What is a Treevipus? An amazing creature with the head of a trunkfish, the body of a weevil, and the tail of a platypus, of course. In this delightful book, ten recognizable animals — platypus, baboon, alligator, weevil, opossum, caterpillar, crab, rhinoceros, trunkfish, and ruby-topaz hummingbird — are divided into independently flappable parts that, when aligned, create enough creatures to keep little ones engaged for hours. A brief text offers amusing "facts" about the hybrid animals. Author/artist Tony Meeuwissen adds sound zoological information, and the book’s stout construction can withstand the repeated flips it is sure to endure.
This isn't really the type of book you read - more like the type you flip through, go "AWWWW! A PLATYPUS!" and revisit when you're bored or forced to entertain small children. Either way, it is adorable and serves a higher purpose.
This is a very fun book that depicts 10 different animals, and each animal is broken up i to three parts that can be mixed and matched to create 990 more wild creatures. It is sure to appeal to elementary school-age children.
Today I received a fantastic book - Remarkable Animals by Tony Meeuwissen. This is a true work of love. Standard flip books are easy to make. In this one, the descriptions are set up to match the illustrations on the following page. This meant matching the fonts, kerning, sentence structure, . . . Every time you flip one section, the description changes for the following illustration.
The end-paper at the back of the book has some information on the animals presented.
I’m not sure I would entrust my copy to a child - maybe a preteen. Looking forward to many hours of enjoying the different creatures. I have already told all my friends about this fantastic gem.
I found this book completely by accident at the library and have fallen in love with it! It is a creative and imaginative book that my daughter and I have fun sharing together. Each picture is divided into thirds so that you can flip the sections in different orders to create new animals. I feel that the pictures are amazing enough by themselves, but the descriptions take it to another dimension. They flow together into funny and sometimes crazy captions depending on your choices. Plus the names of the creatures change, too. The possibilities although endless for the animal combinations (1000!) they are endless in terms of the ways you can use and enjoy this book.
I volunteer to read with reluctant readers at a junior school. There were arguments about who's turn it was to read this book! Not a single one of them were reluctant that day. It is very satisfying visually and the text is more subtle and demanding than other 'flip' books. The children loved it - and some of the teachers were pretty smitten too.
Science teachers you need this book!Have kids research two animals then create one of their own using the over 1000 crazy creatures in this book as models.(No more boring animal reports!) So clever & Illustrations are beautiful! Teachers, pair it with Scranimals-Poems by Jack Prelutsky & illustrations by Peter Sis.
THIS is so fun... at first page-through, it has basic information about animals. Facts. The other 999 times you read it, the facts -- and the animals -- change radically. The artwork is quite amusing as well.
This book arrived today ---perfect timing as company stopped by and this kept the young child busy the whole time she was here. Such a cute idea. They can change the pages to change the animals and also the names of the new animals. Great for a child's imagination.
