Well, in this second book of the series, 'A Sullivan Investigations Mystery', murder did indeed take the cake and then some.

Private Investigator, Mackenzie Sullivan and his trust partner, Whiskey, the Irish Wolfhound are thrown into a personal case- someone is trying to kill his God-daughter, Bridget O'Herlihy. Added to the tense situation, Bridget is engaged to a rather, shall we say, pompass idiot, Lawyer, Joshua Lasky. Yes, those Laskys.

Soon, Rachel Brenner, who is trying to solve a mystery of her own, missing or stolen coffins, joins the trio of Bridget and Mac, and Whiskey as they try to keep Bridget safe and sane while the wedding plans spiral out of hand.

When multiple other murders occur...this case becomes dangerous for all. Bullets fly, tempers flare, laughter sounds and you feel the suspense around you as you storm through this page turner paragraph by paragraph.

This novel was a re-read for me as I am readying to read the newest released volume, "Murder doubles Back." I am so glad I did read it again, as it felt new and fresh to me and some of it I had forgotten. A valued remembrance to always check out the backlist of a great series.

"Murder Takes the Cake" by Evelyn David is another great Sullivan Investigations mystery with an intriguing plot and a cast of characters you will come to know and love including Mac, Rachel, JJ, Edgar and Whiskey, Mac's Irish wolfhound. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I have never been disappointed by Evelyn David. And this time, just as always I am laughing and enjoying another Mac Sullivan book. She is actually two very talented women. And when these women get together and write a book - it is a wonderful event for anyone who is a reader.

Mac Sullivan - former policeman -private detective - owner of a wonderful Irish Wolfhound named Whiskey - and possible boyfriend/significant other/future lover for Rachel Brenner. Rachel works at a funeral home owned by Mac's best friend. Which makes her now a part of an extended family of caring people.

Mac has two staff members - JJ who is his punk rocker secretary. She is a technical savant who keeps Mac in the loop when it comes to the world of technology. Edgar a senior citizen who is smart as a whip with a marvelous memory and his own scooter. Both of these people have the desire to be very involved in detecting. Both bring talents to the business. The only problem with both of them - their eagerness can put them in situations which may be dangerous.

This time there is a case for the agency which involves a missing wife, a missing employee at a turkey farm, and a missing load of turkeys. A man calls in to request help and Edgar and JJ are assigned some background inquiries. From there this mystery becomes much more intense. Something which sounds like an easy job becomes a death.

Rachel is concerned about missing caskets at the funeral home. No one seems to know how some high end big boxes could go missing with nobody noticing.

Mac Sullivan books are always written with skill. The plot is very well developed. The reader gets clues along the way, and just when you think you have a handle on things, some new event comes along.

I like the characters. From Mac on down to Whiskey, each one is a well rounded entity who adds to the story. Each of these people remind me of people I know or I would like to know.

And the best thing about this book, and all the Sullivan Investigation books - the humor. As you are reading along, you laugh out loud. So, if you plan to read in public, be prepared for the inquiring looks.

This story includes wedding plans, Thanksgiving dinner plans, and of course the ever popular unplanned murders. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

Mac Sullivan is a nice guy until you threaten his loved ones. Rachel is a quiet woman until you put her in a tight place. JJ and Edgar are two people who snipe at one another but will always support one another. And Whiskey is a dog who is a marvelous judge of character and an eating machine.

Get the book and enjoy.

This is a relatively new series, only the second book in the series. It has plenty of quirky characters, including an Irish wolfhound who can find dead people. Mac Sullivan is a retired cop who now makes his living as a private investigator. When Mac's goddaughter Bridget comes to him saying someone is trying to kill her, Mac starts to look into it. Bridget a reporter in Boston just completed a story on the corrupt cops in Boston's PD when the threats started. The secondary story is about someone stealing casket's from Mac's best friend's funeral home. At the same time a competitor is trying to buy his friend's business. As the dead bodies pile up and the threats on Bridget's life increase, the story gets bogged down and drags while Mac's associates uncover the truth. By the time Mac reveals the killer's identity, you just don't care. Its apparent half way through the book who will be the killer. It just takes the author longer to get there.

The writing team that is Evelyn David is even better in this second book in the series. All the same characters are there with a few new ones for some variety. Whiskey the Irish Wolfhound plays a couple of important parts and Mac and Rachel are dancing around each other, all while in the midst of wedding plans for Mac's god daughter Bridget O'Herlihy. Throw in a few bodies and a couple of dead rats and life just keeps getting more interesting. I can't wait for the next in the series

The second in the series and except for the fact that I can't actually go along and sample the delicious flavors in the wedding cake tasting scene, I loved all this. Moves along the previous budding relationship between Rachel and Mac the detective slowly, however it's more to savor. The cast of characters introduced in the first one is back for the most part including Whiskey the canine half of the detecting partnership.

I'm left wanting more, always a good sign.

This is the second in the Sullivan Investigations Mystery series--murder with a Whiskey chaser!
"Light-hearted fun, with a little mystery; a little romance; a little family dysfunction; and several out-of-the-ordinary adventures thrown in to make it a fun-filled whodunit. It's worth reading just to sort out all the characters." -- Midwest Book Review
