Luna and the Big Blur is a story about little girl who was in a family of four. She wore these huge glasses, but no one else in her family wore glasses. Not her mother, father, or her brother. She even picked the glasses herself to match her shirt but she still hated them. Luna, for some reason or another thought she was named after a fish. She tried to disguise herself in various ways so no one would see them. She fell asleep and had a dream that she could see. When she awoke, she tried to function without them but found out that she couldn't see a thing. She was doing everything wrong and finally decided to go to her room to go to bed when she realized it was a dream. She even called herself, "Luna the Tuna and said everywhere she goes so does her glasses." Her dad finally came and explained that she was only different because she was nearsighted, but pointed out other things about her that made her special. She even found out she was named after a moon goddess and everything was much clearer.
I would recommend this for children who feel less beautiful or slightly different because they wear glasses. It can be explained to them the reasons why they have to wear glasses and see others like them as well. It can give a sense of security and boost their self esteem. It is actually a cute lively story with pictures of all the things she did to go along with it.
I love this cute little book! At a time when bullying is running rampant in schools it's important that we teach our children to love themselves - self-confidence is the best defense against bullying. Luna's story is a great reminder for children that even the parts we don't like are okay, and they make us unique and wonderful. Luna's story is one of self-revelation, and kids need to have those moments if they are going to survive bullying now and grow up to be strong contributors to society.
I was a little dissapointed in the reason she started liking her glasses. It was unrelated and unrealistic and a child in her position would be disappointed. The illustrations are cute and the idea has a great start but keep on trying. Ages 4+
Cute book!! The kids at the daycare that I work at love this book and request that I read it all the time. They especially love Luna's awesome glasses!
