Contempt flashed from Morgan's eyes

And his attitude puzzled Susannah. Was it jealousy that made him so sarcastic whenever she went to see John?

If it was, she could see no reason for it. Morgan had made it plain that his heart's desire lay only in taking over the estate owned by her family -- not in trying to win Susannah.

Ruthless and ambitious, Susannah had labeled him. Yet in her heart she knew it wasn't true!

Essie Summers was a New Zealand author who wrote so vividly of the people and landscape of her native country that she was offered The Order Of the British Empire for her contributions to New Zealand tourism.

Ethel Snelson Summers was born on on July 24, 1912 to a newly-emigrated couple, Ethel Snelson and Edwin Summers, situated in Bordesley Street in Christchurch, Essie was always proud of both her British heritage and her New Zealand citizenship. Both her parents were exceptional storytellers, and this, combined with her early introduction to the Anne of Green Gables stories, engendered in her a life-long fascination with the craft of writing and the colorful legacy of pioneers everywhere.

Leaving school at 14 when her father's butcher shop experienced financial difficulties, she worked for a number of years in draper's shops and later turned her experiences to good use in writing the romantic novels for which she became famous.

She met her husband-to-be William Flett when she was only 13 years old, but it was 13 years before she consented to marry him. A minister's wife and the mother of two, William and Elizabeth, she still found many opportunities to pen short stories, poetry and newspaper columns before embarking on her first novel, which sold to the firm of Mills & Boon in 1956.

Summers died in Taradale, Hawkes Bay on the August 27, 1998.

I simply adore Ms Summers' story telling. Her romances are so engaging. This is a bit of a reunion romance of star-crossed lovers who five years before though they loved each other were too afraid to admit it. This time around they got it right. Morgan and Susannah's HEA was sigh worthy. It was also lovely to meet up with some characters from prior romances.

Lovely reunion romance with a triangle of sorts caused by the heroine's youth and the heroes uncertainty due to an age difference.

Five years ago, Morgan saved Susannah's pride by proposing a sham engagement when he saw her boyfriend making up to another girl. What he didn't realise was that she had already realised her heart belonged elsewhere. When she tried to force Morgan into declaring himself by saying it was time to end the false engagement, he let her go.

Now Susannah is back home and Morgan is not happy. Not happy that she stayed away so long leaving her elderly grandmother alone. Not happy that she immediately picks up her friendship with the now widowed ex-boyfriend.

With some complications from the arrival of a distant cousin and Susannah not knowing quite who to believe between John and Morgan, it takes quite a bit of sorting to get to our happy ending.

Five years ago, at the shipmates reunion, reuniting descendants of New Zealand settlers generations back, Susannah realized she loved Morgan Blair, the older neighbor she had had a crush on as a child. But it seemed everyone was expecting her and John Forrester to make a match of it, only he chose her cousin Francoise instead. Morgan suggested they pretend to be engaged, and Susannah agreed, hoping he would never let her leave. But she hid her feelings too well.

Now, another reunion is planned, and Susannah returns home, only to find herself pursued by the wrong man, since John's wife died two years earlier. If only Morgan would show some interest in her, instead of sniping at the length of her absence! Can they untangle their crossed wires and find happiness together?

Very sweet romance, quick read, with interesting characters. Especially enjoyed "meeting" characters from previous books by this author. Recommended.

What a charming, vintage romance! The characters are a little one dimensional, but the the romance in sweet, and the plot keeps moving. A refreshing beach read.

After reading a couple of in-depth fictional drama-type books, I like to read a light romance especially by a favourite author like Essie Summers or if set in New Zealand.

My copy is hard cover with the dust jacket which is unusual because most light romances are in paperback.

A good story involving a girl, Suzanna and 2 suitors, Morgan and John. Usually one can tell after a few pages how it will end but it is fun reading the process.
