About the author

Patrick Paul van der Eem is a Dutch Antillean and convicted drug dealer known for his part in the undercover television report about Joran van der Sloot that was produced by Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries. The program set a Dutch television viewing record and renewed attention in the ongoing investigation of the 2005 disappearance of American student Natalee Holloway in Aruba.

De inleiding die Peter R. de Vries schrijft in dit boek zegt heel veel over de inhoud. Het is strikt het verhaal van Patrick van der Eem, die zwelgt in zijn rol van 'informant' voor De Vries. Wat hieraan voorafging, het verdwijnen van Natalee Holloway, mag als bekend verondersteld worden. Daarmee is meteen gezegd dat wie toevallig nog niet weet dat Natalee, een jonge Amerikaanse, op Aruba verdween en dat Joran van der Sloot uiteindelijk overbleef als enige verdachte, dit boek een stuk spannender zal vinden dan degenen die wel alle verhalen in de pers gevolgd hebben.
Het verhaal van Natalee is een voorbeeld van hoe ongelooflijk bepaalde zaken in de media breed uitgemeten kunnen worden. Natalee is (helaas!) niet de enige blonde tiener die spoorloos verdwijnt, en Van de Sloot is niet de enige jongeman die ooit verdacht werd van betrokkenheid. Mocht Van der Sloot op enig moment ooit écht bekennen dat hij de schuldige is, dan zal dat niemand verbazen. Tot die tijd worden zijn escapades in binnen- en buitenland breed uitgemeten.
Patrick van der Eem heeft met héél veel hulp van Peter R. de Vries Joran van der Sloot bepaalde dingen laten zeggen. Die dingen hebben nog steeds niet geleid tot aanhouding, een rechtszaak en een schuldigverklaring. Van der Sloot is dus volgens de wet alleen nog een verdachte... en zelfs dat niet want de zaak is gesloten.
Van der Eem vond het echter nodig om de tv-uitzending, die half Nederland gezien heeft, breed uit te meten in dit boek. E.E. Byars is ongetwijfeld een kundig auteur, omdat de dingen die ze opschrijft over Van der Eem, die hij over zichzelf zegt, direct er voor zorgen dat je haren recht overeind gaan staan.
Van der Eem is om het zachtjes te zeggen bijzonder blij met zichzelf en zeer vooringenomen. Die sfeer tekent het hele boek. De rest van het boek wordt gevuld met transcripties van de beroemde tv-uitzending van Peter R. de Vries waarin Van der Eem en Van der Sloot samen high in de auto zitten en vage conversaties hebben.
Dit boek is in Amerika uitgekomen en dus in vertaling in Nederland uitgebracht. Van mij had het niet gehoeven.

I read the English version of this book, which I can't locate on Goodreads. Anyhow, I was incredibly frustrated by conversations taken out of order and jumbled around throughout the book. I was hard to follow and the repetition was incredibly annoying. I can't recommend this book to anyone.

Very good book with backgrounds... however one should have knowledge of the tapes...better watch those on youtube before reading this book.
Certainly worth the read.

The case of Natalee Holloway interests me. No-one has been convicted but many people believe the role Joram van der Sloot plays is that of the murderer. This book gives a lot of more insights in the case, and you get Patrick van der Eems personal beliefs about the case and the infamous car interviews (which can be found on youtube). The book has been well written and allows it to be read easily. My problem with it is the main character (and author) Patrick himself. He tends to brag a lot about his toughness and criminal past, about going straight, about the family man he now beliefs he is. I found it disturbing. Only months after the book was released Dutch papers reported he and his wife breaking up. Also the book doesn't have that much to offer except for the story; I'm not sure it allows for 320 pages. The most important reason to read it for most people will be them already following the whole affair.
