But Mme Eugenie de Selincourt turns out to be a remarkably fit old lady, and Lynn discovers that she has nothing to do but join in the life of the idle rich. Why, then, is a trained nurse required? This Ace first gothic - circa 1967, fluctuates between creating boredom and unintentional giggles. It's saved only from being a total waste of time by it’s interesting set-piece : the gorgeous but crumbling chateau made entirely out of pink marble.

The plot is familiar - orphaned nurse Lynn Calder takes a job offer caring for a sick old woman in the Pyrenees but when she gets to the mansion finds that the woman is anything but ill. What gives? Rather than leave she stays, torn between being romanced by the woman’s charming French grandson and the marital problems of his flaky sister Zelie and her surly husband Grant. There is of course their neglected child - which tips off the reader where this is headed.

The old woman is pressing for her to accept a marriage proposal from the hot-blooded Marcel days after they met. Meanwhile she's overcome by the revelation, after she saves Grant’s child from an electric shock ( due to a faulty razor?! ), that she loves Grant! Considering he’s barely acknowledged her existence the scene is lol. There’s the old look-out-for-the-boulder-rumbling-towards-you scene but not much else going on.

And the writing itself is dry and dated ( even for ‘67.)Buckingham must use the adjective gay or gaily at least fifty times. Check out only if you're a fan of Gothic's it is after all a breezy read.
