die ich mir von diesem Buch erwartet hatte.. eher gefühlsbetontes Buch..
