This text is in SERIOUS need of an update. The original was published in 1989, and quite frankly, even though I had the 2011 edition, I felt like I was reading something that had been compiled in the Seventies or the Eighties. While the data presented goes all the way up to 2009, the layout, language and images don't appear to have been modernized. The author talks about VHS and DVDs, but doesn't mention BluRay, even though they came out in 2002. He uses hokey terminology (like the word "hokey") and made references to historical characters that traditionally aged college students likely wouldn't recognize (like Oliver North).
What makes all of this so galling is that the book is on VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS. Like how do your write a book about that subject and not account for the rapid technological growth the communications sector is experiencing?
And finally, the author did all of his own illustrations. That was a mistake.
This is a very entertaining book that portrays Leprechauns more as devilish tricksters than as adorable fairies. The narrative is a bit long, and is appropriate for older elementary school-age children. The illustrations are wonderful and complement the story nicely. We really enjoyed reading this book together, and I was thrilled that we were able to find this book at our local library so close to St. Patrick's Day.
