It´s an interesting manga. It´s just a little bit hard to follow because it has a lot of references about Japan History that it´s not commun for a spanish person, but i enjoyed the book.

kkyu es un manga en 4 volúmenes delicioso. 😊😊😊

First volume is funny and interesting. I thought I have heard about him before in my University lectures, but doesn't seem to be the case. I've certainly missed out.

"Ikkyu" was a manga I loved as a university student. It was funny, it made me think, it had some historical aspects about Japan that were quite interesting, it tried to be realistic, I liked the drawing style and the way Sakaguchi told the story...

Many years later I am re-reading it, and... what can I say? I still believe Sakaguchi does a great job, at least in this first volume. It is amazing how he introduces the characters, creates a realistic and vibrant work, and doesn't simplify Ikkyu to a caricature, but creates a character with lots of facets and interesting doubts.

The story goes around Ikkyu, a real figure of Japanese history, a, quite particular, Zen Buddhist monk who had a penchant for alcohol and women. This first volume introduces us to child Ikkyu (back then with different names), who has to enter a monastery because of his family background (him being the child of the emperor). There he tries to learn what means all those things about emptiness, nirvana, Buddha and etc, while showing a sharp mind and quite the talent for poetry. Sakaguchi does a great job with the introduction of characters and plot development (even if some history can feel a little bit heavy) and particularly in how the manga is an expression of Ikkyu himself, with his doubts, his difficulty to differ what is earthly, and what he is supposed to discover and be enlighten by. It is all really interesting and makes the reader think and food for thought is always good.

The drawing style, realistic, but not simple, is also great and helps bring the reader to the world of Ikkyu. It is all dirty, gritty and fits perfectly with the story.

A great start to Ikkyu's story.

7.5/10

I liked this series of four books -- not only do you learn much about Zen (though not necessarily accurate facts about the historical Ikkyu) but also quite a lot about the development of Noh theatre -- and quite a lot more than you would care to know :-P about 15th century civil wars ...

Good artwork with lots of details and good use of graphical metaphors/leitmotifs (like the web of karma) -- only the civil wars take too much room for my taste, but I really appreciate all the other parallel histories (of Noh, especially, of poetry, and the temple politics).

All in all, the books are funny, clever, deep and shallow, spiritual and profane (erotic, even) -- you may not get enlightened but you will enjoy yourself and I guess (the book's) Ikkyu would approve of that ^^

Ikkyu is a tremendously beautiful manga in 4 tomes that follows the life of a bhouddist monk in Japan in an era full of wars between shoguns, samourais and emperors... The search of Ikkyu for the meaning of life and the thoughts he goes through are deep... although his character makes the reader feeling happy... for me this is really beautiful!

It is very well done, good artwork and story but it didn't enrich my life. Just decent, would not have finished it if it wasn't a Manga that you can read on one or two commutes.
