Sweet Southern Comfort

Barely a year in a new place, Chief of Police Jackson LeDeux has little expectation when it comes to matters of the heart. Especially after going through a bad break-up. On an open investigation about a serial rapist, Jackson goes undercover as he barhops the nearby gayclubs for any sign of the culprit. But what he finds first becomes a distraction to both his job and his personal Liam McCoy. Liam just lost his mother to cancer. After the funeral, his cousin, Claire re-invents him into a new man. A man who is now open to start his life for himself. Going into clubs to find love, he never expected it to come closer to home. Things turn for the worst when Jackson’s personal life mixes in with his job now that he is on the suspect’s hit list... Sample 1: Frustrated because I really wanted to make love to him, but chagrined because he was right, I dove for Jackson's lips, kissing him deeply before moving down his body, keeping him breathless until I could take him in my mouth again, move over him, flick him with my tongue until he cried out my name. When Jackson came against my tongue, his cock lurching and surging with release, I left his body, going soft against his hip as I kissed him deep, then deeper still. "Still think I'm too sore for sex?" Jackson had his hand against his forehead, breathing hard. "No." He gasped. "You can drive me wild..." He gulped. "With little warning." Sample 2: Things started getting cloudy in my mind be-cause all I wanted was to kiss him, take off his clothes, and fuck him senseless. He was good, I'll give him that, but I'd been no slouch either. I'd fucked that asshole in Washington until he whimpered. I wanted to do the same to Jackson. Without thinking, I undid my seatbelt and slid over to take Jackson's lips with my own. I pulled his head towards me and felt the car swerve. Jackson pulled us off the highway onto the shoulder and I got out of the car as Jackson did. He came around, anger flashing in his eyes. "What the hell were you doing?" I walked up to him, rolling my hips, grabbing his shirt and ripping it open. I latched onto his nipple with my teeth and started feeling his ass. "I wanted you. Now." Jackson gasped and I could feel his legs tremble as I turned him so his back rested against his truck. "Liam, what are you doing?"

D.W. Simon

D.W. Simon finally got his stuff together and came out of the closet at 28. The only problem is, he'd spent so much time in there, he never learned to date, socialize, have self-confidence, etc. Somehow he thought that by just admitting, even to himself that he was gay, that he would automatically get the husband, the house, the 2.5 kids, and all the rest. Sadly, that didn't happen.

So... in making sure that he stayed sane, D. W. began writing. Not only writing to put on paper what he wanted, thought was sexy, and was hoping to find, but actually seeing what was out there. It started as a grand experiment, to get feedback, just to find out if any of his desires could come true. The next thing you know, he had completed 25 short stories, had a huge fan base, and considered actually making this his full-fledged career.
Now, many years later, D. W. has the husband, the house, no kids but five cats, and is working on his own happily ever after. All of his works are fiction, none of them actually happened. D. W. has always been amazed at how many of his fans wonder if his writing is auto-biographical in nature. The answer is no, it isn't.

Not a review. Just thoughts. The blurb tells what the book is about.

There are a few things that bugged me about this story.

- Told in alternating points of view by the following characters: Liam and Jackson (the two main characters), Villain (that's the way he's listed), Erik (a new deputy of Jackson's), Claire (Liam's overbearing cousin) and Sam (Jackson's so-called friend and one time fuck buddy. Sam is also very married when he is Jackson's "fuck buddy"). Normally I like this style of writing but in this case, I was given whiplash. Throw in the fact that each time a POV changed in the book, the next character would rehash pretty much everything that had just occurred in the previous character's mind. That got frustrating pretty quick.

- Bad editing. This was a freebie for me from Amazon so I really shouldn't complain. Had I paid for this, I would have demanded a refund.

- Eric and Claire - Major insta-love. Not just insta-love but instant commitment. I found Erik to be a decent and sweet character but this, on top of his virginal and "waiting for sex until I get married" status, was extremely unrealistic.

- The villain, as he is described in the book. He has been drugging men at a particular gay bar and taking them away and raping and sometimes killing them. Not only was this person not any type of character of interest before the big reveal, he came out of left field.

- Jackson. One, I disliked his attitude toward Liam immediately. Two, something traumatic happens to Jackson later in the book (right after something bad happens to Liam). When I say traumatic, I mean really traumatic and it involved the "villain". Later, he goes on to have 3 days of sex with Liam and all is forgotten about his own personal attack. I found that to be offensive. He was handcuffed to his bed, had a cock shoved down his throat and forced to blow this guy until he came down his throat and then later the man had tried to rape Jackson anally (without a condom I might add and after the man had said he was HIV positive) and after a couple of unsuccessful thrusts, Erik bursts in to save Jackson. The bad guy had tried to rape Jackson at gunpoint. Had even shoved himself part of the way into him. I'm guessing that that experience (on top of the forced blowjob) would have been so traumatic to Jackson that he would not be willingly letting Liam fuck him anally so soon after. Add this to the fact that Jackson had only had one experience as a bottom and it ended badly where he ended up bleeding for three days afterward. This is a big deal in the story... the fact that Jackson refused to bottom because of his previous bad experience. Then he's almost raped and it's okay for Liam to do it only a matter of days later?

- The writing is dated. Smooch is an example.

- Liam. While I liked him okay for the most part I found him to be a little too accepting of Jackson's attitude. Also, he allowed his extremely annoying and overbearing cousin to pretty much control his life.

- Claire. Just no. She went beyond annoying and I cringed every time her name came up in the book.

- This is dubbed as Gay Romance Erotica. This book is far from being erotica. Yes, there are sex scenes with Liam and Jackson but if this is erotica then I must normally be reading some pretty hardcore stuff. The sex is basic in this book and most of it is not really that detailed.

- Sam. What a complete jerk. I have no words for this guy. Add something with Sam and Jackson from the past and this adds also to my lack of love for Jackson.

Overall, the story was okay. I wouldn't call it a complete waste of my time but what I mentioned above didn't work for me. I'm really glad it was a freebie.

Liam and Jackson are two men who knock into each other and it causes quite a loop and it is a very interesting ride for these two men who weren't really looking for each by can't walk away now that they have.

Terrific

I am really glad I clicked this book. It's a great read. I enjoyed Liam and Jackson and their budding relationship a lot. Loved the secondary story of Claire and Erik. The added suspense and drama was a nice bonus. I didn't want the story to end. Will check out more from this author for sure.
