Paddy Griffith was a senior lecturer in war studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for 16 years. He is the author of numerous articles and books on the history of warfare, including Battle Tactics of the Western Front, 1916-18 and The Art of War of Revolutionary France, 1789-1802.
Good and short illustrated overview of weapons, tactics, leadership during the US Civil War. A great place to start further exploring or just enough if you only need a general idea of how they fought.
I find battles tricky to get my head round, so this book with its clear text, 'infographics' and stunning artwork by Peter Dennis is a super way to get to grips with the challenges of American Civil War generalship and tactics. It was a great approach and such a shame there were only ever two books in this series (the other on battle in Africa, 1879-1914). I always find the work of the late, great Paddy Griffith worth reading.
Probably one of the accessible books on the mechanics of fighting in the American Civil War period. Dr. Griffith argues his points clearly and well. In fact, this book should be of interest not only to Civil War buffs, but also to anyone with an interest in black powder battle of any sort as it approaches the realities of conflict with refreshing clarity and humour manfully supported throughout by Peter Dennis's excellent illustrations.
If you want to know how men fought in this period, I can think of no book that covers so much ground in such a small package. Thoroughly recommended.
