Our people are born in the shadows. Destined to die in their clutches.
As a faerie growing up in The Pitch, the coppery essence running through your veins is easily worth more than your life—unless you prove otherwise. It’s an accepted truth; the reality of our world. But I refuse to accept that fate, knowing there’s more for me. A glittering future beyond the one I was spawned into.
There are only two paths out of The Pitch, though, and there’s no way I’ll end up drained and discarded like my parents. When my wings sprout and my affinity for persuasion arrive at sixteen, I join the King’s Menagerie of nectars and set out to forge a new outcome for myself.

Pitch is a villain origin story set in The Blaze Legacy world. It contains some on-page content best suited for readers over the age of 18. It does not end in a HEA.

Umm hi my heart is broken 🙃
I absolutely loved this prequel. I am a SUCKER for origin stories. This was perfect. The twist, the growth, and the pain.. I felt it all. I loved the way the author gave us the origins of the enchantress, not all is what it seems in this world. Can’t trust nobody!

Huge thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All opinions are my own.

Y’all don’t sleep on this novella. It throws out so much backstory for our favorite dark witch and drops a ton of Easter eggs to pickup in Ascend (coming out this summer)!

This world and these characters just don’t stop growing 💯

I have no words. L. R. Friedman has done it again. Her writing is as persuasive and seductive as the Enchantress herself. A beautiful and heartbreaking story that provides so much more context to the character everyone loves to hate in The Blaze Legacy series.

"Art is the most beautiful deception. An image woven to persuade." And what better way to persuade than by giving context, to bring you onto the other side of the deception? There's deceit, here, alright, from new and intriguing sources.

What a pleasant surprise! While the presentation of the first two books of The Blaze Legacy have left me mostly lukewarm, Pitch felt a step above the rest. Rich prose far beyond what the main series has provided made for a more pleasing journey, even with the difficult content it described (difficult, but never tipping the line into trauma porn). The storytelling is more compelling, less tropey. More direct worldbuilding finally properly fleshes out some aspects of Celaria, with most of the work done for the new region of Faerie Hollow, inclusions that enrich and enliven the world beyond our lead characters. New locations to broaden the world, more minor and background characters to deepen the world, some lovely descriptions of color and texture to infuse it with life: it feels like Lauren is truly honing in on her voice.

Long overdue context adds much needed layers to the main story. We have some answers for the origin of the constant flow of fairy blood (though we don't know the exact status of the kingdom or most of its denizens, or how both worlds are getting supplied with it). We get satisfying backstory for a previously one-note villain (tragedy is in her blood, in every sense). We get interesting parallels to Kyleigh and Aislin's journies from Deirdre's, especially (intriguingly) Kyleigh (I love a character parallel and there are several here). We get ruminations on power, political scheming, and a valuable commodity crucial to the survival of an empire (the blood must flow). I'm very intrigued to see how this backstory comes around to haunt Ascend and its characters, especially a certain newly-minted faerie lad. The little crown on Travis' chapter icon is about to payoff in a big way.

--For its importance to the narrative and stark reality of some of its characters, it's odd how little attention is paid to the various up-and-downsizings, especially as it seems to require blood (unless the spell that Ciarin gets translated is different from what is used day-to-day in the menagerie)

--"Tantalizing" already means "to leave you wanting more"

--Celaria's magic system is still *very* soft, to the point that stakes are still frequently unclear, especially the evil book and the climactic heart transplant. Darkhold Davey Jones, while a solid hook for a villain, doesn't much bother to justify itself

--Does everyone in this realm have dusky nipples?

--Using "tendrils" for both the Enchantress' wings and for her sex magic had me rereading passages frequently near the end, as which was which occasionally got muddled

--Deirde's name is mentioned once, very casually, not played up in the slightest. An odd way to treat something that feels like it would be such a reveal. It could be telling of the Enchantress' dislike of it, making it all the easier to embrace her new moniker, but it remains to be seen whether or not it will play out as a twist later in the series

--While a fascinating new location, the existence of which contextualizes so much about this world, there is not enough Faerie Hollow. Always confining characters to a few specific spaces hasn't done this series any favors, and I'm looking forward to Ascend having more of a quest narrative. It's past time to see some of the countryside, and make new friends elsewhere in the world

--In this week's Reptile Report, we have a sentient snake visiting the menagerie! A shame he doesn't seem of the best sort

A prequel that genuinely enriches the world and some of its characters, 7/10

I LOVED getting more background story on the Enchantress. Everything in Descend and Scale makes so much more sense!

My heart breaks for everything she went through. And I hope she does get a tiny bit of a happy ending eventually (or finds who she is looking for). I have theories and can't wait to see if I'm right in Ascend.

okay, I LOVED this novella!

The Enchantress gets under your skin throughout this series and has you constantly wondering what in the world happened to her for her to end up so horrible. This novella delivers and lets the reader see things from her prospective and gives far more insight on some of the history of things. It's difficult to read at times because you end up rooting for her.I won't leave spoilers but definitely don't skip reading this one! Due to the nature of the Enchantress herself, there is a ton of spice in this one too.

Wow this was eye opening. Now I understand  the enchantress, they wronged her big time. In  Pitch we got to see how the Enchantress became the Enchantress and her backstory would turn anyone into a villain. I hope she gets justice for what was done to her or at least gets some sense of peace iykyk but I don't think she'll  know. I do think I know who it is and if it is that would be gross but I also suspect someone else being her grandson so we'll  see but such a good read.

Although I have absolutely ADORED the rest of the Blaze Legacy series up until this point, Pitch just was not my cup of tea like the others have been. Pitch is the prequel that follows the origin story of Deidre, better known as the series' villain the Enchantress. Deidre has a truly heartbreaking story, which I'm sure serves as the springboard as to why she becomes the "evil fairy" everyone knows her to be in the Blaze Legacy series. Through the betrayal, heartbreak, and sexism imparted on Deidre, it is absolutely no guess as to why Deidre became the heartless Enchantress who preys on those weaker than her. However, the sexual content in this book was too much for me, which is why I gave it a 3-star rating. I totally understand the use of the sexual content in this prequel, but for a novella that is only 114 pages, I feel as if nearly 60% or more of the story detailed Deidre involved in some form of intercourse or group intercourse. Spice in fantasy novels doesn't bother me if it contributes to the plot, but several of the sexual scenes felt they were done simply for the spice and not for the overall themes of the story. Yes, intercourse is a major piece of the Enchantress' (and, therefore, Deidre's) past trauma and current personality as a result, but I felt as if several of the instances did not build towards this character's past so much as it did as provide the explicit spice that has been popular in most modern fantasy novels. Maybe I also didn't like this novella as much as I did the rest of the series because I'm not particularly a fan of the Enchantress as she scares me and I can't stand what's she doing to some of my favorite characters, haha.

Possible Spoilers!

What can I say, Lauren has outdone herself again!

This novella takes place before the first book in the Blaze Legacy, Descend. (I would definitely read Descend before reading Pitch!) I’ve been curious about The Enchantress, the series villain. In this you get her backstory and holy moly it is the best. I’d be a villain too.

First she’s working for King Chadwick in his menagerie, where anything goes. She’s his favorite. As he puts it, his rook. Something to be used. With her powers of persuasion she makes the most of her situation but she’s pregnant now. The fairy king, Chadwick, has planned all of this to take over Prince Ciaran. My mind was blown by this, for her to have no control.

Prince Ciaran is just as bad. As long as she’s of use to him and Arafax then he will help her. He only cares about power. She’s a woman with very little options to survive and give her baby the best upbringing. Of course her trust is misplaced and the betrayal is the worst you could do to someone.

She gets used and abused by everyone. When all she wants is freedom to move as she pleases and raise her child. This is so relatable. What would you do if your power was taken at every turn? Her revenge and thirst for power all makes sense now. I’m almost rooting for her.

Lauren is the best at writing high fantasy! She gives every character motive and can justify every action. She really makes you question who the villain truly is. Her descriptions and world building are so in depth it makes you wonder if you could travel to her world in real time. Very visually stimulating. She will make you question how you missed all the bread crumbs she has left for you along the way. Lol She’s very good at leaving hidden clues.
I will read anything she writes.

For fans of a good villain backstory and high fantasy. Also If you love spice you will not be disappointed! The Enchantress is smoldering.

Quotes: ‘“I can’t wait to show him the moon.” Staring up at it finally, how foreign all of this felt. I’d never heard of giving without expecting something in return.’

“They’d taken everything from me. I’d let them—thinking I knew how to outmaneuver them. But I underestimated the greed of men. Their taking would never be enough as long as there was something to give. But they couldn’t take him.”

“Haven’t you realized, darling? True power means you can do whatever the fuck you like.”

“Love lingers where memories have faded.”

Pitch is the Enchantress' origin story. She is one of the characters in The Blaze Legacy series. While it can be read at any time, I recommend at least having read Descend, the first book in the series.

The Pitch is a part of Faerie Hollow. Those that reside there are extremely poor and sell their blood in exchange for a warm meal. Most who are born there, die there, living unpleasant and difficult lives. Those who get out do so either by joining the King's army, or becoming one of his many concubines who live in service to the King, and with whomever he chooses to share.

Deirdre (Dee) used her external beauty, and her understanding of power, to best navigate to a place where she felt some semblance of control over her life. When she learns that she is with child, it turns out one of the King's invited guests was purposely given a faulty contraceptive tonic. The King brings her to his home and intends to raise the child as his heir, but Dee hopes to be able to cash in on some owed favours to find freedom for herself and her sapling.

The freedom I enjoyed was a carefully crafted illusion...

...learning very quickly that sex existed for two purposes: power and pleasure.

And a male, one who'd been handed everything in life, didn't understand the power of a desperate female with nothing to lose.

From our introduction to the Enchantress, it was clear that she must have suffered a great deal for her to become such a shrewd villain. This book gives us a glimpse into her past and her pain. It is rare to be able to sympathize wholeheartedly with the big bad of a story, but this book tells her story and it is clear that she has suffered more than most.

I underestimated the greed of men. Their taking would never be enough as long as there was something to give.

This was a quick, easy, heartbreaking and spicy read. It seems like many "Easter eggs" were buried in this novella which will lead to better understanding later in the series. I definitely look forward to discovering what else the author has in store.

"And a male, one who'd been handed everything in life, didn't understand the power of a desperate female with nothing to lose."

I have always been fascinated with the Enchantress from the Blaze Legacy Series. Now, all I will say is that I am secretly rooting for her!!!

Pitch is a beautiful yet heartbreaking back story of the Enchantress. We see where she is from and what drives her motives throughout Descend and Scale.

Not only do we get the back story, BUT we also get little easter eggs for Ascend, the third book of the series yet to be released . I am a sucker for little hints and am now trying to piece together different things that may happen. I love this about lrfriedmanauthor writing!!! She gives us so much depth to the characters, and that depth isn't just black and white. Now I'm rooting for the villian.

Thank you so so much to the author for sharing an ARC of this novella with me !!!

“More beguiling than any woman, and a thousand times more deadly.
They called her...the Enchantress.”

I don’t think my heart was ready for this book.
Honestly speaking I’m still not over what I felt reading it. So many different feelings and emotions. It was both hot and terribly cold. The author had the ability to make me shiver from spice one chapter and then ugly cry with unfairness and pain the next. As a short novella to better explain the past of one of the most important character in this book, it felt so well developed and so deep it is hard to just forget when I read when I will read book three in the series !!!

I have more questions after reading this than i did going in but in the best possible way. I neeeeeeed the next book 😂

I legit did not think i could feel sorry for the enchantress but i dont blame her for wanting everyone to burn.

Thibault and Pierce 😭 whyyyyyyyyy

If i didnt already hate powerful men i do now.

On a more serious note, all of the fabulous Friedmans writing is impeccable but this novella was just so incredibly written. The flow, word choices and prose were top notch and the invented terms and world building were easy to follow but beautifully intricate. I am counting the days to Ascend.

Ouch.
So good… but ouch.

I love a good origin story.
We all know that Author’s have hundreds of pages worth of backstory in their heads that we never get to see on page….but with Pitch I feel like we finally got a sneak peak of how detailed and intricate this author’s characters are.

I really loved this. I went in expecting some pain…. But hot damn. My heart.
I have sooooo many questions, which I know will be answered soon.

Definitely read this one before book 3 comes out.

I was invested in the Enchantress from the moment she appeared in “Descend”, and I wondered how she gained her powers and became such a fearsome entity. I just about screamed happily when finding out she has her own origin story. Reading it made me well up with tears. Her character has rich roots in the foundations of the Celaria we come to know in the main series; roots that are tethered in violence and grief.
You know how we support women’s rights but ALSO women’s wrongs? This book is extra proof of that. The Enchantress is a violent, sexy, authoritative, alluring presence that is taking back everything that was taken away from her. She has every right to after what we find out in her story.

This prequel novella was soo good! I was not prepared for everything this book gave. If I am being honest, I was not the biggest fan of the Enchantress in the first two books in The Blaze Legacy because she is seen as a villain but after reading this my heart breaks for her. The events that she has gone through really makes the readers feel for her and gives a backstory to why she is the way she is. This book has only furthered my need to read the 3rd book when it releases!

Thank you L.R. Friedman for gifting this! All opinion are my own.

The epitome of a villain origin story and it’s FANTASTIC 😈

This can be read either before books 1 and 2 (Descend and Scale) or after, but it’s advised to read it before reading book 3 (Ascend)! Check your TW please- this is NOT a HEA ending.

We get a look into the Enchantress and her past and it was truly emotional, interesting and intriguing and I have some theories now 👀 It was fun seeing some familiar names but also seeing new characters from before the Blaze!

I really loved this novella and I can’t wait to learn more in Ascend now!

Well then.... this was NOT what I was expecting! At All! I really did not like the Enchantress in books 1 and 2 but I was also very intrigued by her. I wanted to learn more about her and this delivered!

This was HEARTBREAKING. We find out exactly why she is the way she is and honestly, I think I love her character now. I cannot wait to see how this plays into the series and I will definitely be looking at her in a new light.

This novella explores the background for The Enchantress, the villainess of the Blaze Legacy books. It ripped my heart out and threw it on the ground to be stomped on. It also gave me more info on why she is how she is in the Blaze Legacy books I’ve read so far.

If you don’t like books that end without a HEA, this is not for you. Also, this novella has a lot of sexual content. So if that’s not your thing or you’re not 18+, you won’t enjoy it. It’s not content that’s easy to skip through.

I read this book because it was marketed as a prequel, but, having not read the main series, it read as if everything would have made a lot more sense had I read the main series first. The ending kind of glossed over the young visitor as well which I thought would maybe have something to do with the main series but then when I went to look at it the main character was a young woman instead of a young man. This was fine, though it really didn't spark my interest in continuing on.

I don't know what I expected, but it was NOT THAT. That heartbreaking tale made me hate so many people and feel so much for that evil woman. I want to continue to hate her so much but also, like, I get it now.

Ugh, I don't want to feel anything but utter hatred for her, and now.... I don't. And that is quite rude. My own heart is so broken for what happened in this story and now I don't know if I can go on. (I obviously will but ugh, I'm going to need a minute first lol)

Well, just cried my eyes out while reading the last 20 pages. This novella was so good! It gives a amazing backstory of the Enchantress and where she's from. While it is a bit darker then Descend and Scale, it fit's perfectly by the story of the Enchantress. I loved getting into this and can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Thank you L.R. Friedman for the Arc to read this novella!

This book was my equivalent of dumping my heart in a bucket filled with boiling tears. The Enchantress’s story gave me Wanda Maximoff vibes in a way, and I’m all for books that dive into the the traumatic experiences that shaped villains as we know them. It is worth the read and emotional damage (L.R. you know how much I enjoy suffering with your books ❤️)

Finally the origin story we were waiting for! Through reading The Blaze Legacy books, I have been aroused by The Enchantress. Sure, she’s the villain but has that stopped me before? I loved seeing how she came to be and as heartbreaking as it was, I’m rooting for her. I have so many questions and theories now. Y’all be ready because I’ll be starting Ascend to find out!

Once again reading this as a read along with the author. And just for preface I’m reading it in between Scale and Ascend. Cannot wait to read Ascend.

Make sure you read this before Ascend!!

This give so much light to The Enchantress. Her motives make more sense after reading Pitch. She deals with more emotions in this novella than I ever expected.

I love when I get a backstory on a villain. I feel that it makes the plotline deeper and creates a greater connection.

This had my emotions going every which direction. And I loved getting to know more about Celaria, and the faeries. And they way they live.

But it was gut wrenching, and so well done. I would read more just off of the Enchantress POV alone.

Okay woah. Pitch sent me for a loop. I knew this was The Enchantress’s story but what I didn’t expect was to feel for her. Her whole story is sad and makes you totally understand why she is the way she is. I hate that I don’t hate her so much anymore. As I mom, I get it.
