This book was actually a fascinating read. Again, I'm not one for self help books because I get confused and then forget what I just read and if I do remember never actually apply it because I'm too lazy. You know?

You know.

But did you know that when you fall in love it's like the same brain chemical reaction as if you were on drugs? Which kind of explains the dating reality shows and you always think, "Shit- are these people on drugs?" Well, kind of.

I really liked reading the book because it really covered all kinds of people. Throughout the book it touches on the different kinds of lovers in relationship and how ADD plays a part in it. AND? I totally diagnosed my husband with Limbic ADD. You can imagine how thrilled he is. But the symptoms of that are: negativity, low energy, low self-esteem, irritability, social isolation, and poor appetite and sleep patterns. For the few of you who might know my husband- you are probably laughing hysterically because this? This is Matt. Like if I had to come up with a list- that would be it. Granted, the low energy and irritability is probably from working at least 10 hour work days, but still. He's Mr. Negative who never wants to do anything that involves people. And if you are asking how we got together- I don't know either. I've also decided he is a Blue Mood Lover. The book provides tips on how I can make him happier. Well, I might do some. But they require work and frankly, I don't think it's my job to make him a happy camper.

But I bet you are all just DYING to know what kind of lover I am. Aren't you??

Perverts

But because you have read this long, I would be the Over Focused Lover. (Stop laughing). The signs of this?

Excessive or senseless worrying
Upset when things don't go your way
Upset when things are out of place
Tendency to be oppositional or argumentative
Tendency to have repetitive negative thoughts
Tendency to compulsive behaviors
Intense dislike for change
Tendency to hold grudges
Trouble shifting attention from task to task
Difficulties seeing options in situations
Tendency to hold onto own opinion and not listen to others
Needing to have things done a certain way otherwise you become upset
My favorite part about this? It specifically tells me to eat carbs. Which is great because that's really the only food group I prefer to eat. Carbs, baby! Matt was in no way interested in reading the tips he is supposed to do to make me happier, so we're even. But can I say how eerie this was? How dead on it was??

Anyhoodle. This book was a really fun read. It was educational for one, but all of the science behind it was explained thoroughly and it's written as if you were speaking to the author. As if you were in for an appointment with the doctor. The tests (there are 5) in the book are quick and it's amazing how an injury to your head, no matter how minor it was, can really affect how your brain operates in general.

I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Earl Henslin, on our radio show "Kingdom Highlights", for his new book, "This Is Your Brain In Love" the sequel to his groundbreaking book, "This Is Your Brain On Joy" published by Thomas Nelson.

For those of you who do not know Dr. Henslin is a licensed marriage and family therapist who has been integrating brain imaging into the treatment of psychological, physical and spiritual problems in his counseling practice. If you have a problem with your brain it will manifest itself in various forms, one of which is the love life. As the book tells us the brain is the biggest sexual organ in the body. Dr. Henslin tells us that the hormones created while we are in first love are equal to someone being on cocaine-without the disastrous side effects. Then when that "high" wears off the couple feel that they have fallen out of love while this is not so. The body simply cannot maintain that euphoria for a long time nor would we want it to.

Dr. Henslin goes into detailed methods to improve the five imbalances common in marriages. With him we learn how to "focus the scattered lover", "relax the over-focused lover", "cheer the blue mood lover", "calm the agitated lover", and "soothe the anxious lover". If you feel you might fall into one of those categories then all is well there is a way these can be corrected and not always with drugs or surgery but with food changes and vitamins.

If you are married, have been married, have problems in your marriage, want to be married then this book if for you. If you have friends that fall into any of those categories then this book is for them and you should give it as a gift, they will thank you for it forever. It is time we learned how we operate and Dr. Henslin give us the right tools to help us. This book is a keeper!

Just in time for Valentine's Day! This is Your Brain in Love: New Scientific Breakthroughs for a More Passionate and Emotionally Healthy Marriage by Dr. Earl Henslin and Foreword by Dr. Daniel G. Amen

Dr. Henslin’s book, This is Your Brain In Love, offers an intriguing look at how you can improve (and even save) your relationship. In his groundbreaking book, Henslin applies the latest research to describe how your love life is affected by your brain. His book offers helpful (and scientific!) advice on how you and your partner can become “master-level lovers.” Topics such as Sexuality and Spirituality, Brain Care, and The Secret to Love are discussed in the book. The book also includes an appendix with useful information on diet, sexual addiction, and hormones.
Henslin breaks the brain into five categories of lovers. The catergories include Scattered Lover, Over-Focused Lover, Blue Mood Lover, Agitated Lover, and Anxious Lover. This is Your Brain in Love devotes a chapter to each type of lover. The five types are described scientifically using pictures and graphs. In addition to this valuable information, there are examples, tips, and tests to take. There are ten tips for each type.

This is Your Brain on Love challenged my views on love, but I am really glad that I was given the opportunity to read this book! One of my goals this year was to build a stronger relationship with my husband and this book has gone a long way to help me meet this goal. The insights provided in Henslin’s book have already begun helping my husband understand me and vice versa. Even with the scientific information, the book was not difficult to read. In fact, I found it a very enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend This Is Your Brain In Love to any couple who wants to become the best lovers they can be!

Dr. Earl Henslin has compiled some very scientific research which will hopefully help the readers of this book improve their love life.

Not only does he explain the anatomy of the brain (along with a few photos showings scans of the brain), he also explains in great detail how the brain functions and how those functions relate to our emotions. I found it interesting that research shows when two people meet and are romantically attracted to each other, their brains release chemicals that are as powerful as street drugs! The book refers to this as a “love drunk” brain. In fact, Dr. Henslin states that a scan of a brain in the beginning stages of romantic passion is very similar to a brain high on cocaine.

Also very powerful to the brain is Oxytocin which the book refers to as the “superglue” of the heart. When the brain releases this chemical, it causes a person to “bond” with another. I REALLY found it interesting that the term “heart broken” isn’t actually that far off physically. According to Dr. Henslin’s research, there are serotonin receptors in the heart which can actually cause a person to feel pain when they lose someone they love. In addition to all of the great scientific data (which is quite fascinating if you’re into details), there are also some tests included in this book which you can take to help you determine what type of lover you are.

In the back of the book there is a section called “The Joy Diet” which gives you some ideas of the types of foods that are best for brain (and heart) health. I especially appreciated the section on “Women and Hormones” which offers some great advice and resources.

Dr. Henslin's first book, This Is Your Brain on Joy, presented a good introduction to the physiology of some common biochemical disorders of the brain and steps to diagnose and treat them. I was expecting this new book to be a helpful exploration of the physiology and biochemistry of love.

However, this book really isn't much about the biochemistry of love at all, but is instead an uneven and disappointing mashup of various topics, some helpful, some confusing. There is a short first chapter which serves as a warm introduction to the concept of romantic love and its biochemistry. Next is a chapter on sexuality and spirituality, which was a nice read but has really no connection to the rest of the book.

Suddenly, he launches into the main part of the book- talking about the five "love styles" which are trumpeted on the book's cover but are really just a thinly retooled rehash of his first book-- describing five basic types of brain pathology. I was frankly confused-- "wait, this is just talking about pathology, this isn't about love at all" "what if my spouse and I don't have any biochemical pathology, do I just skip the next 130 pages?" "where does personality style end and pathology begin?" "Is he implying that most people have deficient biochemistry that needs treating?"

He ends the book with another unrelated chapter titled "The Secret to Lasting Love" (short version: be kind, patient, honest, & forgiving), and then appendixes on brain-healthy eating, sexual addiction, brain scans, and hormone therapy for women.

Overall, the book has some helpful new information, but fell far short of my expectations. Read his first book instead.

I found this book very helpful. I discovered my boyfriend's and my love style pretty easily and am using suggestions for a better and more loving relationship helpful. The book, This Is Your Brain In Love, has latest neuroscience available on the five loving types. Although I focused more on my boyfriend's and my own loving styles yet it was interesting to read about other loving styles. The book, which states in a blurb why we choose certain loving styles over others was not that clearly defined or gone into more detail. So I find the blurb misleading when the focus is mainly on improving your own loving style. I don't need the author Dr Henslin telling me what I already know which is my boyfriend and I have similar loving types which is one more thing we have in common and helpful to better understanding one another. I do appreciate the additional information that Dr Henslin offers for improvement. I found the book intelligently written and user friendly and so does my boyfriend.

In all honesty, it's very hard for me to find a non-fiction self help book that is not so boring that I want to let it sit on the coffee table to never open again. However, Dr. Earl Henslin in my opinion, did a wonderful job at putting this book together. It was the kind of book that you really want to finish reading. I literally grabbed a cup of coffe and stayed up to the wee hours of the night reading it. I liked how he incorporated the Christian faith into it as well. I would rate this book an A++++ and I highly recommend that you read it!
