I finished Hero Under Fire and immediately needed to fling myself across the nearest piece of furniture like a Victorian widow whose fainting couch has seen too much. This book didn’t just raise the stakes—it yeeted them into the Amazon rainforest and told me to keep up.

“I have been emotionally mugged by a Navy SEAL and a cult in the jungle”

By chapter three, I was already muttering “oh absolutely not” at the page like a woman who has seen one plot twist too many and yet keeps coming back for more because she has no self‑preservation instincts.

Devlin Russo is the kind of man who has weaponized emotional avoidance. He doesn’t do kids. He doesn’t do attachments. He doesn’t do feelings unless they’re bottled, buried, and preferably drowned in whiskey. And then Madeline Roux—his scorching‑hot weekend mistake‑slash‑obsession—turns out to have a daughter.

Cue Devlin noping out so hard he leaves a vapor trail.

But Madeline’s life?
It’s a dumpster fire inside a hurricane inside a cult compound. Her ex drags their daughter into a cult, she infiltrates it to save her kid, and then everything goes sideways in the most “Trish McCallan woke up and chose chaos” way possible.

And just when you think it can’t get worse, the cult packs up and moves to the Amazon rainforest. Because of course it does. Why suffer in a normal location when you can suffer in a place with snakes the size of existential dread?

Devlin and his SEAL team storm in like the world’s hottest rescue squad, only for rebels to attack, the compound to explode into pandemonium, and everyone to scatter like emotionally damaged confetti.

Suddenly Devlin—Mr. I‑Don’t‑Do‑Kids—is stuck in the jungle with Madeline and her daughter, trying to keep them alive while wrestling his own trauma like it’s a crocodile with a grudge.

The tension?
Chef’s kiss.
The danger feels real, the jungle feels alive, and the emotional stakes are high enough to give me altitude sickness.

Madeline is fierce, desperate, and determined in a way that makes you root for her with your whole chest. Cassidy is a kid who deserves the world, not a cult leader with boundary issues. And Devlin?
Oh, Jennifer.
He is a walking, talking redemption arc wrapped in tactical gear and regret.

Watching him slowly, painfully, beautifully confront his past while protecting Madeline’s daughter is the kind of emotional payoff that makes you want to throw the book across the room and then sprint to pick it back up.

Why 4.5 stars?
Because it delivered everything—danger, heart, trauma, healing, romance, and a jungle chase sequence that had me sweating like I was personally being hunted.

Final Verdict
A gripping, high‑stakes romantic suspense that drags you through danger, heartbreak, redemption, and the Amazon rainforest with two characters who absolutely deserve their second chance.
Four and a half stars.
A wild, breathless ride.
And easily one of the strongest entries in the series.

Madeline’s daughter Cassidy is her whole world so when she finds out her ex-husband has involved them in a cult there is nothing she won’t do to get her back. When her attempts to get help go unanswered, she decides to undertake a rescue option on her own which places both of them in danger.

Devlin is a Navy SEAL who was involved with Madeline for a short period of time until he found out she had a daughter which due to his past became a deal breaker. He is determined to get Madeline and her daughter out of the predicament they find themselves in but as the danger escalates around them so do the feelings between them but will it be enough to overcome the past?

This story takes us on an action packed adventured filled with romance, twists and great characters that draw you in and have you invested in their happy ever after.

Wow, wow, wow a high octane SEAL adventure that doesn’t let up.
I have to confess I am a Trish McCallan fan having loved her “Forged In” full length novel quadrilogy (or tetralogy) which is on my re-read regularly for pleasure list.

The great thing about this series, is that each book can be read as a stand-alone novel. Still it was definitely great that we catch up with the wonderful side characters we had met before as well as some of the gorgeous hunks from Susan Stoker’s SEAL series.

Dev is damaged and cannot commit due to dark events in his past. But his deep seated integrity will not allow him to ignore Maddie’s awful plight especially after their unexpected passionate connection. Bad ass though he is, underneath a gallant knight claws his way through.
Maddie’s situation spirals downwards. A mother desperately putting her child first, although hope is fading fast. Dev arrives but without giving too much away, it is far from smooth sailing.
Once again, I was hooked by the drama and adventure. How could they possibly get out of the awful mess they were in? What happened to Dev?
In fairness I was slightly taken aback by some of the vernacular, but I suppose it was in keeping with a rough tough SEAL. Also a 7 year old asking, “to go potty” but this were minor setbacks compared to the great banter throughout.

Well researched details made the story more credible whilst painting a vivid picture of the cloying jungle where danger lurks. The passion is there from beginning to end, smouldering until finally it re-ignites. But this is also a love story with an unexpected twist.

I enjoyed reading it, hope you will too.
I received a free ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Fans of Trish McCallan have waited a long time for her newest novel Hero Under Fire (Special Forces: Operation Alpha) (Operation: Hot Spot), but it’s finally here, and she’s given us a military plot that is contemporary and believable. Readers will enjoy the action-packed details as well as the hot romance between Madeline Roux and Lieutenant Commander Devlin Russo. The story is not about war, but the potential for a war instigated by a group of crazy doomsday preppers. Through no fault of her own, Madeline becomes involved with these people when she joins the group to rescue her daughter, a seven-year-old, taken and kept by these misguided/brainwashed individuals. Madeline’s twin sister comes to Devlin for help. He previously walked away from the budding relationship with Madeline because he can’t be around children; he blames himself for his daughter’s death. Devlin and his team go in, not only to rescue Madeline and her daughter Cassidy, but for the undercover FBI agent and the other innocent children caught in this dangerous situation. During the rescue, Madeline, Devlin, and Cassidy get separated from Devlin’s team and must trek through the treacherous Amazon jungle to reach the evacuation site. The tension-filled details of Madeline and Devlin’s story will keep readers entertained, and the fact that part of the team had to be rescued and part is still missing in action allows for unfinished business that must have its own story. If book lovers haven’t read any of Trish McCallan’s work, they need to do so. They won’t be disappointed because the plots are well-planned and the characters are fully-developed. She’s one of my favorite authors, and I look forward to every one of her novels. Write faster, Trish.

I started the series with this book and while it is a stand-alone, it would have been good to read the first book in the series which I plan to do because this story snagged my attention and held it til the end.

The hero in this story is broken and he doesn't want anything to do with kids, not anymore. There is a tragic story behind the man and his reason for this. But as fate or luck or sinister forces would have it, he has one incredible few days with a woman, and then she drops the bomb, she had a daughter. Upon hearing that news Navy SEAL Devlin Russo walks out the door leaving Madeline Roux feeling disappointed, upset, and like maybe things would have been good if he stayed.

Madeline returns home only to find that her ex-husband took their daughter and joined a cult. Madeline tries everything she can to find someone to help, she even tries to contact Devlin but he ignores her messages. Madeline does what she needs to do and goes to save her daughter. Not so easy and Devlin strong-arms his way onto the rescue team when he finds out she has been taken to jungles of Peru.

Ms. McCallan writes in such a way that I could almost feel Devlin's pain when he comes face to face with Madeline's daughter, Cassidy. She evolves his character in such a way that is believable and not forced. There were some sweet moments between the two when he allowed his walls to come down. Both she and her mother are strong characters and I enjoyed reading about them. Devlin has his flaws and that makes him a wonderful hero. I also enjoyed seeing Tex and some of the rest of Ms. Stroker's characters from books that she has written. Cassidy stole my heart. I will definitely be reading her Operation: Hot Spot series.

This is gripping, suspenseful, intense and sweet. Devlin and Madeline had a hot and intense but brief encounter that ended when Devlin found out that Madeline had a small daughter. Devlin couldn't have anything to do with a child, his grief and guilt over losing his own daughter wouldn't let him be near another child, so he left Madeline without an explanation. A couple of weeks later, when she found out her daughter had been taken into a cult with her ex-husband, she called Devlin to ask for help, but he never even listened to her messages. A few weeks after that, Madeline's sister showed up and told him what happened. Devlin was on the phone in a heartbeat looking for information. Then he insisted that he be a part of the rescue team. Unfortunately, things went sideways during the op, and Devlin, Madeline and her daughter Cassidy end up being left behind, and alone in the Amazon. Devlin fights the feelings he'd already had for Madeline, and the ones that broke through for Cassidy. Both Madeline and Cassidy are tough, strong and determined. Devlin is caring, gentle and stubborn. The trek through the Amazon is fraught with danger, from the creatures that live in it, and the rebel army that infests it. It's a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. It's a book that belongs on your TBR list.

Dev and Maddie have a hot scorching weekend together. He runs out when he finds out she has a daughter. When Maddie returns home she finds her ex has taken her daughter and joined a cult. With no other options to rescue her daughter from a pedophile, Maddie joins the cult. Maddie's sister storms Dev's office and gets him involved. However, by this time the cult has figured out that the authorities are on to them and drug all the members and flee to the Amazon. The conditions in the Amazon are horrific. Just as Maddie's time is running out, Dev shows up to rescue her and the other women and children. The rescue goes awry and Maddie and Cassidy have to trek miles through the jungle to get to a new evacuation point. Devlin's feelings for Maddie and Cassidy grow through this adventure. Devlin carries an inordinate amount of guilt for events that just weren't his fault. Maddie makes a last ditch effort to claim her main but he doesn't go for it. Dev needs a little push from a friend before he can realize his forever lies with Maddie and Cassidy. Great read. I like a little more steam usually but this had lots of adventure that kept me engaged.

I received a free ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. This is my own opinion and was not influenced by anyone.

Hero Under Fire by Trish McCallan pulled me in and held my attention through the last page. This is my first McCallan book so I wasn't sure what to expect. I figured a romance book with a SE@L would have so action, this story had so much action.

Devlin was keeping a darkness down inside that he had to face while rescuing Madeline and her daughter Cassidy. The chemistry between Devlin and Maddie is thermal. When he is able to let go of the guilt holding him back, he is such a wonderful partner to Maddie. He us a true hero at heart and it was difficult to see him struggle with opening up to Cassidy. He clearly is great with kids. She has his heart. Devlin's protective nature for Cassidy and Maddie shows his live for them before he is ready to admit it to himself.

I liked the plot as to why Maddie and Cassidy needed rescuing. Sure cu!ts have been done before but when the SE@Ls go in for rescue, as a reader I felt like I was in on the mission. The action was tense and gripping. This action romance author got it right.

Outstanding! Everything you want in a romantic suspense, with extra swoon worthy alpha heroes and fast paced action. This book has it all including main characters you will fall in love with on page 1. Trish McCallan absolutely knows how to grab your attention on the first page and keep you reading late into the night. Devlin pushes past his comfort zone as he falls in love with Maddie and bonds with her adorable daughter. Side note, Cassidy (the daughter) is an absolute delight and her interactions with Dev are so endearing and just as rewarding as the love growing between the two main characters. This story is well paced, well written, and an excellent read. I can't wait for the next one!
This is the first book I've read in this series, and it reads just fine as a stand alone. Though I definitely want to go back and read all of them. There were some great characters whose stories I obviously didn't know. What is clear and well written is the brotherhood of the SEALS and one SEAL's happily ever after.

HERO UNDER FIRE (Operation: Hot Spot Book 5) by Trish McCallan
I absolutely loved Devlin and Madeline, and Cassidy was such a sweet little character. Devlin meets Madeline when she helps save Tag in a previous book. They have a hot hook up weekend, but he runs out on her when he finds she has a child. He has a terrible tragedy in his history that has defined him. When her ex husband takes Cassidy and joins a cult, Madeline tries to find her by joining the cult. Devlin doesn’t hesitate to go find Madeline and Cassidy when he finds out she is gone.
I love how we get to see other team members or friends from the past in Trish’s books. There is plenty of angst, danger, camaraderie, the love scenes are full of chemistry and smokin’ hot. This can be read as a stand alone, but do yourself a favor and read the other 4 books, you will enjoy them! Trish McCallan is so gifted with her stories that always keep me up all night reading to the very end. It is an excellent, solid well written, romantic suspense story. This is a 5 star read.

Dealing and Madeline had an instant connection and after a weekend of hot sex he thought they might have a chance at something more. But that was before he heard about her daughter upon which he walked away and did not look back. He didn't do kids, not after losing his own little girl. But then Madeline and her daughter, Cassidy, landed up in a sect and needed rescue which for some reason he could not ignore. Being part of a Seal rescue mission he went looking for them but something went wrong and they were left behind, he in charge of keeping them alive until they could be picked up. He would give his life to keep them alive but will his soul survive, seeing his little every time he looked at hers? As a Seal he is a brave hero but will he ever be brave enough to risk his heart again? I just loved this story, it was well written and something different from your run of the mill love story. Certainly a book well worth reading.

To me Hero Under Fire was the most intense of all the Hot Spot series. There's action, suspense and a few edge of your seat moments that will captivate and hold your interest. Add to that the appearances of some of my favorite Susan Stoker characters including the inimitable Tex....it was just icing on an already fabulous cake.

A trek through the jungle is no walk in the park even for seasoned operator such as Devlin Russo. Add in a courageous and seemingly fearless mother, Madeline Roux and her seven year old daughter Cassidy and it's anything but a pleasure trip. Dev may have walked away from Madeline after an incredibly steamy weekend but he could not put her out of his mind. The same held true for her but he'd made his feelings known quite succinctly....he didn't do kids. Yet he's the man who moved heaven and earth to head up a rescue mission and came fully prepared for all contingencies.

This is a fantastic dramatic romantic suspense story. It's fast paced with a great storyline that will keep you reading till the end of the book. Devlin and Madeline hook up for a weekend but the minute he finds out that she has a child he's out of there. Maddie goes home and finds that her ex grabbed their daughter and has joined a cult. Maddie joins the cult to try to get her daughter but things are going from bad to worse. Dev with Rocco, Ace, Tex and Gumby go to the Amazon to rescue Maddie and her daughter. There is plenty of action, twists and turns, and suspense. Once Dev deals with his guilt he falls in love with Maddie and her adorable daughter, Cassidy. First book I've read by this author. Will definitely read some more. I received an ARC copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

WOW, what an awesome story. I love it. Devlin had a weekend hook-up with a woman and then dumped her when he found out that she has a child. Madeline is hurt and angry when Devlin walks out. When she returns home she finds that her ex husband and daughter have joined a cult. Madeline tries to find someone to help her and is unable to. She takes matters in to her own hands when she joins the cult herself to help her daughter. She is unable to find a way out. Her sister goes to Devlin and tells him what has happened. Devlin and his team are tasked with getting them and the children out. He is still determined to leave her again, once he gets her to safety. Fate plays her card. What will happen now? I absolutely loved the ending its so sweet.

After their weekend hookup in Dark Falls, SEAL Devlin Russo was ready to change his life for divorcee Madeline Roux. But that was before he knew about seven-year-old daughter, Cassidy. Dev’s unbreakable rule was he didn’t do moms ever! While Maddie was starry-eyed, Dev backpedaled out of town and didn’t return Maddie’s frantic phone call.

When Maddie’s twin barged into Dev’s office, he was ashamed to learn she’d been calling for help Her ex had inexplicably and uncharacteristically taken Cassidy to a cult led by a pedophile and Maddie had gone in to rescue her. Guilt had Dev getting a team together immediately. During the rescue, Dev, Maddy and Cassidy were separated from the team but that gave him plenty of room to confess his reason for running while trying not to fall deeper in love with Maddy or Cassidy.

The chemistry between Devlin and Madeline was so prominent in the previous book (Future Under Fire) I knew I needed to read this one. What they did with all that chemistry surprised me. Especially Devlin’s reactions and the reasons for them. I was quickly pulled into the story and I kind of never wanted to leave. Filled with action and tension, angst and drama, this book has all the things I love most about romantic suspense. This pair put me through the wringer. I didn’t know whether to cry for them, cheer for them, or slap some sense into them. I loved the way this ended and I’m looking forward to learning the rest of the aftermath of their operation in South America.

So much SEAL goodness

I started this series a few days ago and didn’t realize any of them were part of the operation alpha world. So I was tickled when Tex, Ace and Rocco showed up!

Dev has been in two of the book of this series and is a quiet but extremely talented leader of the SEALs. We saw him on action with Madeline when one of his men were injured in the last book. This story picks up with him and Madeline starting a romance that quickly goes off track. The reasons why are shared and the following rescue is fast and full of action. Tex is instrumental to the rescue and the addition of Cassidy and Madeline to the series and Devs life is sweet and fun! The ending is precious and this was a great read.

Hero Under Fire is the fifth book in Trish McCallan’s series Operation: Hot Spot. This story is mainly of the rescue of Madeleine and her daughter Cassidy from an doomsday/apocalyptic kind of cult. Madeleine had met Navy SEAL Devlin Russo when his team mate was shot in a car park. Madeleine helped until the ambulance arrived. From there until the end of the book the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions as the story unwinds. At the end of the book is a very emotional scene. But you have to read the whole book to find out why it is so special. Recommend this book and author to anyone who likes complex heroes and strong heroines.

I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!! Lost some sleep reading this one but definitely worth it!!

The story-line is filled with drama, suspense, action, romance and a lot of twists and turns. I have read a couple of the author's books now and can say that this is my favorite so far. The story is tense, action-packed, emotional, entertaining and also funny in parts throughout the book. The characters are well developed and have great chemistry that has you glued to the pages. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Read in one sitting and didn’t put down once I started. Lost some sleep reading this one but definitely worth it. Bring on the next book please. Can’t wait to get my hands on it. Happy reading everyone!!!

Hero Under Fire A Must Read

Hero Under Fire is a good addition to McCallan's series and SFOA world of Stoker. This is Devlin's story and his leading lady is Madeline who helps save Tag's life in his story called Future Under Fire. Their story is hot and heavy to start but they may faze out but the chemistry between is off the charts. When Madeline and her daughter Cassidy run into trouble, Delvin, Tex, Ace, Gumpy, Rocco, Lucky and Squish will come to the girls rescue.
It's a good story filled with angst, love, suspense and humor. I personally can't wait for Squish and Lucky's story from McCallan hopefully it will be included in SFOA world. Happy Reading!!

This book really does have it all. A hot seal, plenty of action of all kinds, rescues, armed rebels and armed cult leaders. Madeline ex husband took her daughter into the cult and Madeline went to get her out. Devlin went to rescue Madeline and her daughter Cassidy. Devlin is holdin onto his past and it was deciding is future. There was plenty of action, suspense, and more action. The characters were believable and the story was really good. Highly recommend this book.

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book and I absolutely loved it.

This book is well-written with a steamy romantic suspense storyline, Madeline and Devlin meet one weekend when she helps him save one of his team members. He does a duck when he realizes she has a little girl and he doesn't do children..... when Madeline joins a cult to rescue little Cassidy, Devlin pulls all the strings to go help rescue them. Fast paced with plenty of drama and action, the emotions fly off the pages. Loved it!!

Well...

I’ve always enjoyed this author, and there was something about Devlin and Madeline that I really loved. Throughout this series, Madeline is now one of my favorite ‘heroines’. And the only reason why I gave this book 3 stars, I just felt there was something missing and I can’t quite put my finger on it since I just finished reading the book. The ending was sweet, but just, meh.

Devlin is a Navy Seal and he's had a terrible tragedy in his past. When he has a fling with Madeline and finds out she has a child he leaves. But when Madeline's daughter is taken by the childs father to a cult she'll swallow her pride and ask Devling for help. There's plenty of danger, heat and a very dangerous rescue mission. HEA.
