An interesting summary on the Renaissance. The author took twenty paintings that she felt were a good sampling of art from the 15th to early 17th century. Most of the big artist are represented including Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. There are also a few Flemish painters as well. She goes into detail about each painting and how the artist and painting created new techniques and new trends. While not a definitive study on the period, its good as a beginner's book for anyone who wants to learn more about the period in art.

This isn’t heavy stuff. It doesn’t try to give an in-depth analysis of Renaissance art. But this is part of a cool series of books I stumbled across on my last trip to Barnes & Noble. Die cut windows inserted in the pages cleverly focus the readers attention on specific aspects of the paintings. Twenty Renaissance era works are highlighted with emphasis on the artists’ choice of brushstrokes, symbolism, perspective and chromatic choice. For those who know they are missing most of what they could be appreciating when looking at art, this well-designed slim book feels like a great introduction.

If you are interested in Art History at all I think this book did a nice job as an introduction to the Renaissance. More of an overview, nothing too in depth, but the author did a nice job in tying the artists to the Renaissance and together. This book is a very short read and covers only twenty paintings.
