Love or Perish is a very interesting book from a psychiatrist 1956. It’s wonderful to see a more holistic view of treating people—not just through medicine and drugs. He speaks often about the fact that we have to be conscious of our personalities, our identities, our experiences, and of our responsibility of changing them.

One of his more profound chapters, one of the last ones, is called Lovability. He says, in essence, that we need “to accept self-discovery and self-control as the pathway to love.” What he means here is that people who do not work on themselves, do not open themselves up to change, and strive for love, truly do indeed, perish. He states, “The neurotically guilty man is a loveless man, however diligently he may obey the laws of good conduct.” His whole point is that he wants to see modern psychiatry drive towards love as a solution to mental health issues.

At times, it can be a little bit dated in its language, but it’s a very healthy read for anyone in psychiatry, psychology, or striving to help people heal through love. He believes, and so do I, that love and truth can conquer every anxiety, ill, anguish, past remorse, and relationship issue. I truly believe anyone and anything can be healed on earth and beyond, and it’s wonderful to surround ourselves with like-minded people.
