Rate this book
For time immemorial, the tiger has been an object of awe, reverence, and superstition. Its strength and ferocity are proverbial, its presence overpowering. Today, the tiger faces extinction. In the last century, it has dwindled from a population of 100,000 to barely 6,000. Out of 8 subspecies, 3 have become extinct in the last 60 years. Now, The Vanishing Tiger offers a rare look at the history and way of life of an endangered animal. Featuring 200 color photos, this is an essential book for anyone concerned about the future of our planet’s wildlife. Vivek R. Sinha is a former Secretary to the Government of India. Now a professional photographer, he and his wife Arati have spent the last two decades photographing the tiger in the wild.

The Vanishing Tiger: Wild Tigers, Co-Predators & Prey Species by Vivek R. Sinha (Salamander 2003) (599.756). Within the last century, the tiger population has come to the brink of extinction. The number of tigers living in the wild has dwindled from 100,000 down to 6000. Sixty percent of the remaining tigers live in India. Three of the eight subspecies of tiger has gone extinct in the last sixty years. Author Sinha visited extensively among the forest preserves in India and has built a remarkable photographic record of the Bengal tiger of the dry Central Forests of India which is shared here. This is a beautifully rendered volume about an amazing and fragile creature. My rating: 7/10, finished 2005.
