I purchased the entire series of these books on Thriftbooks to aid my business. I greatly enjoyed my accounting classes in college and wish I'd continued. If I could go to school for free, I would get an accounting degree- alas, I don't want to pay. I loved the style, and feel like I'm able to navigate my Quickbooks reports easier with this knowledge. Highly recommend!
Accounting Demystified is a book in the series by McGraw Hill that discusses different aspects of Accounting in a manner different from Accounting for Dummies. It does this in several ways; first off the book starts with the Balance Sheet and its different aspects and items. It includes the Accounting Equation, listing assets according to liquidity and so on. It explains the reasoning behind doing this and provides little questions and quizzes in order to foster understanding. In that sense, this book is somewhat better in its own way. Since it has problems to solve and quizzes to do, it makes sense that I would like this one slightly better.
There are some problems with it, but I don’t think they are too big of a deal. For example, I don’t know if this author works for Dell Inc or is merely a huge fan. Perhaps it is because the author lives and works in Texas. Either way, a great many of the examples deal with Dell, just be aware of that.
So, both of the books on Accounting that I took out were good and both scored the same. I don’t really have much else to say on this book, except that it is older and I don’t think it has an updated edition.
Accounting Demystified most certainly demystified many elements of accounting that my #FrancisMarionUniversity professors swore could only be taught in Greek. Light bulb after light bulb went off as abstract concepts were finally brought together cohesively. I was surprised to find out this book was published in 2011, a full year before I began my accounting journey. I cringe as I think of what how advantageous reading this book during any of the breaks or summer vacations would have been. How the section on financial ratios would have been just the lumination I needed to do better than passing on my senior project. I especially loved the end of chapter quizzes and final exam included in the book. I recommend this book to anyone being their accounting journey and/or dealing with confusion as they stretch their accountant's brain!
The book prints through the border, so parts of the text are unreadable and the author babbles on a fair bit. They also have this air about themselves that we, the reader, are too dumb to grasp at most of the concepts.
Poorly written, and the printer ought to be fired. Thumbs down.
This book was a great refresher as I needed to brush up on my accounting knowledge. The quizzes at the end of each chapter and the final quiz at the end of the book were very helpful.
A good refresher for some topics. New topics for other things like how to run a business. All in all a good overview and I’m glad I read it. It was helpful.
