Tracie Tanner #6

The Bashkir Extraction

Rate this book
Tracie Tanner works in the world's most dangerous hot-spots.
On the most high-stakes assignments.
And she works alone.

When a secret Russian military facility is discovered deep inside the Soviet satellite nation of Bashkir, CIA black ops specialist Tracie Tanner is tasked with traveling to the Ural Mountains and placing the facility under surveillance.

A simple assignment.

But once in Bashkir, Tracie observes something so shocking it changes everything.

What was once a straightforward mission now becomes nearly suicidal : Tracie must infiltrate the heavily fortified facility and then recover and extract something of extreme value - a captured CIA operative , a man who has worked with Tracie in the past. His condition is unknown, as are the intentions of his captors.

Working alone and with no backup for thousands of miles, driven by the knowledge that she holds the life and future of another operative entirely in her hands, Tracie soon finds herself facing a staggering moral and ethical dilemma.

There is no good outcome.

And she may not escape Bashkir with her life.

With non-stop action, plot twists you'll never see coming, and a tough, dedicated - but fallible and surprisingly relatable - heroine, THE BASHKIR EXTRACTION will leave you breathless until the final shocking page.

It’s late January 1988 and CIA agent Tracie Tanner is still reeling from the Moscow mission where she barely escaped with her life. Her boss, CIA Director Aaron Stallings, has received intel that there is a secret Soviet military base in the Ural Mountains. Stallings gives Tracie what appears to be a simple mission: travel to Bashkir, extract as much information as she can about the base and return home in four days. But once Tracie gets to the location she sees something that changes her mission entirely. Ryan Smith, the CIA agent that saved her life during the Moscow mission, has been captured and is being held prisoner in this secret military base in Bashkir. Tracie vows to save his life as he did hers or die trying. Ever smart and cunning, Tracie Tanner, faces a moral dilemma in this one that will eternally haunt her. Taut with tension and packed with bone-chilling scenes that leap off the pages, The Bashkir Extraction brings back the international intrigue of the cold war in a thrilling new way.

Another good read from Allan Leverone.
I'll get my nitpick out of the way first: I thought the pacing of this tale was less effective than the other books in the Tracie Tanner thriller series. I would rather have gotten Tracie inside the Bashkir facility sooner and made her overcome more convoluted obstacles once she got there.
On the substantial plus side, Leverone comes up with a thoroughly horrifying mad scientist scenario, and takes Tracie further down the path of self-recrimination for the lethal choices she makes. That character arc plus the elements of action and horror make this series one I look for.
FYI, I received my copy of this book as a gift, with no obligation to review it.

I really enjoyed this latest installment to the Tracie Tanner series. She is such a take-charge character, and I love it when she starts taking people down. The odds were pretty steep against her in this story, and it was highly entertaining to watch it play out.

Average Thrills

Dialogue is difficult to write, especially in spy novels. The plot hummed along but was occasionally bogged down by some silly dialogue, certainly too lengthy for the situation.

Best book yet

I have read the first 6 books in this series. I have enjoyed them all, but this was my first “can’t put it down” experience. Tracie Tanner is a a great and unpredictable character. Looking forward to Book 7.

Every book in this series is good, but the Mashkir Extraction is arguably the best yet. This book cost me too many hours of sleep because I simply could not put it down. Well done, Mr. Leverone!
