About the author

Josh McDowell is a bestselling Christian apologist, evangelist, and author of over 150 books, including Evidence That Demands a Verdict and More Than a Carpenter. Once an agnostic, he converted to Christianity while investigating its historical claims. He went on to earn degrees from Wheaton College and Talbot Theological Seminary. For decades, McDowell has been a prominent speaker with Campus Crusade for Christ, addressing issues of faith, character, and youth culture worldwide. His work emphasizes historical and legal evidence for Christianity and tackles challenges posed by skepticism and non-Christian beliefs. He lives in California with his wife, Dottie, and is the father of four children, including fellow apologist Sean McDowell.

It is a relevant book. Its style is suitable for all professional categories. Although it is primarily aimed at the American context, it can be adapted to any setting. I appreciate its strong biblical foundation, offering many Bible verses and examples. It is a book written from experience, and that is evident. I highly recommend it—5/5!

تاني كتاب اقراه لچوش ماكدويل بعد "البرهان الجديد". الكتاب نصايح من ماكديل للاباء في كيفية التعامل مع ابناءهم في مراحل العمر المختلفة.

كتقييم عام الكتاب كويس بس ليا شوية ملاحظات:
- چوش حاول يعطي كل نصيحة او تعليم بُعد مسيحي من الكتاب المقدس بغض النظر عن مدى دقة التشبيه.
- چوش اعتمد على خبرته الأبوية وخبرتة في مجال خدمة الشباب في اخراج الكتاب بدون دراسة أكاديمية لنفسية الأبناء. الخبرة العملية مهمة طبعا لكن افتقار المؤلف للدراسة خلى بعض النقاط فيها نوع من السذاجة او اقتصار الرؤية على موافف تعرض ليها المؤلف دون غيرها.
- نقطة اخيرة لا تحسب على المؤلف. هي ان تقريبا كل الامثلة التخوفات اللي بيذكرها المؤلف مش امثلة وتخوفات حقيقية لأب في مجتمع شرقي، ده نتيجة طببعية لاختلاف نمط الحياة الثقافي والاجتماعي.

لكن في العموم الكتاب كويس وان كان يفتقر لمادة علمية لكنه غني بروح مشجعة لكل أب انه يسعى ليكون ذاك الأب الذي يريد ان يكونه

Fatherhood definitions

The book offers many decent and practical advice for the father role in today's world - following the Father in heaven. Be role model, be available, be supportive, be authoritative, be forgiving, and more.

However, the book offers simple recipes for success of fatherhood, without going much depth of the father and child relationship. It makes the fatherhood look like a role with success formula already.

This book walks through several of God's attributes, showing how fathers must emulate Him. It's an excellent concept, but poorly executed. It's not very thought-provoking or motivational, though there are valuable lessons.

The titular "Father Connection" is described in this way:

Be connected to the Father, through prayer and daily devotion and obedience to Him. Then, I can begin to make the Father Connection with my own children, as I show them the Father's image in concrete ways.

McDowell says you must unconditionally love and accept your child because God unconditionally loves and accepts us. He calls God "totally accepting." But God doesn't accept all actions and thoughts; He requires that we repent of sinful actions and thoughts, and have holy actions and thoughts. If He were "totally accepting," why would He send His Son to suffer and die for the sins of His people, and convert sinners to live changed lives?

The Father's Unconditional Love and Acceptance
Make sure your children know that you love them more than your job, hobby, friends, status, etc.

Show your children your love by showing affection and spending time with them.

The Father's Truth
Take every opportunity to teach the value of honesty. Teach that honesty is right because God is true; show the Person behind the precept "don't lie."

"Try to catch your kids doing something right." Offer appreciation and encouragement to reinforce positive behavior.

The Father Who Comforts and Supports
A child who experiences a father's comfort and support will be better able to handle insecurity and unhealthy peer pressure.

When your child is suffering the consequences of their bad choices, offer comfort and support before discipline or correction.

The Father as Refuge
Listen to your child pour out their troubles and tell their whole story, without jumping to conclusions or rushing to judgment.

The Father as Friend
You're always going to have deadlines. But you're not always going to have a young child wanting your time.

Feel free to talk, laugh, and cry about your joys, disappointments, fears, and longings. This helps your children get to know you, and gain insight into how you handle failure, success, disappointment, praise, and criticism.

The Father Who Disciplines

Using the corrective power of logical consequences eliminates the need for lengthy lectures, explanations, arguments, and shouting matches. When both father and child know that certain actions carry certain logical, reasonable consequences, the matter is decided as soon as the action is taken.

It's easier to forgive our children if we think of our own failures.

Este libro lo leí hace ya un tiempo, cuando tenía 19 años creo. Recuerdo que me gustó mucho y que me sorprendió como el autor desarrolla lo que es la paternidad y cómo debe ser para que los hijos crezcan en ambientes saludables. También me hizo ver en donde había fallado mi propio padre, que considero maravilloso, pero que por ciertas actitudes hubo algunos episodios no muy gratos en mi vida que trajeron temores y miedos.
Si eres padre, leelo y ponlo en práctica, el desarrollo entero de una persona depende de ti. Y a todos que somos hijos, leerlo y perdonar a nuestros padres en aquello que identificamos que no estuvo bien, y a partir de ahí, sanar la herida y ahogarla en el mar para poder crecer, a partir de ese momento, sanos de mente, espíritu y cuerpo.

A great book for any follower of Christ that is a father. As an expectant father, I am glad I read it but will have to make a mental note to read it again in a few years as most of it is really about interactions in a relationship. However, I find value in helping set the right set of mind as I enter fatherhood. My only negative on the book was that I could have gone without the numerous plugs for "How to Be a Hero to Your Kids" that he co-authored with Dick Day. (although I will plan on putting it on my to read list)

Me gusto que cada capítulo trae experiencias que otros padres han tenido con sus hijos (para bien y para mal) de las cuales podemos aprender. A book that shows our connection with God and His reflection in our lives.
Very good book not only for fathers but and for mothers, too. Actually it could be used from everybody. There are plenty of things you can take for yourself and can use in your daily life at home (with your children and spouse), at work or in your time with other people.
I recommend the book to all who have children, who have any contact with them or work with them.

This is a great book for christians and nonchristians. Mr. Mcdowell did a great job, he helped me understand my son's connection with his father and how we can become more God like in our relationship, not only with our children but the rest of the family, if we only take the time. (By the way, I am a christian)

Quick and easy read. This book was challenging and deeply encouraging to me, both in my relationship to the Father and my role and responsibility as a father. McDowell outlines each chapter by discussing an attribute of the Heavenly Father and then showing the benefits of having these attributes in our own lives. I was really ministered to.

This book contained many examples and biblical references for becoming the kind of father most of us envy and want to be. The exercises were thought provoking and challenged some of the things I had been doing and forced me to evaluate wether or not I was getting the results I wanted.

I have a read a few christian books on parenting and this book may be my favorite by fair. Josh's advice is helpful and direct in tying it to how God wants us to raise kids but he doesn't beat you over the head unnecessarily with things you are doing wrong. I would recommend this book to any dad.

However, in general I struggle to read Christian books as they are always seem to be talking as if other religions know nothing. Now to read a Christian book translated from English into Afrikaans - not worth it.
