Created for introductory courses in basic music theory and harmonic practice, Part 1 of this self-paced, auto-instructional standalone text that comes in two volumes has become a “classic” in the field. Back in college a friend told me he was writing music for piano as a final project for a class in music theory. He had taken many years of piano and thought it was fun and interesting. Just follow the rules and you get something that doesn't sound terrible. He said anyone could do it. So me, with my one year of elementary school cello, signed up. I was immediately in over my head dealing with scales, notes, and theory. It was like a math class without numbers. But I persevered and I too finished up the class with music that I wrote that didn't sound terrible. I couldn't play it, but my friend could. This was one of the two books we used for that course.
