Men envied Breaker Winslow and women wanted to sleep with him. As a top cover model with a budding acting career, he embodied every man's dream. Living in a townhouse in Manhattan, Rick Breaker Winslow had everything he ever wanted. When fire ripped through his home, trapping his beautiful golden retriever, Breaker pushed firemen aside to rescue his beloved dog. While heading for the stairs with the canine in his arms, a falling beam crushed them, killing the animal and scarring Breaker's face. Life, as the famous Breaker Winslow, disappeared. With his career finished, Rick appealed to his friends -who turned their backs on him. Broken, despondent, and alone, he takes refuge in a decrepit farm house in rural Pine Grove. Can the man who had success and love around every corner rebuild his life or is escape the only answer?
I've been making up stories for as long as I can remember. When other kids wanted to be doctors, teachers or firemen, I wanted to be a writer. As soon as I could read, I began devouring books. I'd read anything I could get my hands on, but Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" and Nancy Drew mysteries were early favorites. In school, term papers were my favorite homework. While others bemoaned the amount of work involved, I jumped in, burying myself in research and writing the document with care. Still fiction was my first love. After college and a degree in English, I fell into the world of advertising. After many years in corporate America, I went my own way. Working and raising two kids took all my energy and creativity. But when the youngest went off to school, all the stories ideas in my head came to life. Mac Caldwell and Callie Richards landed in my head and refused to leave. So I told their story. What started as one book has become six. Now I greet my characters every morning at six and jump back into their story, enjoying every minute. I'm blessed to be able to work at something I love. More than 70 books later, I'm still up at the crack of dawn, crafting the tales of the people who live in my head while nursing a cup of tea and a few pieces of black licorice.
This is an enjoyable story that moves along at steady pace. The characters are interesting, particularly Dr. Dani. I honestly had trouble connecting with Rick/Breaker, he came off as arrogant and shallow. He made some choices that I have a hard time believing he would agree with. Oliver, the pugRick rescues is adorable. Maybe it’s me but I have a hard believing everyone in town prefers drinking vodka tonics and enjoys bird watching, themes that appear in both this book and the previous one.
My heart broke just by reading the summary, I read the first book in this series and loved it so much that once I read the summary I just had to add this to my list of must reads. What it must be like to have the world at your feet (I wouldn’t know but it must be nice) but then to have it all taken away and lose your best bud at the same time. As a dog lover and losing my best bud a few months ago I know just how Breaker felt, I know if I was in his shoes I would have done the same things too. There is nothing like the love of an animal so for me this was a double heart break. This man lost everything from his looks to his job along with his home and his pet. There is nothing like a finding out who your true friends are when you hit rock bottom. For Breaker that is a double whammy when the dust settles he finds he is standing alone with no one to lean on to help him through his lost.
The author gives a well blended story from stud to dud in a blink of an eye. It is like he changes before your eyes from the vain selfish player who is so arrogant most of us wouldn’t be able to stand to be around him into a very kind, loveable man who helps others and gives back. It isn’t all bad or sad the author adds some humor to make you smile and chuckle. It is very easy to relate and fall in love with these characters. My heart really went out to Breaker/Rick as his cousin pushes and pulls him into getting his life in order, going out and meeting people but he has dug his feet in and isn’t having anything to do with it. He meets Dani and is torn between his feelings for her. She knows who he is and has had a crush on him for a while. I lost my heart in no time flat to this author as she sucked me in I found I was so invested and couldn’t put it down. I loved the plot I thought it was well written giving the read everything that makes a story the best as it weaves around your heart. I really enjoyed watching Breaker come out of his shell and start over. The romance is just so touching that it really grabs your heart. There is a little bit of everything here that pulls the reader in giving a compelling read that stays with you after you put the book down. I was hooked from the first page…. ***************

This book is so good! Breaker Winslow is a model in New York City. His townhouse catches on fire and he runs back in to save his beloved dog Ralph. Unfortunately a piece of the ceiling comes down on the two, scarring Breaker’s face and killing his dog. He gets the best plastic surgery he can, but his face is still somewhat scarred. He thinks he looks hideous, but in reality it is not that bad. He moves to a small town where his cousin lives and buys a house with lots of land, a barn, and chicken coop. Some people drop off a pug by his house and he takes the pug in. One day a bear attacks the pug so he rushed the pug to the vet. Dani is the vet and she saves his dog. Breaker now goes by Rick which is his first name. Dani recognizes him, as she had a crush on him by seeing him on pictures of book covers and other print media. The two begin seeing each other.
It was like Rick was two people. When he was Breaker Winslow he was arrogant, selfish, vain, and a player. As Rick and living in the small town he was kind, caring, thoughtful, and did menial jobs. This was the man I liked. There are some incidents that take place that threaten Dani and Rick’s relationship. I was proud of Rick in how he finally handled the problems. This was a great book that I strongly encourage you to read. I was given a copy of the book, and voluntarily read it and wrote my review.
I just loved this book, why you ask? because it was a good old fashion love story where its not insta love or some virgin or billionaire who is so slick he would give an oil spill a run for its money. Rick is a guy who had it all as a model and lost it after a tragic fire where he not only lost his good looks but also his dog he tried to save ! Now he is hiding out with no confidence and wallowing in self misery and then along come Oliver and he helps change Ricks outlook as well as allows him to meet Dani who is a great straight shooter who has been burned by love. You get to see how their relationship evolves as well as how they find themselves along with all the ups and downs that go along with it. Their characters are flawed but real and i also love the support characters and can't wait to read more in the series and find out what more home grown romances are going to happen!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This story has it all! When Breaker's townhouse erupts in fire, he loses more than just the house. His whole career depends on his looks and the fire has taken them from him. He has lost his house, his dog, his career, his fickle friends and needs to get away. He moves to a small town near his cousin to regroup while his townhouse is rebuilt. He has become a recluse and his cousin is gently trying to get him back to living, but he fights her every step of the way. He meets Dani and he begins to feel again and isn't sure what to do about that. I loved how this story seemed so very real and you become invested in the characters as you learn their stories. Rick (Breaker) has to decide whether or not his life in the limelight is more important than love and how he gets there is absolutely beautiful!
Breaker Wnslow was loved by fans, friends and those around him but that was all gone when it was all destroyed everything career after a fire consumed his home and beloved golden retriever. Leaving him with scars that devastated his life, he went back to Pine grove to live his life alone. But finding an abandoned Pug, he met Her. Dani is the new vet with a secret of her own, a man she loved treated her wrong and decided she didn't need a man. He wanted to left along until his Pug Ollie needed her .She looked past Rick's scars and both felt something between them that they couldn't deny. Both had to moved past their feeling of doubt and be with each other. If I could give this book a higher rating I would , I love every moment.
When a model gets hurt and has a scar on his face he moves to the country after he dropped and shunned by his appearance. What he doesn't expect is to find someone who look at the person he is inside and out but will his insecurities keep him hidden from being happy?
I truly love this book we all deal with some imperfections and we have to be strong and have faith to over come them.
I’ve loved (and, by the way, highly recommend) all of this author’s sports romances, so I couldn’t resist the temptation of trying out something different from her. I’m glad I did. This is a wonderful book with a strong message of the healing power of love. Dani and Rick have wonderful chemistry and it was a true pleasure following their story.
Break My Heart (Pine Grove Book 2) by Jean C. Joachim is an excellent read. This is a powerful and emotional read. A heart achingly beautiful story of loss, pain and recovery. I really enjoyed this book and the characters in it. Rick and Dani have great chemistry and I loved seeing them work toward a HEA. I am posting an honest review after reading an ARC copy of this book.
i wanted to be sad and mad at the same time. how people can be so cruel. he is scarred on his face from a fire his was in trying to save his dog who end up dying. now he is on a farm and sees a dog on the side of the road who he takes in. takes it to the vet and meets her. she doesnt have a problem with his scars.
Break my Heart is a beautiful story of a man who thought he had it all and was lost when it was tragically taken from him. Rick goes to Pine Grove to disappear from the world only to find that there was another better world waiting for him. Ms. Joachim has written a great story and wonderful characters that pull on your heartstrings. 5 stars all the way.
3.5 stars. A well written book. The plot was developed, however, I had trouble connecting with the characters, and I didn't see any real growth in the characters. *I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
I wanted to like this. The main character was so shallow and wooden, it was hard to like him. The writing style kept pulling me out of the rather unbelievable storyline.
I received this book for free, in exchange for an honest review.
