Lynda Rees offered me the chance to read her soon to be released book, Operation Second Chance in exchange for a fair and honest review. I had not read any of her work before but I will be reading more now. Zoe and Gabe had been best friends since third grade. Gabe was hoping for a more permanent relationship after graduation but Zoe didn't feel that way so he joined the Special Forces and traveled the world while Zoe stayed in Sweetwater Kentucky and married and had a son. When Zoe's husband is killed, she and her son are accused of the murder. Gabe knows it is not possible and tells Zoe so when he returns to sell his Mother's home. If Zoe didn't kill her husband, who did? Seems like most of the town had reason. Now that Zoe was a widow could Gabe rekindle their relationship from their younger days? As you read this book, all your questions will be answered. Take a trip to Kentucky and meet some new friends and find a killer.
I was not crazy about the characters in this story. It seemed choppy to me. Zoe is married to a horrible man and only stays with him because of their son. As time goes by, she finally has enough and kicks him out of the house. That night he is murdered. Zoe and her son are suspects. Zoe has only trusted her father and a boy she knew in high school. She was cruel to him the last time she saw him so he would go and get on with his life. He did that and has come back to town to attend his mother's funeral. They reconnect, but at that point she is still married. Gabe really wants to be with her. There is no other woman who can hold his interest. They give a long distance relationship a try, but it isn't what either of them want. Can Gabe convince her to move to Texas with him? He doesn't want to live without her. She has always lived in one town and has all of her friends there. Is she brave enough to move away?
2nd chances are my favorite trope and this one had my heart bleeding with the distrust that was developed during her 1st marriage...anger, hurt, murder and mayhem all follow the death of her husband. Can Zoe trust that Gabe (her first love) will not break her heart and can Gabe get to her in time to save her? ❤❤❤ I volunteered an honest opinion for this book.
Lynda Rees has written a compelling romantic suspense that pulls you in from the very first page. The story follows Zoe Waters, a farm girl who never quite fit in, and her brainy best friend Dex Strong, who was destined for greatness. Years after she forced a painful breakup to keep him from ruining his future, Dex returns as a confident Navy SEAL just as Zoe and her teenage son are suspected of murdering her husband. The sparks between them are undeniable, but the reconciliation puts Zoe directly in a killer's crosshairs .
What I loved most is how Rees balances a heartfelt second chance romance with genuine suspense. The mystery of who killed Zoe's husband keeps you guessing, as it seems half the town had a reason to want him dead . The author's attention to setting, painting a vivid picture of small town Kentucky, adds richness to the story, and the chemistry between the characters is palpable . The author is an award winning storyteller, and it shows in her ability to craft a fast paced, engaging read that is hard to put down .
This book is perfect for fans of romantic suspense who love military heroes and resilient heroines. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
I was lucky enough to have won a paperback copy of the book in one of Lynda Rees' giveaways and I just love the book it was well written, had action and the storyline was fun and not to mention that I loved the characters too and very well written and done **This is my own opinion and only received a paperback book in exchange for my honest review** Will read this book 📘 again and highly recommend
Zoe Stone is married to a cheating husband, Kyle, and stays with him for the sake of their young son Ray.
Gabe Connor is career Army Special Forces. He has been in love with Zoe since grade school when he was a nerdy little weakling.
They reconnect when his mother passes and he comes home for several weeks. Meanwhile she gets publicly humiliated by her husband and kicks him out. Next day the sheriff delivers the news he was murdered. She is a prime suspect though Kyle was hated by many of the locals. It takes two years and a kidnapping to catch the real killer and meanwhile Zoe falls in love with Gabe.
There Susan Rees goes again writing a novel that keeps you turning the pages! Mystery & Suspense tied in a knot for this small town gal Zoe. Falling in love isn't easy - especially if your husband is cheating on you - should Zoe throw her husband out. Find out the consequences of a real life situation that happens too often. Is Zoe the killer or is somebody after her? Twists and turns, and a real who-done it that keeps you wanting to flip the pages. Great job Susan Rees! I highly recommend this book.
Lynda Rees wrote an interesting tale. In this story, Zoe Waters and Dex Strong had been friends since childhood. Dex joined the Navy and Zoe moved on with her life. Circumstances bring them back together. My only dislike of the story was that I thought that Zoe's angst over her choices went on a little too long. On the whole, I enjoyed the tale and recommend it to others. Miranda Cameron's narration was great and her voice was pleasing. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.
This was a good read despite Zoe making frustrating decisions. The plot with romance and suspense was good though it fell flat at times. I think the author made this story longer than it should have been.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book.
