Quinn McBride insisted that the man Harrie had been casually dating was a blackmailer! Harrie had no choice but to spend time too much time with the arrogant Quinn, who was determined to stop the blackmailer in his tracks. Harrie didn't know if she could trust or believe Quinn; the only thing she was sure about was that, no matter how hard she fought against it, she found him incredibly attractive....

Re To Have a Husband - Carole Mortimer kicks off her Bachelor Sisters Trilogy with this fairly uninspired 2.5 star HP outing.
The basics on this one is that the Hero's sister is engaged to the next Prime Minister of England, (Larry, the #10 Cat hasn't moved in yet,) but she is being blackmailed by the heroine's casual boyfriend to provide seekrit political dirt that the casual boyfriend can use to muckrake political news stories for his paper.
The h's father owns the newspaper in question and the h is her father's publishing empire lawyer. The H shows up while the h is doing a gypsy palm reading act for the CM and Penny Jordan standard HPlandia Village Fete as our story begins.
The H is pretty snarky with the h, but soon he is hauled off by the h's younger sister-a helicopter pilot, to go meet with the h's father. The h shows up to the meeting soon after, in her corporate counsel guise and the H assumes that she is her father's mistress.
The h figures out the H's assumptions really quickly and is highly insulted at his subtle slurs - especially because his sister tarted herself out in an affair with a married man and now the h's casual boyfiend is threatening a huge tabloid exposé if the H's sister doesn't cooperate with him.
The H wants the h's father to use his considerable power to crush the story and save the H's sister from having to break her engagement and it was at this point I decided that irony, thy name is Carole Mortimer.
The h is outraged over both the H's behavior about her father and about the fact that she likes her casual boyfiend and has had nothing but great times with him. Then her father drops the bombshell that he set her up, cause he doesn't like the casual boyfiend either.
The h storms off back to London, but her father insists that she give the H a ride back to the City too. The h is pretty livid, but she soon finds out that her boyfiend really is a louse.
The h's father gets the H's sister out of the fire by having his women's features editor do a story about how the poor Tarty Sister was really a Semi-Innocent Almost Unicorn Grooming Helpless Widow Taken Advantage Of and thus scandal is averted.
The H decides he wants the h and proceeds to stalk her. He shows up at her house at odd times and it is during one these impromptu visits that the boyfiend shows up. The boyfiend gets his shot at mauling and attacking the h, but the H returns to run him off.
In true HP Hero Style, the H then proceeds to do some mauling of the h himself - before he realizes that she isn't that into it and takes himself off. This isn't the end of his stalking tho, especially when the h's manipulative father decides that the head of an international banking conglomerate is a fine addition to the family.
The H and the h's father conspire to get the H and h together for a weekend at the h's family pile and forced kool aid imbibement with extra roofie kissing is ordained for every hour on the hour in between nursing the h's youngest sister over her current "flu like" symptoms and the h's helicopter pilot sister playing the wanna be OW game to the hilt for the H's team.
We get a small showdown with the ex boyfiend and the h gets the standard HP Mopey Moment when the helicopter sister winds herself all around and over the H.
All the kool aid gulping, pretend OW threats and the roofie kissing moments rapidly have the desired effect upon the hapless h and soon she and the H are declaring a lifetime of love after four days of being in the same area as each other for another CM Hero raspy voiced HP HEA.
I just wasn't feelin' the love on this and the h's helicopter sister is truly the Typhoon of Tackiness avatar in this one. I don't like the keepin' it in the family trope, so while this is not Anne Mather's Continent of HPlandia by any means, it still leaves that icky smog feeling from a sub-par HP outing.

Quinn McBride insisted that the man Harrie had been casually dating was a blackmailer!
Harrie had no choice but to spend time -- too much time -- with the arrogant Quinn, who was determined to stop the blackmailer in his tracks. Harrie didn't know if she could trust or believe Quinn; the only thing she was sure about was that, no matter how hard she fought against it, she found him incredibly attractive...
An enjoyable story with Quinn and Harrie. A really nice read with a lot of jealousy between them, but they sorted it out together in the end. A lovely ending.....aaah. 4☆
Quinn and Harrie did not hit it off right away...instead they were like enemies! He's accused her current boyfriend of blackmailing his sister and she couldn't believe it.
Yet they cannot deny the chemistry between them. So when the slimy reporter boyfriend proved to be the scum Quinn and her father Rome tried to tell her he was, she's shattered. More shocked and embarrassed by her poor judgement of character I believe. ..
Interesting read; I want to read about the other two sisters.
Again noted that by the time this book was written our characters should all have mobile phones but somehow they still only seemed to rely on home phones. ..
There's blackmail, instant dislike between Quinn and Harrie, and some heartbreak for poor Harrie but nothing major. Quinn and Harrie took a 'whole' week to fall in love and yet I didn't mind. Hopefully the next book will be just as entertaining.
