Follow Mike (from Halifax) and girlfriend Jodi (a Texan) through the United States on a tour fuelled by deep-fried pickles and pocket-sized fruit pies. This American Drive is the story of the foods they ate, things they saw, places they visited, laws they bent, customs they mocked... and foods they ate.
It was a cute little book, although I'm not sure it had much of a point. Some of the illustrations were adorable.
And while I can admire the publisher's mission to put out books that may not find a home elsewhere, it could've used an editor... I'm distracted by missing words. And apostrophes.
Beautiful illustrations and a story that will ring true for anyone who has ever crossed the border into the US on a Maritime roadtrip. Food is the highlight, but the pageturner is his relationship with Jodi, his Texan girlfriend.
Loved the illustrations, but the book was a somewhat awkward hybrid of a comic and a long blog post. Too frequently the comic part was repeating information from the text and vice-versa. Made for a jarring reading experience.
