I think the only reason someone might LOVE a Little Golden Book is if the story is particularly unique, easily wrapped up in 24 pages, and well illustrated. Ones like this that are adaptations of a movie ring a bit hollow, skipping to the action (after getting the Stone from Nicodemus and before drugging Dragon) but still leaving out most of the drama (everything to do with Jenner).
I like the book enough for what it is. I'm just not the target audience anymore, I think. Or, I don't know who would be, since the young reader who enjoys this would ALSO have had to see the movie to really "get" what the significance of the Stone is anyway.
Or... maybe not, since in the movie the significance was "You have a SPARKLY!" I don't know. It feels a bit weird to read without at least the movie if not the original book, particularly since DRUGGING A CAT is involved.
I really enjoyed reading this to the kids. Every page pushes you further and makes you want to know what’s going to happen. Not the greatest bedtime story though, as the kids became wide awake with excitement.
