It was published in 1983. And it doesn't age well.

Red flags everywhere. In real life if you meet someone like Dexter, run away!

This book lost a star for two reasons.

First, the author made a child die (the h's roommate's little boy). I didn't think that was necessary, and it just seemed mean, to me.

Second, the author makes another mistake by having the h (who I liked, up to this point) be one of those silly ones who take the conniving OW's words at face value and rejects the H because of it. The OW (the H's late wife's sister) was self-centered, had her sights set on the H, and obviously thought her little niece a nuisance (while the h adored the little girl), and also tried to put the blame on the h for an accident that put the little girl's life in danger (as well as the h's, when she rescued her) and tanked the h's dancing career! All this, and yet she takes the bitch's words as gospel truth, when she's told the H is just using her, will soon tire of her, and will go back to his womanizing ways, which broke her late sister's heart. (Naturally, she leaves out pertinent details about his first marriage.) Next thing you know, she dumps the h, even after he proposes!

Of course, it didn't help that all he talked about was her beautiful body and how much he wanted it, then he kept going on about how grateful he was for her saving his daughter's life, and how guilty he felt because she could no longer be a ballet star, and wanted to do this, that, and the other thing for her, (but never saying that he loved her) making her believe that he only felt lust and gratitude, hardly a basis for marriage. Meanwhile, the Dumbo loved her but just didn't realize it!

It became a bit nauseating, the way he chased after her, kept wanting to make love to her, but didn't say he loved her until practically the end of the book. And l lost patience with her making nasty remarks, to hide her true feelings. Also, when she wanted to end things with him, she never considered his daughter, who had grown so fond of her. That was pretty selfish.

And for a time (after his wife's death) the H became a real man whore, by his own admission! Maybe he should have had a STD test before he slept with the h!

There was the OM as well, and he was a real jerk, as well as a user. She was well rid of him.

The book shows how tough it is to be a ballet dancer, all the work, training, practice, competition, then the short time span for that career, not to mention injuries that can end it ASAP.

In my opinion, the juice is NOT worth the squeeze!
