Forever Only Once is the start to Carrie Ann Ryan's new series, Promise Me, though the hero may be familiar to you if you've read Wrapped in Ink. Cross Brady is the oldest of his siblings and has always felt like he needed to be their protector, but that kept his social life lacking when he was too busy worrying about his siblings to date. Hazel Noble is trying to move on from the horrors in her past but isn't sure she should put her trust in the gruff yet incredibly sexy man she met by complete accident. Their chemistry is off the charts though and neither can deny how much they like each other.

This book had it all, the romance, the suspense, the close family connections, and the hot bearded man. Everything I could ask for and why I love this author so much. She's one of my favorite authors when I'm looking for those characters that are close to their family or friends and the Brady family is my newest obsession. I can't wait to see what else will come from this family but I know it's going to be something amazing.

This is my second Carrie Ann Ryan book and although I wasn’t thrilled with the first book I read, this one did not disappoint. I do have to say that her books are sometimes a bit wordy and maybe a tad bit repetitive BUT still good books.

There were great connection of both family and friends along with romance, humor and serious suspense and action.

Cross Brady is the oldest sibling in the Brady family and seems to be known for his protectiveness. There are 3 other brothers and 1 sister. I was so intrigued with Cross’s sister that I need to know her story which is apparently from a different series called “Montgomery Ink; Boulder” and it is the first book in the series called WRAPPED IN INK.

Hazel Noble has great friends thank goodness since she lost her parents years ago and escaped a marriage that went horribly wrong. She is extremely paranoid (for good reason) and does not trust people easily.

By chance she meets Cross and although they both don’t really do well at new relationships of any kind they decide their interest in one another is worth exploring.

This was a slow burn with suspense and ended up with some crazy action and parts that really pull at your heart strings.

Forever Only Once is a powerful story of friendship, strength, recovery, hope, and love. And I loved every minute spent with Hazel and her amazing group of friends. Four women who’ve overcome so much and are ready—at least to try—to find love again.

Hazel is the first victim, er... winner in the pact to start looking for love again. And lucky for her, and a blind date gone wrong, she finds herself enjoying the company of Cross Brady.

Hazel never thought she’d feel this way again about a man and a relationship. She’s fallen for the wrong man before—one who took advantage of her youth and her parents—and she’s vowed to never make that mistake again! But she can’t deny the connection with Cash, no matter how much they both fight it.

Once they give in, their friendship and relationship, while scary, is easy. And lovely. And smart. And sexy. And wonderful. And just what Cash and Hazel need in their lives.

Especially when they need to rely on their connection, their love when the past catches up with them. A past that could prove deadly for them both.

I loved Hazel and Cash’s relationship. How easily she blended into his family, and he blended in with her friends. I can’t wait until the rest of the secrets are revealed through the series. I have a feeling, this Promise Me series will become one of my top favs. ~ Missy, 5 stars

"It was just a smile. Even the devil had a pretty face."
Ohhh, how we've all been in this place before! Hazel Noble is definitely there, and deliciously so, fighting her attraction to Cross Brady, with whom she's come face-to-face with one of the coolest meet-cutes I've ever read in a romance.
But this book, just like every Carrie Ann Ryan novel, is about more than the let's-smile-la-la-happy moments. It's about richly drawn characters in a world where one wants to be one of the heroines and go to bed with ALL the heroes; a smartly-erected construct of a brand-new world that ties back enough to previous books that you feel both comfortable and excited at the same time.
The instant sparks between Hazel and Cross develop into a slow burn romance that was really awesome medicine for my soul. The feels were all there, especially once the characters' backstories were revealed, but the darker elements never underscored the gorgeously written hope of a budding and destined love.
The only thing I'm kicking myself for now is not starting this series sooner! I'm super excited to dive into the rest.

Her Strength!!!

Hazel Noble, a math professor who worked at University of Boulder and who'd survived some horrible things that she would never wished upon anyone not even her enemies. But she healed, moved on, meet some incredible and strong women that she was proud to call her friends. She loved them like sisters. They all made a pact to start looking for love, she was the first one up. Well things should be interesting ;).

Cross Brady, one of Arden's ( WRAPPED IN INK ) brothers and co-owner of Chris Cross Furniture wasn't looking for any kind of relationship. As the oldest of five children, his family could always rely in him, no matter what. He just wanted to live his life peacefully. He never expected for things to change until, he accidentally met a beautiful funny and smart woman by the name of Hazel.

They both felt the connection between them but was working really hard to fight what was happening. If that wasn't bad enough, just as she was ready to say and hear those three magical words from Cross. She came face-to-face with a past she thought she'd left behind her.

Cross wasn't about to let anyone take his girl away from him, now that he'd finally found her. She fought tooth and nails as well to make sure that the evildoers regretted ever putting their hands on her.

It was great to see Arden giving Cross advice, love the bond between all the siblings. What a treat it was to catch up with some old characters and get some mentions of many of the others.

Loved how Cross gave Hazel the space she needed but he wasn't giving up on them without a fight. They got their HEA! 🥰🥰🥰

FOREVER ONLY ONCE is the first installment in Carrie Ann Ryan's newest series, PROMISE ME. It was fun, heartwarming, passionate, fascinating and a must read. Carrie Ann Ryan did a magnificent job. Two thumbs up!

P. S. Can't wait for what comes next! ;)

I loved how Cross and Hazel met, a chance meeting that they both decided to take advantage of. Them taking things slow was a good thing too, it allowed each to really think if they wanted to spend time with the other. Of course Hazel had her own reasons for going slow, which broke my heart. I liked that Cross realized that Hazel was skittish and always asked before doing anything, from kissing her, to asking to come inside her house. Things were really going good for the two of them, so you when they went to shit it wasn't surprising. About the only surprising thing was the people involved who messed things up. Things ended well for Cross and Hazel, they are living their HEA, but it will be fun to see Hazel's friends pair off with Cross's brothers.

Cross Brady being the eldest of his siblings and trying to protect and look after them, as well as being the co-owner of Chris Cross Furniture, doesn't give him much time for a social life. And he was happy with his life, well until he accidentally meet beautiful, funny women named Hazel Noble.
Hazel Noble is a math professor who works at University of Boulder and she has not had a happy life. But she is healing and moving on, when she joined a group of women getting their life on track. Now they have all made a pact to find love and guess who is first up😊 ?

When Cross and Hazel met you could feel the chemistry and the attraction. And maybe this was her start of a new life of being happy with someone. But things doesn't always go the way you want it to. And just when she is ready for that next step, her past comes back. A past she had hoped would stay where it was... In the past. Will Cross be able to hold onto his women and the new life they are trying to create or will the past just be too much too handle ☹

Loved this authors new releases. And this one I really enjoyed. Love a story that has some dark pasts and everything isn't that easy. When two people fight tooth and nail for what they deserve, that makes for an awesome story❤ 😊 Definitely a story that I can see myself reading again

It was okay. Would I dive back in to the next book in the series? Not sure to be honest.

I just couldn’t find any connection between any of the characters. They didn’t gel for me.

The chemistry or that feeling you get reading was absent.

Meh, 2.5

Not awful, not anything great. I’ve read some of Carrie Ann Ryan before and I think I just struggle to connect with her characters. These two were very wishy washy.

I don’t go into these fluff books with super high expectations, but I want to feel *something* for the characters. I want to get invested in the romance. This one fell a little flat.

Hazel and her best friends are making a pact to get back into dating and find the one. Each of them will take her turn, with the others picking the perfect date. Through luck of the draw, Hazel is up first. She has picked up her life and recovered from a controlling, negative situation. Her first date is set with a friend of a friend, a man her friends think will be perfect for her, but at the last minute he cancels leaving her already waiting at the bar alone.

Cross thought he had everything he wanted, with his focus entirely on his business he runs with his best friend. But lately, he’s been noticing some odd things with his friend and he begins to question if their business is everything they had planned it to be. His suspicions are raised when his partner sends him to meet a client in the evening at a bar, rather than a more traditional business setting.

Both Hazel and Cross are at the bar expecting to meet someone, but through a case of initial mistaken identity (and that last minute cancelation), they end up spending the evening together. Things just click as they continue their conversation, but Hazel is still tentative.

The progression between these two was so much fun to watch. Hazel is hesitant. Though she has put herself back together, there is a part of her that is afraid history will repeat if she isn’t careful. As Cross learns more about Hazel, he learns that he will have to tread carefully, but that the patience is worth it. The chemistry between these two is fantastic. I loved the banter and development as they met each other’s friends or family (because those are not smooth transitions in all cases).

There are also a few darker threads rolling in the background as Cross tries to figure out what is going on with his business partner. And on top of that mess, the past Hazel thought was in her past is back, and she’s already put herself back together once, she doesn’t know if she can do it again.

I’ve read parts of the Montgomery series, but haven’t read the Boulder part of the family yet. Even so, the way this series is set up, each book stands alone. I loved getting to meet the women that make up Hazel’s circle and can’t wait for each of their stories to come to light!

This book had potential but it felt like my guesses at any twists that were coming were better than what actually happened.
I'm honestly racking my brains for any personality traits that either of the main characters have and nothing comes to mind. I wasn't a massive fan of either of them, even though their romance was sweet.
So let's get to my expectations. The blurb mentions that they were fighting their connection to each other, I wouldn't really say that was true. Hazel had a few nervous moments were she thought her common sense over men was ruined because of her abusive ex-husband, but it was fixed within a page or two.
Hazel receives a few threatening messages that appear to be from her ex-husband as he recently got out of prison and it culminates with a showdown at the end of the book with Hazel and Cross vs. Hazel's ex-husband.
So what actually happens is that the ex is harassing her and offers money to Cross' shitty business partner to get his revenge. The ex shoots Cross' brother, kidnaps Hazel and kills the business partner. Good guys win after both Hazel and Cross are shot.
My idea was a bit different. So at the start of the book, Hazel is sexually harassed and assaulted by a random guy on the street. I assumed that their was more importance to this interaction and thought that maybe it was the business partner. Then I thought it'd be a bigger twist is the business partner became obsessive and it was actually him texting while her ex husband was following his parole. Equally dramatic, but I thought that it was a bit too linear to have the texts be from the ex-husband when he seems like an obvious choice.
An annoying thing about the suspense in the story is that she received two texts and then the finale happened. That isn't suspense, yes she was scared but I'd hoped for more than just two texts.

Would I recommend the book? Nah, I don't think I would.
Will I be carrying on the series? After reading the blurbs, I just wasn't invested in any of the stories or characters.

Someone who knows me will know that I am a fan of Carrie Ann Ryan. Most of her books we hits for me and she's one of the few authors who don't disappoint (usually). Unfortunately, I ended up not liking this book as much as her other works. The tone of this series feels completely different from what I have read before and it didn't click for me.

One of the most frustrating things was teasing for the other books in the series. I got the impression that Hazel's friends will be paired up with Cross's brothers which is not a bad thing, but I don't like to be teased for a story that's going to be released in a year or more. Something happened between Myra (I think I got her name right), Hazel's best friend, and Nate, one of Cross's brothers and while we were told about the strange way they were acting in the other's presence we didn't even get a hint about what went on between them. I am guessing theirs will be a second chance romance.

But that wasn't what truly bothered me. No, that was Hazel's hesitation to open up. Her behavior was to be expected considering what she went through, but I wasn't expecting her to be closed off for almost all the books. She was always holding back and I thought that she should have seen a therapist, especially after what went down in this story.

Which brings me to the next thing I want to talk about. The villain of the story seemed a little forced upon us and merely used as a plot device. There was a particular twist that I would have liked to have explained more and it has to do with Chris.

Overall though, I didn't find this book bad. I had no problem finishing it and I wanted to see where Hazel and Cross were heading. There were some bad and some good stuff and in the end, I would recommend the book.

She has some demons in her past that makes her put a social life outside of her group of friends. Cross and Hazel have the cutest meet cute that gets them curious of what life would be like if they made time for the other. Cross is working through what to do about his current business arrangement so he is okay with taking things slow. I loved the attraction and chemistry between the couple. I really enjoyed how Hazel worked towards healing and dealing with her past. I loved how loyal Cross is. I don’t usually like suspense in a romance but the story gave the perfect amount of suspense and fit perfectly in the story. I loved the secondary characters and am excited for the other books in the series. Carrie Ann hits this new series out of the ballpark and into the next state!!

I couldn't stop listening and or reading this book until I finished it. The entire premise of the series intrigued me, and I cannot wait to see how the rest of the series goes.

It is so nice to see some old favorites too, like Liam and Arden. I love those two.

Back to the couple. Cross and that beard. I'm a sucker for a beard and add in a growly man and I'm all over it. Jason Clarke is perfect for the narrating the Brady men. He gives each one a distinct voice, you can really tell which brother is talking. Big points. I can say same for Emma Wilder. She nails giving each of Hazel's friends their own voice that really comes through.

I love Hazel, her kindness, strength really stuck with me. Her friends are a total hoot and I cannot wait to see them find their HEAs.

The suspense element of it all was really good, it kept me guessing. How would it all end. Can't wait for more!

Forever Only Once is Book 1 in the new Promise Me series by Carrie Ann Ryan. I love how the author spins off her famous Montgomery Ink series with lots of intertwined characters but yet all of her stories stand perfectly fine of their own. This story was filled with everything a person could ask for including drama, suspense, angst, romance, and lots of heat. Hazel and Cross were amazing characters and I enjoyed the twists and turns the author threw at us. Another amazing story by Carrie Ann Ryan!

Forever😍

Hazel and Cross meet by accident❣️ What starts out as an accident soon turns into something more but both have a lot going on in their lives - Cross is dealing with something at work and Hazel has some secrets in her past which might just come to bite her in the rear😢

A great story, some funny moments and some filled with suspense but overall a wonderful start to this new series and I’m kicking myself I didn’t start reading it earlier😱

2.5⭐️

The relationship between the two mcs felt super forced and not genuine at all. Their texts and conversations were so dry, reading about them was basically like watching paint dry.

Then at the end lol completely ridiculous how she handled things and again proving their relationship had no actual feelings in it or that would not have gone down the way it did.

Didn't feel any connection between Hazel and Cross. Too much inner monologue saying the same thing over and over. Was hard to finish the book.

5 Their Love Was A Surprise Stars!!!

There’s nothing better than the first book in a new series where I not only get to meet new characters but get to see some of my favorites from previous series and that’s exactly what Ms. Ryan has given us in this first book of her Promise Me series.

We get a great introduction to all the characters that this series will be about and we get a fantastic second chance story that’s full of suspense, angst, friendship, a dirty talker and feelings that are very powerful. This first book centers on Hazel and Cross and how they get a chance at love that neither was looking for or wanting for that matter.

I loved how this story draws us in with the hint of something that’s happened in Hazel’s past causing her to be reluctant to date let alone find love and with Cross, he’s been so focused on building his business so imagine his surprise when he goes to a business meeting and meets Hazel and so begins their journey.

This book moves at a quick pace which I loved. I found myself on the edge of my seat as these two get closer and closer and acting on their feelings and desires which allows Hazel to feel a little free for the first time in a long time. I loved how Cross showed how he felt about Hazel, even taking him by surprise, I think. There’s also an element of suspense built into this story that shocked me because while I had an idea of what was going on, yeah, I didn’t see that extra twist!

All in all, this book is a perfect reason why I love Ms. Ryan’s writing and her books. The characters are strong and captivating. The storyline is sell developed and had me engaged on every page. I cannot wait to see what happens with book two!!

So I didn’t not like this but I think it didn’t quite deliver what I’d hoped. All the right elements were there on the emotional end, even with the dramatic plot aspects, but the middle felt so wishy washy.

A strong start, with the dating pact and Cross thinking something’s not right with the business. Then he and Hazel meet, yay! But I wanted more of them getting to know each other. Conversations, quiet moments, generally spending time together. We were TOLD a lot rather than shown, and that’s disappointing. Why are they always apart? I get they both work but this is a romance novel for goodness sake! I don’t want them texting all the time, I want nighttime whispers and what they talk about on dates!!! I didn’t even care that there’s only one smut scene - it was well done and I don’t need all romances to be super explicit. It just felt awkward because we hear all this about Hazel being nervous and afraid and traumatized by her ex (super fair!!!) but then suddenly she’s calling it a relationship with Cross, then she’s saying hm maybe not maybe I can’t, then she loves him. It was pingponging back and forth without much development of feelings for the reader to see.

Also, lots of elements are repeated over and over and that got annoying. Cross is protective of his sister, she’s married and he has to trust her husband, he LIKES the husband but he wants to protect his sister but she’s married. Hazel doesn’t feel safe but can trust Cross but these texts are weird so she must not be safe but Cross seems okay but can he deal with her feeling unsafe? Dakota has secrets but she’s nice and has a kid who’s also great but Dakota’s secrets are mysterious but she’s a cool lady but her secrets are hers to tell. YOU SEE?

This book was so freaking good! I picked this one up because I started an ARC of the second book and I really wanted to find out Hazel and Cross's story first and the story was really good. Hazel was running from her ex-husband who was just an evil person and made a new life for herself while he was in jail. But he is out now and she is trying not to let that control her because she wants to see where a relationship with Cross can come in. Cross needs to get out of his business with his former best friend and because of his mess up Cross met Hazel and one thing lead to another and they started dating. Though awkwardly. They were so cute together and the drama was nail biting. I highly recommend this book!

I grabbed this book on a whim. I was pleasantly surprised these characters lived a universe from another series I had fun reading. Cross was yummy. I have to admit at times Hazel was an enjoyable female protagonist. Overall it was a pleasant read and I love the guys and lots of the women in this world.
